Mixed Emotions

Booked 2 night stay 9/1 to 9/3 thru booking.com so I was happy with the original cost. Unfortunately I felt like because I booked thru a discounted site I got the discounted room (the type of room that's not shown on the website pics under the same classification). Extremely small room and AC was extremely loud and rattled but we figured "is what it is". First night room was 74 degrees regardless of thermostat set at 67, so sleep was horrible. Left for event at 8am next morning and asked for it to be fixed, returned 6 hours later and room was now 75/76. after politely complaining again they said they have so many rooms available and would move us to another room down the hall.....it was bigger, nicer, cooler (the pics are on the website). The hotel was empty after the holiday weekend, not sure why they didn't do that day one when we checked in. We can say that Maureen (our server) in the restaurant was absolutely amazing. Personable, kind, attentive, and all around great person. She chatted with us like we'd known each other for years while we went over the menu..... she even spoke to the front desk after hearing about our first nights sleep when we spoke again for dinner the second night. When we finally checked out we received a nice credit towards a dinner and resort fee was waived which helped me reconsider my emotions about our stay. I was surprised about the $48.15 (PER NIGHT) valet parking fee but guess that's my fault. I've never heard of a fee for parking at the hotel you're staying at. Tip valet people, yes, but never paid that kinda fee. With that said, we might consider staying again if the room was similar to the second room we got but even if we stayed elsewhere........we'd go have dinner at the restaurant just to see Maureen (Plus food was delicious- lol) Paul and Pasang

Great location, that’s about it.

We are pretty low maintenance travelers, so when we got to this room and saw the poor condition of the bathroom, I didn’t bother much. The drains were rusted, the ceiling had bubbling paint, and the toilet was so close to the door that you had to stand over the toilet it to get the door shut. The room itself was clean and in decent condition, so we unpacked our stuff and went about enjoying our vacation. Hotel Viking couldn’t be in a better location. It is on Bellevue Ave, and there are a few near shops right across the street. It’s walking distance from Thames, where all the activity is happening, and the bus stop is practically right in front of the hotel, giving you free travel to the best mansions Newport has to see. (In the summer, the 77 and 68 bus routes are completely free.) When we arrived back to our room the first night (admittedly tipsy from enjoying our first day), the bathroom ceiling was leaking water. Everything was wet. I called the front desk, who said “Hm, that’s interesting, I’ll see if we can send someone.” We waited 20 minutes and no one came. I tried to call again, and got no answer, so I got dressed and dragged myself to the front desk to find someone to help. The front desk clerk was off enjoying their evening with the valets, and couldn’t hear the phone I guess. She said she’d send someone right away. Thankfully, this time someone showed up. The maintenance man told us that the ceiling shouldn’t be leaking, because he turned off the water to the room above us and it was completely unoccupied. He asked if we wanted to move rooms. Honestly, I was too tired to be outraged by the question, but that was solved for us when the light fixture fell from the ceiling and crashed to the floor. He told us we would have to move. So we packed up all our things, were given keys to another room and we hauled our luggage up a floor to another room with another disgusting bathroom. This one had patched up walls, chipped paint on the tub, peeling grout. I think my frustration from the hotel came from the fact that no one seemed surprised or concerned about a leaking ceiling, almost like it was a regular occurrence. No credit or refund was offered. No upgrade or anything. That said, the rest of the room was clean, and the rooftop bar was a lot of fun. If they could get their bathroom situation together and work on their customer service, the hotel would be an easy 4.

Somewhat disappointed

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Room condition needs improvement. Bathroom door did not close. Bathroom tile falling off wall near toilet. TV said please wait for an extended time and then the guide did not provide information. Multiple fire pits inoperative at the roof top bar. Staff was outstanding, facility clean. But I would have expected the facility to be top notch. Unfortunately that was not the case.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Viking. It has a great location, and the hotel was very nice. The staff was friendly, and the bartenders were great.

We got married at Kay Chapel and had our reception at the Hotel Viking in December. The entire event was everything that I hoped it would be! The Hotel Viking is traditional, outstanding and eloquent. Our reception was in the Bellevue Ballroom and everything was beautiful. The staff was exceptional! They were there for us throughout the evening and paid such close attention to all of the guests! The hotel service was also outstanding. I am delighted to give the Hotel Viking the highest of reviews.
