About the Hotel

Econdido Oaxaca is the new addition to the Grupo Habita collection of unique hotels that use architecture, design, and history to provide an authentic experience to guests. Tucked away in one of the most culturally-rich places in Mexico - Oaxaca City - resides Escondido Oaxaca, a Hotel whose main mission is to represent all that is authentic. We have recovered the original construction to house the restaurant, bar, “Culture Room”, patio and four rooms. A contemporary tower was added to the back of the Hotel where eight more rooms are located (two with patios and six with balconies). A mix of old and new; honoring the great wealth of Oaxaca: the savoir-faire of its artisans. Note that this hotel can be noisy.

Oaxaca oasis?

The hotel was charming and quaint. We had a balcony room, which faced away from the main streets (the hotel is in a corner of two busy streets). We could still hear the noise from the buses and cars either honking their horns or accelerating to go up the hill. Construction in the building beside the hotel had us hearing jackhammers going until late in the evening. Despite that, the hotel managed to redeem itself largely through its extremely professional yet friendly staff. From the reception to the restaurant, we felt welcomed and taken cared of. Too bad the noise levels were just beyond what they could manage.

Really enjoyed the property. Modern but authentic. Great dining and great mezcal. Roof top is excellent as is the location. Highly recommended. Not too many rooms so not overly crowded. Front desk and bar staff were very helpful with all sorts of recommendations.

Rooms are terrible. Come for lunch, but stay elsewhere.

Do not stay here. Come visit for lunch / dinner, or go to the pool — the food is amazing and the common space is nice, but the rooms and service are atrocious. We arrived for a stay over NYE, and were excited at the beautiful common space and the amazing beach when we checked in. We sat by the pool and looked at the ocean. Everything was amazing until they showed us our room. The rooms are dark and dingy, and have clearly not been maintained. It seems like they also have not been cleaned regularly. Our room had a huge scorpion in it, and it took them 12 hours to send someone to remove it. There is a beautiful plunge pool in the back, but ours was covered in algae and filled with bugs. When we asked them to clean it, they just came and dumped chlorine into it (and left all the algae and dead bugs). There were tons of dead and living bugs in the room, lots of dust and sand, and every night when we came back there were pieces of mouse poop on the bed. The rooms are dark and dingy, with poor lighting. The lamp beside the bed was broken, and dangling by just the cord. They do not clean your room by default. When we asked them to clean it, they came a few hours later and replaced the towels and sheets. Unfortunately, a large amount of cash went missing from the table during the cleaning — should have put the cash in the safe! This seems like it used to be a great hotel, but nobody maintained it for the past 10 years. This is unfortunately seems pretty common in my experience with Grupo Habita. They build amazing common areas that are prime for Instagram, but their rooms are terrible. Come for lunch and dinner and to enjoy the common areas — but stay elsewhere!
