Poor Service and No Response for Honest Booking Mistake

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

We accidentally booked InterContinental Porto instead of InterContinental Lisbon, where we actually intended to stay — and did stay — for three nights. As soon as we realized the mistake, the Lisbon hotel team kindly contacted the Porto property on our behalf and advised us to proceed through Booking.com for cancellation or refund. Unfortunately, despite following the correct process, the InterContinental Porto team denied the refund request without any explanation. We never checked in or used the booking, yet they have refused to respond or assist. Multiple follow-ups were completely ignored. It’s truly disappointing and unacceptable for a 5-star hotel under the IHG group to treat genuine guests with such disregard. This wasn’t a last-minute cancellation — it was an honest error, and we acted immediately to resolve it in good faith. I expected much better service, transparency, and basic communication. I strongly urge future guests to be cautious when booking, and I hope the hotel management reconsiders how they treat guests in these situations.

Good location & stylish accommodation

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Very comfortable & stylish room with lovely tall windows overlooking the main square opposite with views stretching down to key buildings & statues. Sadly there were significant & very noisy works ongoing during our stay, digging for a new subway station, which blocked our view & provided very noisy background city noise (but not on a Sunday, thankfully). Other than that the hotel is very comfortable & situated in a great location for sightseeing, particularly for the stroll down to the water front (about 10mins downhill). The river front was our favourite area especially for people watching & port tasting. The hotel provides a good breakfast with tasty choices.

Upscale lodging in Porto

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

The room was nicely appointed with a view directly down the plaza. Staff was very welcoming and helpful. The location is great for walking and shopping. In the near-term some may find the metro construction out front to be a distraction and eyesore. Lot’s of tourists on the street out front. We did not get to eat there but we found the lobby bar to have a great atmosphere and a talented Bartender.

Great place to stay in Porto!

The Intercontinental Hotel is located right in the heart of Porto with most attractions within walking distance from the hotel. Staff was very helpful and the rooms were beautiful.

Terrible customer service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Had a lovely stay here, the hotel was lovely the staff at check in were very nice and friendly however there were a few issues. Firstly the air con in the room did not work very well, we found the room very hot. On one of the days we got breakfast, a buffet breakfast and a full English, but we were charged for 2 buffet breakfasts and 1 English, we told the staff and they were like just tell reception when checking out. My partner on the last day had lunch in the bar before we checked out and we were charged double the price for fish and chips, we explained this and the additional charge for breakfast at check out and the receptionist said I will have to check with my manager can you come back. We came back a few hours later and she said no problem they would refund me. However that was not the case, after numerous emails and many, many calls of me chasing them for the refund , and them always promising to call back or reply to my email they didn’t. After about 3 weeks of getting in touch with them constantly they finally issued a refund. This is terrible customer service and definitely not 5 star. I should not of had to follow up with them for a mistake they made plus they said they would action it when we checked out but they did not. This hotel really needs to work on their customer service as I found the whole experience very frustrating.
