Not Five Star, but has some positives

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

The hotel, while once very nice, has had zero maintenance done. I don’t think the exterior has been repainted in 10 years, so you’ll see paint peeling, lightbulbs burned out, etc., which is sad. During my stay, the hotel had hardly any ice and no complimentary fruit or muffins for breakfast. On the positive side, they allowed us to substitute with French toast for free, so that was a plus. The rooms are spacious and clean, but they have serious issues with their showers. This was my 3rd visit (3 diff rooms), and all 3 of them had problems with the shower drain, causing water to spill out all over the floor (it’s the design). The water pressure isn’t great and I hate the rainfall shower heads. If you have long hair, bring your own hairdryer because the ones on the wall are terrible. The pool was dirty for the first four days before the maintenance guy cleaned out the leaves. I never saw anyone in the pool the entire time I was there. On the plus side, the beach is very private and there is no music, so if you’re working remotely, it’s perfect. The Internet is strong and reliable. I typically stay next-door at Coco, but they blast music — not conducive to remote work or relaxing on the beach. The staff was really great. I hope they can find a new owner that will put money back into the place, because it has the potential to be great again. In the meantime, the nightly rates are not commensurate with what you get in return. That said, I would stay again for the right price.

Could have been great.

Although the hotel was once a boutique hotel it is not that way now. You can tell by the beautiful rooms that this was once a real gem to stay in. The restaurant Bongos is closed, the beach bar doesn't always have ice or even Red Stripe beer. There is no ice machine instead you get a cooler put in your room for you to find your own ice. The mini fridge in the room is not a true fridge but a cooling fridge. There is no cable t.v. They have Youtube and Netflix instead. The hot tub looks like it is permanently closed and the day beds on the beach need to be cleaned. The positive is the staff. They are all great people who want to help where they can. Felt sorry for the bartenders because they have nothing to work with and therefore no customers. Mr. Wright, the manager, is working hard to keep guests happy however, when the owner doesn't put money into the hotel, his hands are tied. I would stay here again but not for this price. It is far to expensive for what it is now.

Oh, how sad

This used to be a fantastic place. The staff still are wonderful, but whoever owns it is a disgrace. Hopefully someone else will be in charge soon.

Beautiful room and lovely ocean view balcony. Hotel is badly managed.

The staff here is wonderful, however the hotel is not being managed correctly. Minimal breakfast of only toast and bacon; no fruit and no pastries or eggs. The room was very nice. The grounds pertaining to the cabana area have been abandoned. Very bad looking with mold and disrepair makes the beachfront area look bad. No food at the bar and sometimes not even any wine. We went elsewhere to eat and drink

Not our happy place anymore

We have been to Sandy Haven 3 times. The entire staff is truly amazing. We were surprised to find out that the staff were not being paid. Absolutely disgusting way to treat their incredible, kind employees. Breakfast dwindled down to nothing by the end of our week. Seems like they will be bankrupt soon. Very sad.

Staff is top notch, classy, personable and plenty of them. The Chef is phenomenal; food is best around. All other places offered the same foods but not at Bongos! Go, stay at Sandy Haven and you won't be disappointed.
