Disappointing-Not a True 5 Star Luxury Resort

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 hours ago

I just spent 5 nights at Atelier as an Inspira guest for a birthday trip & truly regret my decision to stay here. I was fooled by the unexplainably great reviews on TripAdvisor, Google, Reddit, and other luxury travel pages & I'm writing this review so other people don't fall for the trap. But don't just take my word for it —filter for all the other 1-3-star reviews — they are accurate & I only wish I had read them too before booking my stay. This was by far my WORST experience ever in Mexico. I've stayed at a few different all-inclusives here, and all were significantly better than Atelier --Impressions Isla Mujeres (2023); Breathless (2017); Secrets Akumal (2015). TLDR: RUN FAR AWAY FROM THIS RESORT. If you're used to luxury 5-star travel/all-inclusives, you will be SORELY disappointed staying here. ____________________________________ Service: The service was terrible from the start, including check-in. I was not met with welcoming energy at all. The woman checking me in acted like I was bothering her by even being there, and genuinely seemed to hate her job. In the Inspira check-in lounge, there's a small food buffet and a bar, but no one offered me anything or even mentioned that I could help myself to the food. After check-in, I was handed off to my butler. You're assigned two (one for the morning/day shift and one for the evening). My butlers were truly useless the entire trip. At check-in, the only thing my butler did was add me on WhatsApp. She didn't give me a walk-through of the property, explain how to get between the buildings, offer helpful tips or recommendations, or do anything extra. She literally added me to WhatsApp & that was it. There was no initiative to try to be attentive at all. I understand she was nearing the end of her shift, but since that was the case, I should've been passed off to a different butler for a proper check-in experience instead. This was not a good first impression, and the poor service only continued for the duration of my trip. Once settled into my room, I messaged my evening butler for two things: 1. To secure a reservation at the steakhouse on my birthday (ideal reservation times weren't available on the website), and 2. To book a spa appointment. When I first inquired about the steakhouse for my birthday, my butler tried to tell me there was nothing available. Once I pushed back and asked, "Do the restaurants not have some seats held aside for butlers to book for Inspira guests?" suddenly, he magically had an 8 pm reservation available for me. It's disappointing that I had to push him to secure a reservation, even after explaining it was for my birthday. For the spa appointment, he told me he would confirm it in the morning, but he never did, and he never booked it. Instead, I had to book the appointment myself. This truly left a bad taste in my mouth, and it became clear that I could not rely on the butler service for even the bare minimum. As the days progressed, my butlers never checked in for anything. I only received their daily generic mass-greeting text, along with a list of the resort's daily activities. In contrast, I saw other butlers constantly checking in on their guests, locating them at the pool/beach just to make sure everything was ok etc. My butlers never did any of this. Ultimately, it was fine because I was able to handle most things myself, but I was expecting white-glove service as an Inspira guest, and got nothing. Atelier consistently missed the mark when it came to service, even on the small details that truly make a hotel feel luxurious and special. Butler service only slightly got better after filling out a survey Atelier circulated mid-stay. I didn't give a positive review, and to their credit, they tried to make up for it & turn things around, but it still felt like too little too late. Nonetheless, I appreciated the flowers sent to my room, as well as the rose petal drawn bath for turn-down service, but I shouldn't have to leave a negative review to get quality service during my stay. Aside from that, the service lacked in other ways too & many requests went ignored. For example, the A/C stopped working in my room, and I had to request help FIVE times (over the span of 2.5 days) before anyone came to fix it. This is simply unacceptable. One night, my butler even told me he would come check it out, but he never came. ______________________________________ Food: The food is mediocre at best and, at times, downright awful. If you're from a major city, you probably will not like the food. I say this as someone who truly is a foodie and have eaten