About the Hotel

Exquisitely and eclectically designed, The Fifth Avenue Hotel offers a realm of imagination to delight the senses in the elegant NoMad neighborhood of Midtown Manhattan.

A historic New York Gilded Age landmark reimagined as a luxury destination, The Fifth offers thoughtful service with the utmost comfort and care; and exceptional cuisine overseen by award-winning Chef Andrew Carmellini.

The Fifth Avenue Hotel is built on the former estate of Mrs. Charlotte Goodridge, a legendary Gilded Age hostess whose home was the epicenter of culture and discourse in 19th-century New York City. The mansion then housed a fine art gallery before being reimagined by legendary architectural firm McKim, Mead & White as the stately Second National Bank.

Today, following a 10-year restoration by Flâneur Hospitality, the original brick and limestone Renaissance-style palazzo is complemented by a shimmering 24-story modern glass tower. The two impressive edifices embody the marriage of classic, sumptuous luxury and sophisticated innovation that help to create an unsurpassed guest experience at The Fifth.

A Beautiful Hotel That Made Us Feel Unwelcome

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I never leave reviews, but I feel obligated to warn others in this particular case. My partner and I stayed in The Studio Suite at The Fifth Avenue Hotel for several nights in November. It was (no exaggeration) the worst hotel experience we have ever had. That includes budget hotels and genuinely world class luxury properties. The gap between this hotel’s reputation and the reality of our stay was shocking. We joked that the hotel must have identified exactly who the Condé Nast and Michelin inspectors were and treated them accordingly, because there is no other way to explain the praise this place receives. Someone should look into this. Seriously. Some context that is unfortunately and uncomfortably relevant. We are a younger couple in our early 30s from the Bay Area, work in tech, and dress casually -- jeans, puffer coats, hoodies, beanies, etc. From the moment we arrived, it was clear we did not resemble the hotel’s preferred clientele, who skewed older, white, gaudy, and flashy. That difference shaped nearly every interaction we had. The good: The room itself is well designed and comfortable, with eclectic decor and complimentary in room snacks. Rooms are quiet and the location is close to a lot of shopping nearby. That is where the positives end. The bad: The hotel gym was tiny and so dirty to the point of being unusable. One of the staff members even warned us about it in the elevator on our way there. I unrolled a yoga mat that was wet and visibly soiled with dirt, as if it had been stored outdoors. These are not the amenities we paid top dollar for. The toiletries were cheap and unlabeled. At comparable 5 star hotels like Four Seasons, you get established brands with ingredient information. Here, there was no way to know what we were putting on our skin. The products caused my partner some irritation as well. Service was amateur at best. One concierge, named Ben, was openly hostile, particularly when contrasted with how warmly he treated older white guests nearby. I am South Asian and do not make accusations lightly, but this interaction was unmistakable (iykyk) discriminatory, and immediately conveyed that we were not welcome. We were also repeatedly stopped by the doorman, physically blocked from entering the hotel, and asked what we were doing there, despite being guests. This happened every time we entered. We have stayed at many high end hotels and have never experienced anything like this. We raised these issues with management and were offered a 50 percent discount on our stay. That alone should speak volumes. If you are younger, a person of color, or simply do not fit the hotel’s apparent ideal guest, I would strongly reconsider staying here.

Beautiful property, but guests are not prioritized when it comes to use of facilities

Beautiful, design-forward hotel. Rooms are well-appointed and the beds very comfy. Nice location. Great breakfast at Cafe Carmellini. Our only disappointment during our one night stay was the hotel bar. There is not a lobby bar that can accommodate most hotel guests, only the Portrait Bar, which is small and must be reserved in advance (like a couple of weeks before you arrive from the looks of the current availability on Resy). Without a reservation, you can not even stand at the bar and have a cocktail. Given the space constraints, this bar should be reserved for hotel guests only. The inability to have a cocktail at the hotel before heading out for the evening without the hassle of reserving far in advance prevents this from being a true 5-star experience for guests. Lovely design is great, but true luxury is in the experience one has and unfortunately, the Fifth Avenue Hotel falters in this regard. I hope they will consider changing their policies and prioritizing their paying guests when it comes to access to their facilities.

Fifth Avenue Fantastic

What a great hotel. Located in a great, energetic part of the city, I loved my stay at the Fifth. Room was insanely nice - stayed in a Mansion Suite and had a separate bedroom, living room and huge bathroom. Felt like a little apartment in the city, and the amenities, from the complimentary minibar to the convenient steamer when my dress shirt was wrinkled, only added to the sense of luxury. Having the Portrait Bar and Cafe Carmellini downstairs as the dining options only added to experience. A lot of hotels in NYC are boring, same design, blah rooms - there's no place like this one that's for sure.

A bit more would have changed our experience.

I really wanted to love this hotel, but it didn't meet the mark for customers who expect perks. We are leader members and amex (as well as used to getting things working with an advisor), and while we did get our breakfast included, a room upgrade didn't happen – despite availability. The hotel is very small, a tiny lobby and our entry-level room was the same. There was a small half closet to put our things and the bathroom can fit one person at a time. It was very tight in the room, so we really didn't spend any time which we usually like to feel that luxury tone of a hotel room. The breakfast was amazing, as was the hotel bar. Though it's busy, so one night they sat us but the other night at 6:00 there was no room. We were introduced to our butler and there were promises of delights, surprises during our stay. I text once for a request that wasn't full-filled, just a coffee to the room in the morning. And not once did we get a "gift" despite seeing them every day in the elevator delivering to other guests. We didn't expect anything, but felt a lack of hospitality because it was something that was mentioned as something we should feel excited about. I do want to say if you are new to luxury hotel stays or properties, this might just be right for you! But if you are a seasoned traveller who is used to being dotted on and that above and beyond hospitality, they haven't quite figured that out. Lastly, we did get what we paid for, in terms of our room.
