Feedback on a Deeply Disappointing Stay at Your Crested Butte

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

Subject: Feedback on a Deeply Disappointing Stay at Your Crested Butte To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to share feedback on a recent stay at your hotel in Cresta View. It brings me no joy to write a negative review, but I feel it’s important that the ownership is made aware of the condition and conduct of the property and its staff. From the moment we arrived, we encountered a lack of hospitality that deeply impacted our experience. Despite calling ahead and speaking with a manager who assured us that Mr. Balzer would be given access to a conference room, no such arrangement was ever honored. That initial breakdown in communication set the tone for the rest of our stay. Upon arrival, no one assisted us with our luggage or offered any form of greeting that would make guests feel welcome or valued. The front desk staff seemed disinterested and unprepared to answer basic questions about local amenities or hiking recommendations, which was disappointing given that the area is known for its natural beauty and outdoor activities. At 5 p.m., we were surprised to find that there was no food available on-site and that the bar was closed. While we understand that operational hours can vary, there was no communication—no signage, no welcome newsletter, and certainly no friendly suggestion pointing us toward nearby alternatives. Even a simple recommendation for local restaurants, or guidance toward a vending machine for a snack, would have gone a long way. The condition of the rooms and balconies was troubling. Housekeeping appeared inconsistent, and the maintenance level bordered on neglect. From poorly kept patios to a general lack of cleanliness, the room did not feel comfortable or well cared for. More disappointing than any one issue was the prevailing sense that guests were not a priority. The staff, while not overtly rude, were inattentive and disengaged. There was no warmth, no hospitality, and no follow-through. Mr. Balzer’s concerns were never addressed during or after the stay, leaving us with the impression that guest satisfaction is simply not a priority at this property. I would respectfully offer the following suggestions to elevate the guest experience: • Implement a clear, friendly welcome communication (newsletter or printed note) informing guests of hours of operation for amenities, nearby restaurants, recommended local activities, and key staff contacts. • Train staff in basic hospitality skills, with an emphasis on courtesy, attentiveness, and local knowledge. • Ensure that previously promised accommodations—such as conference rooms—are followed through with professionalism and consistency. • Maintain a minimum standard of cleanliness and upkeep in rooms and shared spaces, particularly outdoor patios. • Extend food and beverage availability into early evening hours or clearly post nearby alternatives. Cresta View has the potential to be a truly special destination, but without committed leadership and meaningful investment in guest care, that potential is being squandered. I sincerely hope this feedback reaches the owner or upper management, and that it is received in the spirit of honesty and care with which it was written. Warm regards, RB ⸻

Disappointing from start to finish

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

I should have realised when I used the restrooms in lobby before checking in and found that 2 out of 3 were out of order that things were not going to be as expected. The room we received was outdated, neglected and dirty. Three out of four of our pillows had stains as did the sheets. The white towels were grey and threadbare. We went to the hotel restaurant for one drink after checking in and the service was slow and we were served by at least 3 different people who really looked like they didn’t like their job. The best thing about this hotel is the short distance to Crested Butte. It’s a cute town with great bars and restaurants where we had an excellent dinner. The shower in this hotel is the worst I have ever experienced. There was so little water and pressure that I couldn’t get the soap out of my hair. We had booked a 2 night stay, but we decided to check out after one night. We explained why we were leaving early and requested a refund, but we told we could only be refunded the parking and resort fee. This hotel needs a total renovation. Don’t waste your money staying here.

Awful

Nope. Don't even think about it. You're better off sleeping in your car. When I walked into the lobby I wasn't sure if the hotel was open or had been condemned. It's a filthy, outdated, has been. Bonus, they charge a resort fee in case you want to swim in their cess pool or take a dip in a hot covid tub. I've traveled to 45 states and 15 countries and this is the worst place I have ever stayed. No AC in the units. Do yourself a favor and stay at a camp ground.

Horrible

I have to say, my recent stay here was lackluster and very disappointing. My wife and I stayed with our 8 month old and dog for Memorial Day weekend. We have been eaten alive by god knows what in the bed, found glass on the floor on numerous occasions (great with a dog and kid crawling around) and were welcomed our first night by one of their employees 2 dogs charging us in the parking garage while we were unloading. No one once came to our room and changed anything out, trash, linens, or towels. Yes, we went during slow season, and they are renovating the hotel soon, but just shut it down now if they don’t plan to operate like they should be. It’s horrific given what we were paying a night. Highly recommend anywhere other than here.

Gross like an old motel.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 months ago

The dirty room they put us in wasn’t what we paid for online. We prepaid for a room with a stove. I called the front desk and let the person know and she said because I paid with a 3rd party (Citibank) they couldn’t help plus they didn’t have anymore rooms. I let her know I had already bought groceries on the way. She said she was sorry and if I had booked through them they could have fixed it. I was polite and tried not to let it ruin my day. But I had to stuff everything in a mini fridge and the fridge didn’t get very cold. The microwave smell was so gross. I tried to clean the microwave with Clorox wipes and leave the door open to let it air out even after that, the smell of our room was so bad. The sofa bed was dusty and ancient looking. Lots of dust in the arm creases. We tried bagging the pillows with garbage bags it was so dusty. The big bed was uncomfortable and my back ached at night. The towels were dingy and like sandpaper. (No washcloths) Pink mold in the humidifier. The comforters were like pancakes, like all of the cotton had washed out over time. No robes in the room…I could go on and on. The TV was really old and the stations they had are a joke. The hot tub just bubbled a little..switch broken for the high powered jets. I spoke with a woman who flew in from London and she said her room was horrible too. She was so upset. No robes in her room and it went what she booked. We’ve been staying at this hotel each year for years and I’m just sad it’s so bad now. The staff was nice. The manager tried to make it right by sending up someone to clean again and bring us missing items from the room but we still had to call again later for TP and never rec wash cloths. We didn’t even have a door hanger like everyone else. The manager comped us some drinks and resort fees. I think 30 a day. She mentioned this was all unacceptable. The woman from London was told the same thing I believe. This was like staying in an old motel. We were really homesick day 1 but tried to make the best of it.