at Michelin-starred restaurants across the world. As I mentioned earlier, I've also tried other five-star AI resorts in Riviera Maya/Cancun (Impressions Isla Mujeres, Secrets Akumal, and Breathless), and the food at those resorts was light-years better. Almost everything was served lukewarm or cold at Atelier. The Mediterranean restaurant was probably the worst of them all. The falafel was just embarrassing (I don't think you can even call that a falafel), the salad was weirdly really salty, the sea bass was covered in an unpleasant super-sweet sauce, the filet was tough and dry, and the dessert was inedible. The Italian restaurant wasn't great either. The pastas were not good & the pizzas were not much better. The mushroom soup was decent, though. The sushi rice was mushy at both Takeshi and Kopai, making the sushi unenjoyable. I actually didn't like a single dish at Kopai, which was a bummer because I was super excited to try it. We truthfully made better-tasting sushi in the sushi-making class than what I was served there. The steakhouse was okay, and definitely the best option available. Had really great service from OCTAVIO :) The best place for food is the breakfast buffet--freshly made, hot, plenty of options. Room service was decent the first few nights, but started to fall off towards the end of my stay (and I even received some expired condiments). We had to either pre- or post-game dinner in our room every night because the restaurants were so awful. On the last night, we didn't even want to go out to a restaurant because we were tired of the disappointments. However, we went out for speciality cocktails at several different places, and they were all pretty bad. __________________________________ Property/Rooms: The property is nice and modern, and the rooms are solid as well. I had the Inspira two-story rooftop suite. The views are mid though, probably because the buildings are pushed back pretty far from the ocean (Atelier has an 18-hole golf course that monopolizes the oceanfront area). Housekeeping was great, especially Rosa Martinez for turn-down service. **Also, it takes a while to walk from your room to the beach/pool. I'm a fast walker, but it took 15-18 minutes to get from building 1 to Inspira Beach. ____________________________________ Beach: Pros- Beach cabanas for Inspira guests were nice and easy to secure before 10am. This is the one area where I think the Inspira upgrade paid off — we had far more beach chairs/cabanas available than the other guests. The drink service was also great. SHOUTOUT TO GABRIELLA. She was the best and provided amazing service every day (which was nice considering service lacked almost everywhere else). The beach would have been nice, but it was covered with seaweed/sargassum & Atelier made no effort to clean it up. I was at the beach every morning until evening, and I never saw staff even attempt to rake or scoop up the seaweed. It wasn't an unmanageable amount and could've easily been removed, but they didn't, and it made the beach area and water kinda gross. At every other resort I've stayed at, I've witnessed seaweed cleanup. It was truly baffling that Atelier made no attempts to upkeep the beach in the same way they do the pools. _______________________________ Spa: The spa was actually great. It's the sole reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1. I loved my experience there, particularly the hydrotherapy circuit. If you're an Inspira guest, I recommend at least taking advantage of the complimentary hydrotherapy (even if you don't book a massage). My guide through the circuit was lovely, as was my massage therapist. _______________________ Activities: Pros: Jonathan and Maria were great at leading the activities. I enjoyed the bike tour and sushi-making class. Cons: Atelier could improve on the availability and quality of activities (especially in the evening). In the evening, there isn't much to do other than the late-night show. By the last night, I was bored. ___________________________ Convention Center: Avoid booking here if there's a work conference happening. From my experience, the conference attendees are rowdy, obnoxious, and disrespectful. The resort also seems to cater to them over others. At dinner at Kopai, my waiter was also serving a conference group. He attended to their every need, but completely neglected my table. I couldn't even get him to stop for a water refill. __________________________________ Sales Presentation: Many people have mentioned the high-pressure sales tactics to attend the presentation, but that wasn't an issue for me. I firmly & quickly said no at check-in & wasn't approached about it for the duration of my trip.

