We checked into the Royal at Atlantis today. I am a Marriott Platinum Elite member, and while this reservation was made through Chase, I have consistently received recognition and benefits at other properties even when booking through third-party or corporate channels. The property itself is impressive in terms of scale and amenities. However, it’s important to set expectations around elite recognition. There was no proactive acknowledgment of status at check-in, and only very minimal amenities ie a simple deink and snack were provided—and only after I asked. This may come as a surprise to frequent Marriott travelers who are accustomed to some level of recognition regardless of booking channel. Here, the experience is clearly structured as a resort-first model, where most value is tied to paid upgrades rather than loyalty status. Overall, a beautiful property, but not one where elite status translates into meaningful benefits without having to actively request them.

We recently stayed at Atlantis Paradise Island and it was, without exaggeration, one of the most disappointing resort experiences we’ve ever had—especially considering the price and reputation. From the moment we arrived at the airport, it was chaos. We were supposed to have a luxury SUV picking us up, Atlantis had never let them know, so we stood out at the airport for nearly an hour waiting for a car. The lobby was completely overrun with spring break crowds, and we waited nearly 40 minutes just to check in. We arrived at 2:00 PM and were told our room wouldn’t be ready until 4:00, which would’ve been fine—if the check-in process itself hadn’t already eaten up so much time. We decided to grab lunch while we waited, which was our first real taste of what this place has become: wildly overpriced and underwhelming. Nearly $200 for two adults and two kids—with no alcohol—and somehow they still manage to charge extra for something as basic as a side of sour cream. It honestly felt like being nickel-and-dimed at every turn. After lunch, we headed back to the front desk and waited another 30 minutes just to get a text with our room number and have keys remade. When we finally got to the room, it was completely average—definitely not the “upgrade” we were told we received. It was exactly what we booked, nothing more, nothing less. Not sure who they think they’re fooling with that. Dining only got worse from there. Every single restaurant was booked out nearly a week in advance. We added ourselves to multiple waitlists and never got a single opening before we left. So unless you plan your meals like you’re buying concert tickets, be prepared to either go hungry or massively overpay for whatever is available. And yes—expect $200+ meals across the board, plus an automatic 15% gratuity whether the experience warrants it or not. The condition of the resort is honestly shocking. So many things were closed “for repairs,” yet there was no visible work being done. About half of the water slides were shut down, which is kind of a big deal at a place that markets itself as a water park destination. The Wi-Fi barely worked the entire stay, and by this morning, NONE of THREE elevators was functioning. One of them was already down upon arrival, For a resort of this size, that’s unacceptable. Then there’s the water situation. You’re handed reusable water bottles at check-in—which would be great—except there’s no actual water provided in the room. Everything has to be purchased, and the tap water tastes bad enough that we avoided it entirely. For what you’re paying to stay here, that’s honestly ridiculous. And the rules? Over-the-top to the point of being absurd. My 13-year-old stepdaughter was told she couldn’t take a quick photo at a pool at 7:00 in the morning because it was an “adult pool.” She was also denied access to the gym—even while supervised by her father—despite being a state-level gymnast. It felt less like a luxury resort and more like constantly walking on eggshells. At the end of the day, this place is surviving on its name alone. The experience does not match the hype, the cost, or the expectations they set. We’ve traveled to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica, and would choose any of those destinations over this without a second thought. Save your money. This is not the Atlantis people remember—it’s overcrowded, overpriced, and clearly going downhill

Overall good experience

Overall, our experience was good, but a few improvements could have made our trip more enjoyable. A smoother check-in process with better communication about room readiness would have helped, especially since we were traveling with a young child after a long journey. Improved cleanliness upon arrival would also make a stronger first impression, and quicker response times for service requests would be appreciated. Additionally, ensuring food freshness during transition periods at the restaurant is very important. These are issues that should not happen, especially considering the prices being charged.
