About the Hotel

Built in 1906, Le Montreux Palace is situated on the shores of Switzerland's Lake Geneva, overlooking the Alps. This opulent 19-century hotel has hosted Russian tsars, Sarah Bernhardt, Richard Strauss (who was inspired to compose his most famous waltzes here), and more recently, Sophia Loren, Miles Davis, Michael Jackson and Vladimir Nabokov. Famous for its Art Nouveau architecture - detailed frescos, stained glass windows, and chandeliers gracing the interior - this historic hotel is one of the best in the world.

Beautiful Hotel, Disappointing Service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

I visited Montreux with my two teenagers before they headed back to college, and the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace is without a doubt a beautiful hotel. The location right on Lake Geneva is incredible, and the building itself is stunning. We stayed in a renovated room facing the lake, and the view was absolutely gorgeous. The service, though, didn’t quite match the setting. Most of the staff we interacted with were polite and professional, but it all felt very businesslike. There wasn’t much effort to make a connection or add a personal touch, which was a little disappointing for a hotel of this caliber. The exception was the breakfast staff and the team at Montreux Jazz Café and the Lounge Bar — they were genuinely warm and welcoming, and we really appreciated that. Overall, while the property is impressive, the lack of warmth from most of the staff left me underwhelmed, and I would probably not visit again.

Beating heart of the Montreux Jazz Festival

Best place to enjoy the Montreux Jazz Festival. Be wary of the noise, specially in front of the hotel. Staff was amazing, breakfast incredible. Would come back on a quieter period though.

Lovely hotel with beautiful views, friendly staff and easy lake access

Just returned from a short stay with my 11 year old daughter as part of a bigger trip across France and Switzerland. What a wonderful stay we had. A warm welcome, beautiful room and lovely welcome gift of fresh fruit and chocolates. We booked a balcony room with lake view and it was well worth it. Very special to wake up to beautiful lake and mountain views. Breakfast service was excellent - all staff were lovely, with a simple buffet style breakfast. We didn’t eat in the other restaurants but did enjoy drinks by the pool most afternoons and again the staff there were amazing - I enjoyed a good chat with them about our day. The indoor and outdoor pool were very welcome after some busy days exploring. Location wise it took us five minutes to walk from Montreux train station so very easy. We ate down by the lakeside each night, either in one of the restaurants or at one of the street food trucks for a more relaxed evening. Hotel is right across the road from the lakeside promenade so again very easy. My daughter loved the mini golf next door. We also walked to Chateau Chillon, did some kayaking on the lake and took the cogwheel train to Rochers de Naye - all good ways to explore the area and very easy to do. On our final morning we chose to have breakfast in our room just for convenience whilst we were getting ready to leave and again this was very special and friendly service. Overall a wonderful stay where we felt very welcome and made to feel at home with staff who were attentive but never intrusive. Thank you for a memorable stay.

NOISE LOUD MUSIC ALL NIGHT. We are here now. July 20th. Sunday morning . The bar between the hotel and the lake plays loud thumping music all night. It is impossible to sleep. We complained the first night. The hotel said how sorry they were. Yesterday it went until 4am. It's currently 4.45am its still going. Do not stay here if you expect to sleep!

Glorious View Inglorious Service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Le Montreaux Palace Hotel has its place in history. Meandering around the old arrival entrance captures something of the grandeur and majesty this hotel enjoyed during its heyday. That magic is not completely lost in history, and Le Montreaux Palace Hotel still offers guests breathtaking views of the Alps across the majesty of Lac Leman. Service from staff is attentive and caring, from concierge to restaurants to reception, there is a genuine eagerness to please and offer a high level of customer satisfaction. Rooms are nicely appointed but fall short of offering the luxury that one would find at the Beau Rivage in Lausanne or the Hotel des Bergues in Geneve. Rooms overlooking Lac Leman offer the best views and being able to see Dents du Midi from dawn to dusk is glorious. Sadly, it is housekeeping, and their poor attention to detail that let down all the positive work of other staff. Returning to our room at 16:40, we were disappointed to see the room had not been made up. This was despite our informing housekeeping that the room was empty when we left at 10 am in the morning. A call to reception was responded with a request to clean the room now, which we declined as we had one hour to rest and change for dinner. We asked for fresh towels, they brought one set, so we had to call again for a second set. When the housekeeper arrived, I asked why the room had not been cleaned, her response was unacceptable. She replied (in French) that the hotel was full and one room always had to be last, today you win the prize! I was not impressed. During our 3 night stay and despite once again informing housekeeping, the hair conditioner in the shower was empty when we arrived and not refilled and the tissues in the bathroom ran out on day one and were not replaced during our stay. This is not a five-star service and reflects a management team not doing their job. The magic of the Vaud Riviera can be enjoyed from plenty of other hotels who have not forgotten to pay attention to detail.
