Located in a building that, once upon a time, was head office for the National Bank of Canada, Hotel 71 is a stunning example of 19th century neo-classic architecture. The lobby is a welcome breath of modernity, with limestone walls and a walnut ceiling. The simple and elegant design glows in the sunlight that beams through the massive windows found in each room, some situated perfectly to offer views of the St. Lawrence and the city’s Old Port. All rooms are furnished with a spacious work desk, a DVD surround sound system and wireless internet access. The "Il Matto" Italian restaurant is consistently ranked amongst the best in the city.

I booked and prepaid my stay via Trip Advisor. Upon check-in at Hotel 71 I was asked for a credit card for a $145 "hold fee". I asked what was being held if I prepaid for the room, and I received a vague answer. Overhearing others during their check-in this question was consistently asked. Now, I arrived 1.5 hours ahead of 3 pm check-in time, and I provided the Concierge my Rewards Number. I noticed the Concierge and Manager are bi-lingual so asking question in English was possible. The Concierge asked me if I wanted to check-in early, so I accepted that option by saying yes and oui. While waiting I was not given an estimated wait time, not offered water, not shown around nor briefed on the hotel's amenities. I thought I was being processed for early check-in but I ended up sitting in the lobby the entire time. Granted, any 4 or 5 star hotel I have ever stayed at -- especially being a rewards member -- I have never been ignored or forgotten about while sitting in the lobby. It is small lobby area so there is no real reason for this. A couple arrived around 2:50 pm so I lined up behind them. I listened to all of the information provided in English to the couple, and watched them proceed to the elevators. I was next in line to speak with the Concierge but the Manager appeared to speak to me. He said he had to go see if my room was ready. About 5 minutes later it sound as though he called down to the Concierge and soon thereafter I was given a room assignment. I was not provided any information I heard given to others checked in ahead of me. I could have asked but after sitting in the lobby 1.5 hours why should I if it is their job to make me feel welcomed? It's called Hospitality 101. I just smiled, accepted my room key, and went to my room. Once in my room, I looked around and noted if anything was odd so as to avoid them unnecessarily charging my card post-stay. I normally would not do this but I have a feeling I am not welcomed here. Unfortunately when you pre-pay for a room you just have to make the best of an unusual situation. As for the room, it was comfortable by 3-star standards but not by 4-star standards. During my stay, I chose to only sleep at the hotel and to spend my money elsewhere for food, cocktails, etc. Upon check out I was not asked if I enjoyed my stay nor if I needed a taxi. Again, I just smiled and wished them a nice day as I left the hotel. To me, this is a 3-star hotel with minimum servicing masquerading as 4-star hotel. When I return to Quebec I will not stay here nor recommend it to others.

What a great hotel! It is conveniently located in the Old Town, but on a very quiet street away from the bustle of the crowd. The hotel staff, especially those at the front desk, were very helpful. The room was spacious. clean and worth the money we paid. If we go back to Quebec City, we will definitely stay at Hotel 71!

As awesome as Old Quebec City is and it’s worth a 2nd visit. However, I would drive the 7 hours again to stay at this amazing Hotel!! The late afternoon drinks in lobby, the valet and entire hotel staff are on top of their game!! The rooms are clean, beds are super comfortable, the bathrooms-showers are also luxurious. The staff will go the extra mile. This is all in addition to the hotel’s perfect location!!!!!!

We checked in for 2 nights this past week with 2 other couples . From the time we drove up we were treated so well , starting with the door man Pierre , who had us at the reception immediately and had our bags to our rooms within minutes along with all sorts of helpful information. It’s a clean modern space with lots of surprises , complimentary champagne and snacks in the afternoon, a beautiful breakfast that you can choose to enjoy and many little spaces to sit with a coffee or friends . We also ordered pizza from the restaurant IL Matto and it was fabulous . The hotel is in a perfect location, you can explore the city on foot and as well walk to lots of restaurants . It’s a quiet , lovely hotel , I would definitely return .
