Thompson Playa del Carmen Main House

This was our third stay at Hyatt Centric Playa del Carmen and once again it was fantastic. The C-Grill breakfast was great, and we loved staying at the Beach House. We’ll definitely be back again!

We were a group of 4 from NYC, Javi took care of us with his hospitality, amazing service and super friendly demeanor 🙂. Give that guy a raise! Due to him we celebrated the New Years at Centric down town and it was an unforgettable vibe!

Wonderful location in downtown Playa Del Carmen! We preferred the back of the hotel, which is much quieter than the front also with great views and access to all the wonderful amenities. Rooftop pool is pretty cool and the breakfast is excellent! Awesome Staff, always willing to help. This is our second day and we’re happy to return again in the future.

What a great stay! And the service was exceptional, especially Giovanni ! He was my spanish tutor :) lol. I will absolutely be coming back.

First, let me state that I stayed for five nights at the downtown hotel using free night award certificates. I do not have any opinion regarding beach house as I did not stay there. First observation is that using a free night award or points reservations with Hyatt will result in getting one of the worst rooms they have available for paying customers... I have also found that to be true with Marriott and Hilton. You're for sure going to get the parking lot view or the back alley garbage bin view or the rooftop of the next building view... It's not going to be one of their best rooms that would be given out to a paying customer. I accept that. Hyatt Centric Playa del Carmen, formerly a Thompson property, is getting a bit long in the tooth. Some parts of the hotel appeared to have been refurbished recently, but other parts, in particular, the hallways, needs some maintenance. I personally witnessed a hotel guest trip over a floor tile that was low and the edges were chipped out causing a tripping hazard as she approached the elevator on the first floor. Because I have already gotten into a long review, I will abbreviate the remaining portion of this review and give my letter grades: A - E, with a being the best. Umi Kitchen gets a C for the FOOD. Very average at best. Cold potatoes every morning at breakfast. Chuc and Yaz get an A+ for excellent service and camaraderie. Chuc was my guy at breakfast and Yaz provided service at the pool throughout the afternoon. DRINKS at the pool and or at the bar gets an A from me. Solid. POOL gets an A...it's a block long, clean and refreshing. However, the swim up bar or in pool bar seating gets a C. There were only three "swim up bar seats" and they were fashioned in the form of swings. Actually a bit unsafe due to their proximity to the jacuzzi located behind the swings. The jacuzzi in the pool did not appear to be working. STANDARD ROOM gets a B. The sofa is very low causing me to have to pull in a chair from the patio to sit on to watch TV in the room. The bed was just okay. There's a lot of wasted space in the room as it is not well furnished. The nightstand had a USB A outlet that did not work and the phone in the room also did not work which kept me from being able to utilize room service. I had to go up to the rooftop (Umi Kitchen) and make a to-go order in person. Not ideal. LOCATION gets an A: walking distance to pretty much everything in Playa del Carmen. No complaints on that front. Yes, some of the rooms are pretty noisy due to the party atmosphere on the streets surrounding the hotel, but I found it to be manageable with the ear plugs provided by the hotel. STAFF gets an A overall. Most of the staff were excellent and friendly. I will not let the one disinterested staff person, whom I shall not name, poison my overall opinion of the staff. OVERALL RATING of HYATT CENTRIC PDC: B+. I would return to this property, but I would eat more of my meals at surrounding restaurants and I would pay for the room instead of using points so that I could complain if I got one of these poorly located rooms.
