With a historic city center designated a UNESO World Heritage Site, and robust cultural pride and charm, the city of Porto, Portugal is a quintessential taste of Europe. Housed in a former palace dedicated as a national monument, the luxurious Pousada do Porto, Palácio do Freixo is situated on the banks of the Douro River, and provides a splendid respite during your time in town. Beautiful baroque construction, originally designed by renowned Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, stands fully restored and refurbished as a modern day testament to the hotel's storied and regal past. Juxtaposed to the palace's grand and time-honored exterior, yet blended seamlessly in harmony, guest rooms are decidedly contemporary in style. Sleek lines, minimalist décor, and modern amenities grace the 87 total rooms and suites, which all include air conditioning, complimentary Internet access, LCD satellite televisions, and mini bars. Views peer out over the scenic river and palace grounds, offering a private sanctuary in which to unwind and relax.

Absolutely fantastic restaurant, all local (to Portugal) produce, fresh and expertly prepared by the chef. Staff were engaging, attentive and looked to enjoy their work. Expert advice on wines and port. So good we were back 2 days later. The hotel is awesome, great mix of baroque and modern, spacious rooms and a choice of 2 pools, neither overly busy Best of all was the excellent bar team and in particular Francisco, great cocktail maker and really engaging with us and other customers, as did the rest of the team over the 8 days we stayed. One of the best holidays we’ve had and certainly amongst the best service, thank you all!

Such a beautiful building and fabulous and serene location after the bustle of Porto town. Rooms a little dowdy in colour but very comfortable and spacious. Ours had a wonderful view over the river which was delightful. Reception staff a little unfriendly and lacking in helpfulness. However Ines from guest relations made up for it with her wonderful smile, helpful restaurant recommendations and the final flourish - a surprise bottle of bubbly and some little sweet treats to celebrate our wedding anniversary when we came back from dinner. The food was excellent and the pool bar / bar /restaurant staff were delightful. The spa changing rooms which reception direct you to if you arrive early or departing late are very small and very hot so not conducive to showering before/ after a travelling day. Also we were told on booking that there was a regular shuttle between the hotel and the city centre, reception advised it only ran at 10 am and 6 pm and the hotel info in our room said it was only available by pre booking. However Ubers are frequent and cheap so it didn’t cause a problem but may be the hotel need to clarify their information. All said we had an amazing 3 day break and loved coming back to the soothing peace of the Palácio after a hot and busy day amongst the crowds of Porto.

The team at the hotel are simply amazing. Nothing at all is too much trouble for them. From the initial check in being offered a welcome drink, queries about visits, to being pampered in the spa. The gym is small but perfectly equipped for that workout to help keep the metabolism going for all the amazing food the hotel and Porto has to offer. A special shout out to Fabio who recommend 5 different restaurants and all were amazing. Visited 18-27 May climate was perfect. Thank you for making our stay that extra special.

Everything was absolutely lovely, especially our dining experience. The dinner was of excellent quality and the service was top notch...we were treated like royalty by Sebastiao, the dining room host and Pedro our evening waiter. The food, atmosphere, and service makes this place so special with the most stunning views of the Doru River!! We are sad to leave but hope to return next year!!
