Reviews for Andaz Munich Schwabinger Tor

LOVED it!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

We loved our stay so much, we have decided to stay again this year. We checked in on my birthday and the agent (Thank you Lisa!) generously upgraded our room and included breakfast. Talk about being wowed. This is kind of a quirky hotel but it suited us and our sense of adventure. Breakfast is chaotic most mornings but we were in vacation and in no hurry. We just enjoyed the vibe. Our room was beautiful, comfortable and clean with a lovely view. We found it very convenient to get around town , with the tram directly across the street. We felt we were treated like VIPs and can't wait to stay again.

Lackluster Service Quality & Overall Experience (3 Night Stay - Standard Suite)

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I booked a 3 night stay at the Andaz Schwabinger Tor in Munich back in October 2024 and had a very subpar experience that I felt was not reflective of the Hyatt Andaz brand. While I did find the front desk hotel staff, as well as the spa and pool staff, to all be super pleasant and helpful, there were several aspects of my stay that would make me hesitant to stay at this hotel again, or recommend it to friends and family traveling to Munich. To start, I had used one of my suite upgrade awards to book a junior suite. I arrived at the hotel just shortly before noon, after traveling 6+ hours from Prague by train, to check in, and front desk staff told me that my room should be ready at 1 PM. I left to grab some food and came back around 1:30 PM, and the front desk staff informed me that they were actually upgrading me to a standard suite but the upgraded room was not ready yet (though it would be ready “very soon”). I was pleasantly surprised at the upgrade and didn’t mind waiting a little longer, so I went to the bar. At 2:30 PM, I circled back with the front desk and was told my room was still not ready (apparently my room was all cleaned but needed "supervisor sign off"). I was definitely getting antsy to get into my room but I figured it would be ready no later than 3 PM (the standard check-in time at this hotel), so what is another 30 mins of waiting in the lobby area? Frustratingly, the room was still not ready at 3 PM as still waiting for "supervisor sign off; the front desk staff apologized and said they were going to see what’s happening and let me know asap. At 3:30 PM, I heard nothing so I followed up with the front desk again and the new staff member (they had changed shifts) personally went to find the supervisor to see what was causing the delay, and was finally able to give me the keys to my room. If I had known it was going to take this long, I would have just stuck with the junior suite. Once I finally entered the suite, there were some surprising oversights. The handwritten note in my room was addressed to a completely different guest (another male of asian descent), and the in-room TV system displayed another guest's information. I called the front desk and they said that the incorrect guest details in the TV system was caused by the suite upgrade and that they wouldn’t be to fix it for my entire stay. Fortunately, this issue didn’t impact my actual stay or charges, though the lack of attention to detail here was a bit alarming. As for the suite itself, it was definitely spacious but I felt the room amenities and decor were just a bit basic. Having just stayed at the Andaz in Prague for 4 nights before coming to Munich, I was expecting the same high-quality bedding, toiletries, glassware, Nepresso machine, etc; unfortunately, these expectations were not met. We also had dinner at the hotel restaurant - the Lonely Broccoli - and I’ll just say that the service was terrible and it was an extremely regrettable choice for our last night in Munich. We ordered drinks to start (just 2 beers) and had to wait over 30 minutes to get them, and that was only after I had followed up with a waiter. We then put in our appetizer and main course orders and after waiting 45 minutes, I asked a passing waiter to kindly check with the kitchen since our appetizer still had not made it out. The person who took our order came to our table to apologize and said the kitchen was backed up but was working on it, and gave us some bread. It was clear to us that they just forgot to put our orders in, and only put them in after we had followed up ... again. When our meals finally came out a full hour and 10 minutes after we placed them, we were very put off by poor quality of service we received and simply asked the server to just box everything up to go. I would have been more understanding if the restaurant was extremely busy or if the server/waiter would have occasionally stop at our table and let us know our orders are being worked on (instead of me having to chase again and again) but neither were the case here unfortunately.

Do not stay here

Chose this hotel because it was affiliated with AMEX and I expected a luxury experience. It was my friends first time traveling internationally and I wanted it to be special. Start to finish, we felt as though the staff while friendly didn't care about us. Breakfast was included and the first day we got there they sat us down asked us what we wanted to drink and seemingly forgot what we wanted because 20 minutes later, no beverages so I had to track down a server because no one came to check in on us. The breakfast is actually a really nice buffet but there is a menu to order from for additional food which no one told us about (it's in a box in the center of the table). We wouldn't have been able to order it anyway as no server came up to us without us having to grab them. Several similar incidents. Overall, would be a non issue at a 3/4 star but incredibly disappointing in a 5 star hotel and I am beyond frustrated that this affected my friends first international trip. The bathroom is a toilet. Literally on the left when you enter the room there is a door with JUST a toilet. Then weirdly the center of the room has a makeshift bathroom (the sink is here in case you wanted to wash your hands before you leave the bathroom you can't). There are two see through sliding doors creating a semi closed off sink and shower which isn't private. The "wall" is a glass wall which you can close some shutters on but not the see through sliding doors and super uncomfortable when it's two friends staying there who can inadvertently see something they don't want to see . The A/C didn't work. Can't decide who designed these rooms but comfort and privacy were not considered. A joke for a 5 star hotel.

Flawed experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

We stayed for 2 nights and it started already with the info that both rooftop bar and main restaurant are closed both Sundays and Mondays, not acceptable for 5* hotels in any circumstance. Andaz Suite big but flawed design: huge hallway when you enter but not usable at all: no closet or drawers, just some weird small shelf space where you can actually not put anything. Then stains all over the walls, no proper heating, small washing basin in separate bathroom toilet but no soap dispenser or towels. No towel racks or hangers for bathrobes and the dressing is for clothes hanging face front, not sideways which is a big waste of space. Upon checkout we were asked to pay the prepaid room again. So average is really a good review in this context, can be much better!

Great Munich Stay

The front desk staff were super friendly, and the managers introduced themselves. They constantly asked how they could help us and gave us great insights and directions. The room was very modern and comfortable. The restaurant called the Lonely Br occoli was really neat. The restaurant staff are super friendly as well.
