About the Hotel

Located in a building that, once upon a time, was head office for the National Bank of Canada, Hotel 71 is a stunning example of 19th century neo-classic architecture. The lobby is a welcome breath of modernity, with limestone walls and a walnut ceiling. The simple and elegant design glows in the sunlight that beams through the massive windows found in each room, some situated perfectly to offer views of the St. Lawrence and the city’s Old Port. All rooms are furnished with a spacious work desk, a DVD surround sound system and wireless internet access. The "Il Matto" Italian restaurant is consistently ranked amongst the best in the city.

Great location, nice room, appalling response to dirty bathroom

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

The good: The location is great, the hotel itself is nice, the front desk staff and valets are nice. The apartment is large with a large terrace, part of which has a nice view. The bad: Our bathroom was visibly dirty when we arrived; there was a brown mark (not a stain) on the toilet seat, and a shoeprint in the shower. We reported this right away and no one came to clean until I'd called the front desk twice and gone down there myself--three hours later. This was appalling. At that point the young woman at the front desk offered us free breakfast during our stay. We did go twice for a small bite, as the fruit was good, but the breakfast is so overpriced and limited we never would have gone otherwise. There were dead flies and crumbs in the corner of the kitchen that were never cleaned. Housekeeping came in the afternoon each day, usually right when we'd returned to the room to clean up for drinks and dinner. The first time they came in they did not replace the toilet paper roll, which we needed, so I had to track down another housekeeper on a lower floor to get one. We got room service the first night since we were so delayed from being unable to use our bathroom and shower, and no one came to collect the dirty dishes until the following afternoon, after I called the front desk. The location is great and the apartment is large with a large terrace. But, the kitchen did not have any cutlery, which we found odd and inconvenient. There's a lot of potential here, but I've never had a problem like this at another hotel in my extensive travel around the world and at a variety of accommodations. The food from Il Matto was good, but the minestrone soup had ham in it, which was not on the menu and I have never seen in my life. I'm a vegetarian, so this did not work for me. I filled out the hotel's automated survey, shared my concerns and asked that someone contact me. No one has. When we checked out the lovely young woman at the front desk was very nice and spoke to her supervisor, who was in a meeting. She said they were going to remove the valet parking and wine charges, which I appreciated. I was also told we could wait for the supervisor, and I said we couldn't as we needed to leave. I was then told she would contact me. I emailed the hotel several days ago asking for someone to contact me, and asking for a revised invoice, as I never received one with the correct charges. NO ONE HAS REPLIED AT ALL. On day one, someone should have been in the room within minutes to sanitize at least the bathroom, and we should have been offered a glass of wine while we waited downstairs. Given the way the situation was handled (a three-hour wait for someone to show up to clean a visibly disgusting bathroom), the hotel should have comped our room the first night. That's what I would have done. We are not high maintenance and we are not complainers, but this situation was appalling. If a guest says there's a brown mark on the toilet seat and a shoeprint in the shower, I'd think there would be some urgency in dealing with this. This room was not inexpensive, and I've seen far better customer service and general care at far less expensive inns and hotels. My dissatisfaction is much more about how this was handled than the original state of the bathroom.

Magic in Quebec City

This hotel will always be extra special because I got married here! My husband and I booked the Penthouse Suite and eloped on the balcony. It was absolutely perfect. The room was stunning. Spacious, spotless, and with a beautiful view and a spiral staircase to the top. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom had a TV that looked like a hologram in the wall-sooo cool! We could not believe the value. It was located right in the heart of town and so easy to walk to restaurants and cute little stores. Yet despite the great location, it was quiet and there was not any noise thorghout the night. And the staff were so, so sweet. The manager was one of our witnesses, and the concierge the other. The food at breakfast was delicious and there were many choices, both sweet and savory. And we had our wedding dinner at the Italian restaurant and it was so yummy. We eat a lot of Italian food so we know good stuff, and this was top notch. We will definitely return, but would plan to do so even if we had not gotten married at Hotel 71.

This was our second stay at this excellent boutique hotel in the old city. Quick walk to the upper and lower old city. Beautiful modern rooms. We stayed in a suite which we really liked. Hotel has continental breakfast for addition a fee. The automated wine bar in the lobby is always a hit.

Fantastic location!

The hotel is in fact a historical building in a fantastic location, within 15 minutes walk to the train station, a few minutes walking distance to Petit Champlain, and few minutes climbing to upper Quebec :) the hotel and our room were very clean with a great housekeeping. Our room on the highest floor had a good view to the river, a descent size with luxury toiletries, big bad and all necessary amenities. There is a free water station for drinking and a good Italian restaurant serving tasty dishes. There are few things to improve, notably the breakfast including the self service approach providing only one plate per person upon entering the breakfast room ( I have never seen this anywhere else being a frequent traveler)! The variety of food in the breakfast room also needs a big upgrade versus the price paid. I would also recommend the hotel personnel to be less indifferent to guests’s needs in general and also to clearly communicate with partner businesses like Booking.com on what extras to expect so that guests avoid unpleasant surprises upon checkout . Thank you

Quiet, relaxing and luxurious

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

My stay was exactly what I needed quiet & luxurious. The hotel was spotless with quiet corners to sip a coffee or just sit. From the moment I walked in I knew I would love Hotel 71. An immediate warm welcome with my room ready early. The added touches of soft lighting and classical music playing as I entered my room made me feel special. The rooms are understated luxury and beautifully designed. Most importantly everything is super clean. A wonderful experience from beginning to end. I highly recommend even a short stay at Hotel 71.
