The Slate is no ordinary beachside resort of thatched-roof cabanas – in its secluded location against a backdrop of dense rainforest, it crosses into the territory of cutting-edge design hotel, and the juxtaposition of nature and industry is alluring. The inspiration for The Slate came from owner Wichit Na-Ranong, whose ancestors led the country’s development through the tin mining industry. Na-Ranong pays tribute to “black gold” through sleek architecture and dark color motifs punctuated by objets d’art. Restaurants Rivet and Rebar, led by chef Fabrizio Crocetta, serve up some of Thailand’s most innovative and eclectic fare.

Our second visit to the most beautiful and special hotel where every little detail is taken care of from check in til check out. After 2 very long flights the short journey from the airport to the Slate is very welcome. Arriving hot and tired we were greeted with a beautiful and tranquil reception and the whole check in procedure is fast and efficient and makes you immediately feel relaxed and taken care of. Our room was a Pearl bed suite in block M inbetween the 2 beautiful adults only pools. Our room was huge with 2 balconies, a huge bathroom and dressing room and a bath on one of the balconies. Every little detail is taken care of and I particularly appreciated the sustainability measures the hotel have implemented. All the toiletries are in recycled metal containers and water is provided in glass bottles. I also loved that each pool supplied flavoured drinking water so that you don't have to carry bottles of water. We used most of the eating and drinking facilities and enjoyed all. Also appreciated that each bar runs different happy hours. Breakfast was amazing and catered for all tastes with many different options. We also ate at the Black Ginger which was a truly amazing experience which I would highly recommend. Location of the hotel is perfect at 15mins from Phuket airport on the quiet and beautiful Naiyang beach which also has plenty of eating and drinking options. All the hotel staff are exceptional and all go the extra mile to ensure your stay is truly memorable. We had an amazing week's stay and loved every minute and would love to return again.

Stunning hotel and gorgeous beach. The service was amazing from the moment we stepped into reception, with a beautiful corsage, and greeting from the General Manager. The room was fantastic, and the grounds are like a maze of dreams. The pools are spectacular, and the breakfast was everything you could think of. We utilised the free bikes and cycled to the local temples which we may have missed if the Bike hire chaps hadn't suggested it. Nai Yang beach is so lovely with plenty of street food vendors and bars and restaurants. An absolutely unforgettable stay. Thank you

We had a wonderful stay, the room was gorgeous & all staff were amazing & went over & above to help with anything we needed. The food was delicious & we particularly enjoyed Black Ginger which was such a gorgeous set up & ambience! The pool areas were just gorgeous particularly the infinity pool so peaceful & surroundings were lovely. Would definitely recommend this hotel & would come again.

Lovely hotel, amazing staff, superb breakfast, very comfortable bed. Very close to cafes, bars, and laundry facilities. The only negatives I encountered were my private pool villa didn't have a rail to get in and out of the pool, and the lightning in my villa was quite dark. The positives were excellent staff, always smiling, and very helpful indeed, gardens were just lovely, and the hotel was very quiet even though there were quite a few guests. The drinks were always lovely and cold and the food in the Tin Mine was indeed delicious. I would return again without any hesitations.

Okay, this hotel both blew us away and slightly underwhelmed us at the same time. I'll list the pros and cons to help. We stayed 3 nights as a family if 5 in February. Pros We chose the One Bedroom Pool Villa- it was amazing! Huge! We've stayed all over the world in some very luxury destinations. The size and layout of this place blew us away. Pool was massive. Bedrooms stunning. Massage room, steam room, sauna, daily afternoon tea, complimentary laundry, champagne... lots of luxury extras. We were very impressed. Great value for the price we paid and plenty big enough for 5 of us. The villa Butler- Ei. She was fantastic. Worked so hard day and night. Even spent the afternoon at the medical centre with us helping translate to the doctors when my son cut he is head and needed stitches. A credit to the resort. As are the housekeeping team, the kids club staff, the fitness staff and the florist. The staff here are all very friendly and really care. Check in and check out. We a were able to get into our villa early and we were given a courtesy room after check out so we could shower.. before our night flight. No extra charge for these. The activities- I've never stayed anywhere with so much to do. Both children's and adult activities are in abundance. Most free or very good value if not. Literally impossible to get bored. Kids club were amazing with my son. The floristry course was incredible for my teenage daughters. Could have stayed weeks and filled our days with fun activities. Thai boxing, cookery classes, archery, paddles boards, guided bike rides, sound baths... the list was endless and delivered to a very high standard. Cons I think the staff are run off their feet. Breakfast on the first day was hectic, we waited ages for a table. In the buffet glasses had run out, juices had run out. Even after we had been to the buffet we sat waiting for cutlery to arrive at our table for a further 10 minutes. Our food was completely cold by them. We had finished eating by the time our coffees finally arrived. The food just didn't look to be the same standard as most other 5 star hotels. The next day we ordered breakfast in our villa, more pleasant but a few things were incorrect... Third morning we went back to the buffet breakfast but at 8.30am this time and the experience was lots better but still not as premium as other places we have stayed. We had lunch on our last day in the underground restaurant. Service was slow and quality okay but better food outside the resort. Would say it's not worth it to pay inflated prices and eat inside the resort. Plenty of authentic Thai restaurants in walking distance. Never felt like anyone was incapable, just that they were trying to do too much. I do know the hotel was fully booked when we were there so our experience could have been very different in low season. The grounds and pools. Lovely, quite pretty and well kept but not quite up to the same 5 star standard of other hotels we've visited. Lacking that luxury feel. The beach. There's some cute stalls and nice restaurants very near. Somewhere to do laundry, nail salons, pharmacy, juice stalls... everything you could need in walking distance. However this is (sadly like most of Phuket now) quite a busy and a little bit messy beach. I don't say this to criticise, just to warn that it's not a tranquil beach resort vibe. We had been in Khao Lak the week before and the contrast was quite a shock. I would say if you can push the budget and get a villa here then it's really worth it. If you have young kids and want to keep them entertained also could be a great hotel for you. Just not quite as luxury as I expected so keep that in mind. I hope this helps.
