About the Hotel

Tucked into the rugged landscape of Barbagia near Oliena, Sardinia, Su Gologone Experience Hotel is far more than a place to stay—it is an immersive celebration of Sardinian art, cuisine, craftsmanship and tradition. Originally opened as a restaurant in 1967, the family-run property has evolved into a distinctive 71-room retreat where every space reflects the island, from locally carved wood and traditional textiles to works by Sardinian artists. Accommodations range from characterful rooms to imaginative Experience Suites and the Wild Suite, where guests can even sleep beneath the stars. The hotel’s 25-meter spring-fed pool, hot tub and small spa—featuring treatments incorporating Sardinian aromatic and medicinal herbs—provide peaceful places to unwind. Food remains at the heart of the experience, with traditional cheeses, handmade pasta, pane carasau, spit-roasted meats and local wines showcased at the main restaurants.

Reviews for Su Gologone

Impressive place but treatment of families with children far less so.

This is an impressive place; tucked away outside Oliena on a large hilly site, it is an estate with a hotel at its centre and with plenty of places to visit in the grounds: bars a pool area, tennis courts and dining spaces are there to explore if you are physically fit to scramble and ascend to the locations. The main building has a wealth of local artefacts throughout, from fruit presses to carnival masks to intrigue and offer an interesting range of visual features. But a perfect venue? Not quite. The entrance road is rocky, although laid to be that way - the furthest reaches of the car park are distant, and at first we couldn’t find the hotel until we noticed a pointer to reception the size of a dinner plate underneath a bush. Although clean, comfortable and spacious, it’s always the service and atmosphere that makes a hotel special. We were with a family party attending a wedding. A group arrived with three small children after a long drive on the day of the event, after which they were to stay the night. Despite having contacted the hotel to ask for an early check in to care for the little ones and prepare for the ceremony in the local church, they were kept waiting in reception for hours, ignored by the staff, trying to feed the hungry children and not offered any refreshment or a space to relax whilst the rooms were prepared. The check out next day was ten o’clock on the dot. We weren’t impressed. Maybe they prefer an adult clientele. Families, bear this in mind. We won’t be returning.

Exceptional service and a very memorable stay

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We really enjoyed our stay at Su Gologone. The service was exceptional from beginning to end. Even small touches, like taking our luggage directly from the car when we arrived and bringing it back down for us at departure, made the experience feel especially thoughtful. The property itself is wonderful. We loved all of the intimate little nooks, terraces, and spaces throughout the hotel—it feels like there is always somewhere new to discover, and so much of the design and experience seems very intentional. We had half board and thought the dinner was excellent. We also arranged a private art class for our children, which they really enjoyed, along with visiting the chickens and exploring the garden. Our only minor frustrations were really more a matter of timing, circumstance, and cultural differences than faults of the hotel. There was a wedding taking place during part of our stay, so certain restaurant and bar areas were unavailable at times, and the property was a bit noisier and more crowded than it otherwise might have been. Dinner beginning at 8:00 p.m. is completely normal in Sardinia, but it can be difficult when traveling with young children. The hotel was very accommodating and made plain pasta for our kids through room service even outside normal kitchen hours, which we greatly appreciated. That said, after eating mostly plain pasta at our previous hotel as well, we would have loved to see a few more child-friendly meal options. As Sardinia becomes easier to reach from the U.S. and attracts more American families, I think hotels and restaurants offering even a small kids’ menu—with a few simple alternatives to pasta—would be welcomed with open arms. At the same time, we completely understand that this isn’t traditionally expected here and certainly wouldn’t hold it against the hotel. Overall, we had a wonderful stay. Su Gologone is distinctive, beautiful, full of character, and clearly run by people who care about the guest experience. We would happily recommend it.

Love this place! But don’t expect a usual 5* it’s 5* but in its own quirky way, and that’s why it’s a must visit exper i

If you love quirky and unique places which include, nature, art, rustic, historic, authentic Sardinia, then you must book this place. Its owner had created something truly magical here. Her touch is everywhere around the complex. Filled with Sardinian art collected over many years, some ancient and some contemporary. It’s hard to explain this hotel as you need to see it to understand and appreciate. I have travelled all over the world, and at some excellent hotels, but this one comes left field but in a really good way. I do understand some of the negative comments, but really they are not seeing the place for what it really is. Tbh. I would suggest that perhaps you need some depth to fully appreciate what has been cleverly created here. I’ve been in business for very long time, and the ingredients of something amazing are here. It’s still growing and evolving and will probably not stop. I hope! Especially in this day and age of artificial nonsense. This place is exactly real and rustic and we both loved it. We shall be back!!

2/3 Star Experience for 5 Star Price - DO NOT RECOMMEND

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 months ago

This is not a good hotel for kids and honestly dirty and not worth the money, it’s SO expensive for an outdated and dirty hotel with an unheated pool, mediocre food, and aging furniture and grounds - we left early. For PARENTS: we checked in to our hotel room and the floors are slick, including in the shower, where my 7 year old daughter fell and hit her head. Over the next two days, my kids fell multiple times on the slick floors. I would also suspect there are mold in the hotel rooms. And there are no duvets - just scratchy blankets. Given the cost of this hotel, I would expect a way higher standard. We checked out early and I asked for my money back for the last night (almost $2,000), which they refused despite the unsafe accommodation for families. Until I requested my money back, the staff was kind, but the manager was unreasonable and rude. I also note the hotel is dirty - the “mini golf” is plastic and dirty, and the offerings on their website are not available. We booked a cooking class weeks before our arrival which was not available when we showed up. The pool and hot tub are not heated, and surrounded by dirty furniture. I would not recommend staying here - 3 star accommodations for 5 star prices. The area is lovely though - stay somewhere else. 10000000% not worth even half the cost of a nightly stay.