This was our third stay at Atelier in an Inspira suite! The food, drinks, views and staff are amazing! Be sure and ask for butlers, Rodolfo y Yareni ☺️. We had a wonderful time and can’t wait to return!

Amazing Atelier Trip #4

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 18 hours ago

Our stay at Atelier Playa Mujeres continues to exceed every expectation—this was our 4th trip, and it somehow gets better every single time. We became members halfway through our 2nd visit, and it was hands down one of the best decisions we’ve made. From the very beginning, everything was seamless. Our airport transfer with Blue Trippers was smooth, professional, and stress-free. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with cocktails and greeted by our butlers, Brandon and Pingting—and once again, they were absolutely incredible. This was our third time with them, and we will request them every single visit moving forward. Their level of attentiveness and communication is unmatched. They stayed in constant contact with us through WhatsApp, which made everything so easy. I tend to ask a lot of questions and change things frequently, and having them handle everything meant I didn’t have to stress about a single detail. They answered questions about renting golf clubs, explained the hydrotherapy experience at the spa, stocked our mini bar exactly how we wanted (Diet Coke, specific drinks, snacks), and even messaged us when the taco cart I love was out so we wouldn’t miss it. They truly go above and beyond—steaming my dresses each evening, refilling our ice buckets, taking photos of us before dinner, setting up a beautiful bubble bath with rose petals and wine, and surprising us with a fresh bouquet of flowers in our room. Every detail felt thoughtful and personalized. We also loved catching up with Marisol again—she’s always so kind and lovely to talk to. It’s those familiar faces that make Atelier feel like coming home. Our rooftop suite was stunning, and we absolutely love the infinity pool and the location of our room—everything is perfectly situated and makes getting around effortless. The rooftop infinity pool remains one of our favorite spots on the property. Ernesto was incredibly attentive, Javier made sure we were always comfortable (adjusting towels and umbrellas so I could stay in the sun while my husband relaxed in the shade), and Danny (Daniel) was always smiling and on top of everything, even suggesting a delicious passion fruit and hibiscus drink. Now, the cocktails—this deserves its own moment. Alberto, Irving, Rodolfo, and David at Bar de la Calle are truly the backbone of the cocktail program at Atelier. Not only are their drinks consistently incredible, but they take the time to get to know what you like and create cocktails based on your preferences. They were making us custom tiki-style drinks that were some of the best we’ve ever had. You could honestly sit there all night just watching them—they turn the bar into a full experience. It’s not just drinks, it’s a show and a performance. Their energy, creativity, and attention to detail are unmatched. Everything about it was amazing, and we absolutely love them! We also had the pleasure of meeting Gabriel, the manager, and it was so refreshing to see leadership that is present and engaged. Taking the time to talk with us really stood out, and we’re excited to see all the great things ahead. We made sure to take advantage of more experiences this trip as well—I did both the painting class and the clay class, which were so fun and such a great addition to the stay. We also golfed and had an amazing time. Pro tip: bring a Mastercard or Visa, as they don’t accept Amex. And for the ladies—make sure to wear a collared shirt and skip the jean skirt (lesson learned on my end 😅). I’ll definitely be more prepared next time! Atelier isn’t just a resort—it’s an experience built around incredible people, thoughtful details, and consistency that keeps us coming back again and again. We already can’t wait for trip #5

Inspira experience and service

What an amazing experience. Our Inspira "butlers" were beyond amazing. As were the rest of the staff at the restaurants, pools, accommodations, and experiences. What a beautiful trip.

Just relax and enjoy!

If luxury had a heartbeat, it would sound exactly like Atelier… and it would probably be whispering your name while handing you a perfectly chilled drink. From the moment we arrived, it felt less like check in and more like being welcomed into some secret, sun soaked sanctuary where every detail had been thoughtfully orchestrated just for us. And then… the magic makers appeared. Rodolfo and Yareni. I am convinced they are not human but highly trained hospitality wizards. They didn’t just anticipate needs, they predicted them. Ice appeared before we realized we needed it. Reservations were handled with effortless grace. Every interaction felt personal, warm, and genuinely joyful. They made us feel like the most important guests in the entire resort!. And then there is the pool and beach crew… where do I even begin? Carlos, Christopher, Jesus, and Evol turned relaxation into an art form. Drinks arrived at the exact moment you started thinking about one. Chairs were magically adjusted, towels refreshed, vibes curated to perfection. They brought energy without ever being intrusive, fun without ever being forced. Every laugh, every check in, every small detail added up to an experience that felt effortless and elevated all at once. This team didn’t just provide service. They created an atmosphere. One where you could fully exhale, fully enjoy, and fully feel taken care of in a way that is rare and unforgettable. Atelier is stunning. The food is incredible. The setting is dreamlike. But it’s these people… these absolute rockstars of hospitality… who turn it into something extraordinary. We didn’t just visit we felt like honored guests. And we are already plotting our return.
