With a historic city center designated a UNESO World Heritage Site, and robust cultural pride and charm, the city of Porto, Portugal is a quintessential taste of Europe. Housed in a former palace dedicated as a national monument, the luxurious Pousada do Porto, Palácio do Freixo is situated on the banks of the Douro River, and provides a splendid respite during your time in town. Beautiful baroque construction, originally designed by renowned Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, stands fully restored and refurbished as a modern day testament to the hotel's storied and regal past. Juxtaposed to the palace's grand and time-honored exterior, yet blended seamlessly in harmony, guest rooms are decidedly contemporary in style. Sleek lines, minimalist décor, and modern amenities grace the 87 total rooms and suites, which all include air conditioning, complimentary Internet access, LCD satellite televisions, and mini bars. Views peer out over the scenic river and palace grounds, offering a private sanctuary in which to unwind and relax.

This is a wonderful old palace that has been turned into an into a sumptuous hotel. River view is lovely and the gardens just top the venue off. Staff were incredibly helpful and polite - nothing was too much bother for them. If you want to step back in time, this is a place to stay.

We opted to stay outside of Porto because we had a car and didn't want to drive in the city. This hotel is easily accessible from the A20 with convenient parking and was just a short & inexpensive Uber ride into town. The Palacio is a beautiful building that houses the bar, restaurant, breakfast rooms and the sumptuous lobby/lounge area. Hotel rooms are more modern, in the adjoining building along with the inside pool and fitness/spa areas. Gardens and outside pool and bar area would be nice in warmer weather. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable with a river view. Bed was large and comfortable. In November it was too cool to use the outdoor pool, but I used the indoor pool one day and it was a nice way to unwind after a day of sightseeing. No problems with internet, with easy access throughout. The public spaces are elegantly appointed and very nice to linger in. Breakfasts were excellent with many food options, all of high quality , served in most pleasant surroundings. Service was attentive & welcoming and staff could not have been better. We had similar experiences at the bar and restaurant and were glad to have the option to relax and dine in such a fine and convenient establishment. All staff were most helpful and this only added to our most pleasant stay . We would heartily recommend this to anyone that doesn't mind staying outside of the city center and have already mentioned it to friends who are traveling to Porto in 2026.

At first, the hotel seems truly charming — a beautiful old building with modern comforts and lots of character. I really wanted to love it. Unfortunately, the hotel turns into a party venue almost every evening. The noise from weddings and other private events makes it impossible to relax, with loud music blasting from the late afternoon until well into the night. These parties take place right inside the hotel, often in the ballroom just below the rooms or in the garden — closed off to hotel guests — and when they finally end (around 2 a.m., if you’re lucky), noisy revellers who aren’t even staying there roam the corridors laughing and talking loudly. The staff is dismissive and clearly tired of hearing complaints about the noise. It feels like management cares far more about private events than about their hotel guests. It’s a real shame — this could be a wonderful place, but they should not open the hotel to the public while hosting private parties. Until that changes, it’s impossible to enjoy a stay here.

Absolutely amazing dinner! We had Maria and Sebastian as our servers and they were fantastic! Even as a vegan, the food was spectacular!
