River Inn of Harbor Town

Beautiful Harbor Town, but the Hotel Did Not Match Our Expectations My husband and I stayed at the River Inn of Harbor Town for five nights in September 2026. I chose the hotel largely because of its glowing reviews and reputation as an upscale boutique property. Unfortunately, our experience did not match those expectations. Harbor Town itself is beautiful, peaceful, and one of the highlights of our Memphis visit. I especially enjoyed running along the Mississippi River in the mornings. We also enjoyed the hotel’s restaurants, particularly Tug’s, where the food was consistently delicious and we encountered a kind and welcoming bartender. Paulette’s was good as well, and we enjoyed the rooftop terrace. The hotel experience, however, was disappointing. We were initially assigned room 301, which overlooked the parking area despite my request for a river view. More importantly, the room had an overwhelming old/mildew-like odor. I contacted the front desk, and a staff member eventually came upstairs, acknowledged the smell, and moved us to junior suite 325 in the building across the street. I appreciated that response, and the suite was larger with the beautiful river view we had hoped for. Unfortunately, room 325 had numerous housekeeping and maintenance concerns, including dirty or scuffed baseboards and floor edges, debris, chipped and peeling paint, damaged surfaces, and other conditions that did not reflect the level of upkeep I would expect from an upscale boutique property. I documented several of these issues with photographs. We also experienced service inconsistencies. The Keurig displayed a message indicating that it needed to be descaled. After I called the front desk, it was replaced with a smaller basic machine, but the coffee mugs, pods, creamer, and sugar were not replenished. The hotel advertises nightly turndown service. During our stay, this consisted primarily of delivering port wine and chocolates rather than actually turning down the room. One evening, even that delivery was missed. I called the front desk, reached voicemail, left a message, and did not receive a return call. The most serious concern occurred when the fire alarm sounded. My husband and I immediately evacuated using the side stairwell, but the door at the bottom would not open. My husband ultimately had to kick it to get us out. We walked around to the front and were told that everything was okay and that guests could return inside while they waited for the fire department to reset the alarm. Whatever caused the alarm, having difficulty opening an exit door during an evacuation was extremely concerning and we let the office know. There were also differences between some property details I encountered while researching the hotel and what we experienced. Amenities and property details may change over time, but I wanted to provide an accurate account of our September 2026 stay. Afterward, the hotel sent a survey asking guests to provide feedback. I submitted a detailed account, including the emergency-exit concern, and offered to provide photographs. I did not receive a response. The River Inn has a wonderful location, and our stay was not entirely negative. We enjoyed Harbor Town, the restaurants, the river setting, and the view from our junior suite. However, after five nights, the combination of cleanliness, maintenance, communication, and service issues did not match the upscale experience we expected. We would happily return to Memphis and Harbor Town, but we would choose a different hotel next time.

My wife and I stayed at the beautiful River Inn on a Saturday night celebrating our wedding anniversary. The location was excellent offering a splendid view of the Mississippi River and a large park in the middle of quite, safe and secluded Harbor Town. The location offered an opportunity to take advantage of many downtown attractions such as Tim Lee Park which we did. The room was excellent with beautiful furniture and art and very clean. The hotel staff could not have been any friendlier. The area around the hotel and throughout the hotel was quite and relaxing. There were many amenities including wine or champaign when you check in, several very nice restaurants and the fourth floor bar offers one of the best views of the river in Memphis. The cost of our stay was very reasonable considering the quality of the hotel and all that came with it. I will definitely stay here again.

I was so glad to find this charming little hotel right on Mud Island! Don't stay in downtown Memphis when you can experience the tranquility and beauty of Harbor Town. This hotel is safe, immaculately clean, and has several restaurants to chose from. The desk clerk was friendly and there's plenty of free parking. I will be staying here again. Highly recommended!

I stay at the River Inn frequently. I love this place. They know me and treat me like family. The beds are very comfortable and the location is very safe. They are conveniently located to several dining places with in walking distance. Can’t go wrong with this hotel.

This is a serene boutique inn overlooking the Mississippi from within a lovely upscale neighbourhood. Tug is a place to relax with a nice, casual menu and cocktails.Paulette’s is upscale with a historic past. The Terrace combines views of the river with funky artwork and lovely appetizers to accompany drinks. But what really makes The River Inn special and welcoming is each and every member of the service team. John, Judy, and Skye.
