About the Hotel

At only 20 minutes from touch-down to sand, El Mangroove is a contemporary boutique hotel with a unique personality. It contains 85 bohemian-chic suites surrounded by forest, beach and mangrove that are only steps away from the ocean. Large rooms, with seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces, create a comfortable and relaxing haven. The suites are situated within 3 two-story buildings, which are set in front of glass-like water mirrors and nestled amongst the mangrove. The two on-site restaurants Matiss and Makoko offer a combination of laid-back modern cuisine and sensorial gastronomy. Service is personalized and attentive; guests call it outstanding. The resort captures the simplistic yet exotic character of Costa Rica, with natural wood furnishings, regional artwork and contemporary stone finishes. The beautiful spa, fitness center and long, cabana-flanked swimming pool make up the perfect mix of indulgence and barefoot luxury.

Great Experience!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

El Mangroove is absolutely beautiful and the staff is very friendly and helpful. It is an excellent location to check out, enjoy nature and tap into the pura vida life. Bryan went above and beyond to make our experience unforgettable. He was very kind and attentive. We looked forward to seeing him at the pool. Fabian made absolutely delicious cocktails. Looking forward to visiting again!

Great experience

Beautiful setting, excellent service. The staff is extremely responsive to your needs. There are 3 restaurants. The breakfast was exceptional!! Buffet or table service. We are Titanium level so our breakfast was free. We were here with our 18 year old Grandson. He had the best time. We had a junior suite, a king bed and a separate room for him. We shared 1 bathroom. Housekeeping twice daily. The only negative was the poor lighting in the large bathroom and the 3 American TV channels that had no sound. All in all a wonderful stay. Highly recommend El Mangroove. We highly recommend El Mangroove.

Staff was top notch !! Hotel is tired

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

The staff is the best !!! Couldn’t be nicer !! Couldn’t be more friendly !! The resort is very very tired !! It needs a major new facelift. The bathrooms the rooms are very old and tired looking. It needs a new 2024 renovation. I loved the staff and couldn’t say enough amazing things about them.

Nice business hotel, not a “destination” hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Decent hotel but it’s definitely a business/conference hotel and not a “destination” hotel. If you or your partner get invited to a work meeting here, it would be perfect. But I can’t recommend it for a week long family vacation. Service was hit or miss. Despite having a guaranteed connecting room as we were part of a tour group, the hotel inexplicably moved my young children several buildings away. Completely unacceptable. Shockingly, 5 different people tried to help at the front desk but not one of them was empowered to do anything to fix it. Only because another guest overheard our plight and gave us their connecting rooms was the problem solved. HUGE miss on the hotels part. Also, the reception desk has no shade for guests (only staff) so expect to sit there in the beating hot sun. It’s 95+ degrees here, so trust me when I say sitting in the sun is brutal. Grounds are pretty but the hotel is small. You’ll feel cramped after 2 days. Activities through the water sports desk are INSANELY priced. Definitely look elsewhere for activities. I expect resort prices to be high, but these were next level. Food was decent. Breakfast had a lot of variety but they ran out of tables quickly. Service at the pool was good.

Unfortunate checkout process

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Lots to like about this property but the ending took it from 5 stars to 1 stars. The person when checking us in said it would be only 5 to 10 US dollars for a ride to the Secrets our next stay. Secrets is a 4 minute drive or 1.8 kilometers. Not far. When checking out they said it would be $85 US dollars for that 4 minute 1 way ride. This was a ride for just my wife and I. After 15 minutes of seeing what the hotel would do, they would lower it to $35 dollars. On sheer principle we decided to do the 25 minute walk vs being extorted. To make matters worse they added Mini Bar charges to the bill that we didn't utilize. I'm a simple traveler that would give almost any Marriott stays 5 stars. I caution travelers staying at this hotel. Nice property but has elements of being shady.
