Little value for an incredibly expensive hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

I booked this as a surprise to my fiancée, and expected a five star experience (it's rated as a five star hotel). Let me tell you why this isn't worth the money. I booked the Zen Ocean suite. Pretty view of the ocean (duh) but it cost about $1500 a night. For that amount of money, it's definitely fine but I'd expect that the room furniture would be new (tables, chairs, shower showed signs of wear), lots of "fix-ins" like free minibar, and small details that make the stay special (drinks immediately cleared away in dining areas, responsive housekeeping, quick front desk). I've stayed at other Five Star non-Nobu properties, all of which are highlighted by impeccable service. For $1500 at the Nobu South Beach, here is the service you can expect: Dragging your own bags out of your car, up the stars, opening the door before even getting acknowledged by anyone other than the valet. No door man or greeter. Then waiting in a check-in line for 20 minutes, as there's only one person working the desk. Room wasn't ready (we had early check in but I get that it's not something they can control), so we wait at the hotel bar before heading to our spa appointments. 55$ on two cocktails (Miami prices, I guess) before going to the spa area. I splurged for the couples massage (400$ + 80$ mandatory tip), which was just okay. The pre-spa relaxation area features a sauna, steam room, showers, a small selection of products (nothing standout, the regular items you would expect), tiny hot tub and tiny cold plunge (both completely full while I was there). Prior to your appointment, you go to the co-ed relaxation room, which is just a few lounge chairs covered in towels and a selection of "make it your self" teas. Looked for a seat that didn't have someone else's half finished tea on the side table before getting called in for the massage. The masseuse was nice and professional, but the couples room had a bathtub (extra cost if you wanted to use) that was still full and draining from the previous session. So the first 10 minutes, we're treated to the relaxing sound of "glurg glurg glurg" as the water trains from the tub. 45 min later, massage is over and you're ushered out. I don't ever get massages, so I don't have a good grasp on what typically comes with them. But for nearly 500$, I'd expect waters, drink services, nicer amenities. For that kind of money, you're better off going somewhere else. Post-massage, we head to the room as it's now ready, but not before waiting in the front desk line for 15 minutes to get our keys (you'll notice a pattern here). Again, beautiful view in the room. Mini bar and fridge are stocked with items ranging between 10$ pringles to 50$ mini alcohol bottles. They did leave some macaroons on the table, which was nice. Bathroom is pretty and relatively clean. The glass door of the shower is a little gross but I get that house keeping likely isn't deep cleaning everything between stays. But here's the thing - for 1500$, you would expect that! I'd say for 600$ a night, yeah that's about what you'd expect but not for 1500$. Night continues on, we head to dinner (Macchialina - one of the best meals of my life, try the polenta and Cacio e Pepe) then return to the room. They've turned down the room and left us a lovely congrats note about our engagement, a fruit plate, and a 10$ bottle of champagne. I did appreciate that. Fast forward to the next day. Breakfast buffet is included through my Chase Card. About average fare. Think a shade above a Marriott. Fruit, eggs, sausage, coffee, waffles. Thank god it was included, as the bill for it was 100$ for two people. Noticing a pattern? It's one thing if you're a reasonably fancy hotel (3-4 star) and providing something like that, but if you're marketing yourself as the 5-star Nobu Hotel experience, you'd want a little more with the buffet. The 5-star Mandarin Oriental (now closed) had 3-4x as many food options for about the same price, all of better quality. We use the pool area, which had an adults only section that was nice and relaxing. The service there was very nice and professional. Limited lunch menu that ended up being just okay, especially considering the price. Now for the check-out. The valet app/website they provide was frustrating. It defaults your stay to an additional night (I'm guessing to hope someone doesn't notice and pays extra). There wasn't a button to charge to the room. 67$ for 1 night of valet, pre-tip. I call down to the front about 15 minutes before we depart to have them tell the valet to bring the car around, as well as asking it to be charged to our room (Chase grants 100$ credit for the property, which doesn't apply to any on-property restaurants. So this was about the only way to use it). Front desk person says of course, that they will tell them right away. We head down, only one person working the front desk. We wait for 25+ minutes before we're seen. I ask about the valet inquiry only to be told that they have no idea what we're talking about. We go out together to ask the valet about it, and they haven't heard anything either. Valet goes to grab the car. So for those counting, about 40 minutes have passed before someone goes to get the car. 45 by the time we get in and leave. All in all, I would say try somewhere else if you're going to spend that amount of money. Pros: the champagne and fruit tray were a nice touch; view was beautiful from the suite. Cons: you don't get very much for 1500$; service was average at best, subpar (front desk wait) at worst; felt like everything was trying to wring more money out of the stay. You can definitely do better in Miami Beach. If there was a way for me to go back in time and select a different hotel, I would.
