In the Mexican Caribbean exists a luxe sanctuary called Banyan Tree Mayakoba. This other worldly paradise harmoniously blends superb luxury with its lush natural surroundings, all on the Riviera Maya coast. The Mayakoba development area provides a sense of seclusion and quiet respite along with what is normally considered on of the world's most popular stretches of shore. This, combined with the tradition and reputation of Banyan Tree and its Eastern-inspired elegance, makes for an unparalleled retreat. Accommodations are set in private pool villas, each remarkably decorated with handcrafted Mayan furnishings, and outfitted with ultra modern amenities, giving you the best of both worlds. The freestanding villas are ultra spacious in layout, and boast individual landscaped gardens, private outdoor terraces, floor-to-ceiling windows, outdoor bathtubs, and sparkling private infinity pools.

We stayed at the Bliss Pool Villa 404, and while we had a good time, several missteps made this resort feel less than luxurious. The villa includes a full-size pool. On the first day, we requested that the pool be cleaned of debris (leaves, bugs, etc.) We were told someone would come, but they never did. It took three days and many repeated requests to finally get someone to come and clean the pool. If your villa comes with a pool, having someone clean it daily shouldn't be a big ask. Also, the pool had missing and loose tiles that were on the bottom of the pool, creating an unsafe environment if you weren't wearing pool shoes. Parents traveling with children should be aware that wildlife will be front and center in the villa. We saw iguanas, snakes, and a coati that had a drink from our pool. Do not leave doors open to your villa, or something might sneak in! The outside patio furniture was worn and ripped, but housekeeping was kind enough to cover it with a towel. There was also a leftover slipper from a previous guest under the cabana. Food: The food is ridiculously overpriced for what you're getting. We paid $350 for two people at the Thai restaurant Saffron. While the food was good, it was not $350 good. We spent over $1500 for a 5 night/6 day stay. Also, there are no prices listed in the room for the mini-bar, so you are left guessing if the M&Ms you've eaten will cost you $50. On the fourth day, the TV in the villa started having issues with the picture, with lines throughout the screen, and periodically turning off. We reported the issue to the lobby, and they sent someone four hours later to fix it. After looking at the TV, the man told us he needed to make a phone call and left. Five hours later, at 9:30 PM, we received a call that they wanted to come and swap the TV out for a working one. By that time, we were already in bed and declined. Housekeeping: Generally, we didn't have any housekeeping issues other than receiving a call for turndown service at 9:30 PM, which was too late for us. Lastly, there is an outside tub that looks great, but it's not practical. When I went to fill it up, there were so many dead bugs that I was turned off immediately and changed my mind. Also, there was brown water that came out of the tub's faucet, which was visually unappealing. Housekeeping should clean the tub daily so it can be used. Although there were several issues, we did not let it ruin our trip, but we won't be coming back, and you should book with caution. This is not a five-star resort, maybe when it opened, but the wear and tear and lack of customer service are showing.

This was perhaps the finest resort I have ever stayed at. Everything was first-rate, but especially the architecture and grounds, as well as the staff courtesy and hospitality. Our extended family stayed there and all were in love with the place.

We just returned from a week at Banyan Tree Mayakoba, and while the property is undeniably stunning, it’s the people who made this trip truly unforgettable. First, a huge shoutout to Alberto and Angel—the Batman and Robin of our vacation. Communicating through the WhatsApp concierge was seamless, and every message—whether about dinner reservations, tennis or snorkeling, the Barcelona fútbol match, or even handling a tricky poolside situation—was answered within minutes. Their responsiveness and warmth set the tone for an incredible stay. Juan at Sur Beach Club welcomed us daily like family. His attentiveness made us feel completely cared for—and his cocktails? Absolutely phenomenal. We spent most days sunbathing at Sur and evenings dining at Sands, where Oscar helped us select and grill our own freshly caught fish. We kayaked across the lagoon with Lizzette, witnessed a Mayan ceremony at the on-property cenote, stayed still as monarch butterflies landed on our heads, and enjoyed ceviche and aguas frescas at El Pueblito—all while zipping around on the resort’s complimentary bikes. Throughout our stay, team members like Alan, the director for Sands and Sur, were incredibly attentive and quick to resolve any hiccups, making sure we stayed firmly in vacation mode. We also got to meet even more of the amazing staff during a lively appreciation night at La Copa, where we had the chance to sample delicious signature dishes from each restaurant—a perfect way to experience the heart and flavor of Banyan Tree’s culinary team. And then there’s Andrea. From our very first exchange, she understood how meaningful this trip was—we were celebrating our son’s high school graduation. She helped us secure hard-to-get reservations at Zapote Bar, Cello, the Latin Beach BBQ, Sands, and Agave Azul, and went above and beyond to arrange a celebration surprise for our son in our room that brought me to tears. Her kindness and attention to detail made our stay truly unforgettable. Banyan Tree is breathtaking, but what makes it one of a kind is the staff. You may come across a few reviews that are less than glowing, but from our perspective, this experience exceeded every expectation. Sometimes, the extraordinary gets overlooked when luxury is defined too narrowly. But here, the magic is in the human touch, the thoughtful details, and the care behind every interaction. We can’t wait to return. Mil gracias a todo el equipo de Mayakoba!
