With a historic city center designated a UNESO World Heritage Site, and robust cultural pride and charm, the city of Porto, Portugal is a quintessential taste of Europe. Housed in a former palace dedicated as a national monument, the luxurious Pousada do Porto, Palácio do Freixo is situated on the banks of the Douro River, and provides a splendid respite during your time in town. Beautiful baroque construction, originally designed by renowned Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, stands fully restored and refurbished as a modern day testament to the hotel's storied and regal past. Juxtaposed to the palace's grand and time-honored exterior, yet blended seamlessly in harmony, guest rooms are decidedly contemporary in style. Sleek lines, minimalist décor, and modern amenities grace the 87 total rooms and suites, which all include air conditioning, complimentary Internet access, LCD satellite televisions, and mini bars. Views peer out over the scenic river and palace grounds, offering a private sanctuary in which to unwind and relax.

The hotel has incredible natural beauty, although it is chopped up and very difficult to navigate. That said, the service was terrible. Breakfast, lunch and poolside the servers were slow, clueless and didn’t care. I asked three times for a drink, grew frustrated and walked to the bar myself, only to be frustrated again. This may sound like an arrogant American, but bring tipping back: people hustle and care more. These workers did neither, not even close. On top of all of this, our room air conditioner didn’t work. I didn’t even want to call for someone to look at it, I had no faith. Did I mention the beauty of the place?

Beautiful hotel, great food, great drinks and really good service when you get it. Life feels slow at this hotel and isn't as pristine as big international chains but there's a charm to it. The pool is stunning and the bed was one of the most comfortable I've stayed in. The turnover process was fantastic with really nice housekeeping touches. We loved our stay.

We stayed here for 2 nights in May 2026 as a part of a tour. We were in room 005, which had a nice view of the river and bridge. It has a king bed with a firm mattress, that was comfortable, and 2 pillows on each side that were too thick for me. There was limited counter space in the bathroom. There was a high step into the tub to shower with no grab bar. The bathroom has a toilet and a bidet. There is a door stop between the 2 (so the door does not slam into them, and I stepped on it a few times. I The carpet looks old and has some stains. The rooms are quiet. The common rooms in the main building are beautiful. Breakfast is good as there is a buffet plus several menu options. The property is a long walk (2.5 miles) along the river from Porto city center. There is a gym and an indoor pool and an outdoor pool. This is a nice property if you want to stay away from the crowds in Porto.
