Historic Indeed

This is a beautiful restored historic Hotel - all the charms of long ago! It is in the heart of Old Quito and perfect for walking and ambling around d the city. I found the staff at check in friendly and very welcoming, and soon I was escorted to my room. My room was spacious and comfortable, with high ceilings and a 'monster' bed! (and comfy) The bathroom large, with a walk in shower and plenty of vanity space. Breakfast in the lovely Dining room - lots to choose from and with the option of a menu for hot meals. Staff at breakfast were wonderful and I had some great chats. I did not eat dinner, but I enjoyed my evenings on the rooftop. The attentive staff on the rooftop made up for each very pleasant evening - the views from here are magic and especially when it's dark. Plenty of offers for a blanket and constantly checking to see if I was comfortable and not cold. A wonderful stay at this Hotel.....

Plenty Better Options Elsewhere!

A special holiday that was ruined by the false promises and lies made by the hotel sales and management team!! This stay was the climax of a 4-week holiday in Peru and Ecuador. As part of the booking process, we asked to have special arrangements made for a very special birthday. These were all confirmed by email and acknowledged by the hotel. As assurance, the day before, we made a specific visit to the Catering Manager and had confirmation that everything was in place. On the day itself, NOTHING had been arranged. A new crew was in service and they had no knowledge at all…if this was not disappointing and annoying, nothing else can be. It was absolutely unacceptable and the hotel was not able to do much beyond trying to please us with some sparkling wine and complimentary pies!! They can keep those to themselves!!! It’s a pit we had not read comments made by a fellow traveller in April. The individual had similar issues with catering and of course, the hotel response was that the feedback would be given to the catering crew. Obviously nothing was done. The hotel staff are great but the hotel management needs a kick or change out. They seem to think they are so exclusive that they don’t need to bother. There are plenty other options in the area at half the price. I would recommend staying elsewhere and simply visiting the hotel for tea. Quito has some super hotels in the area where you’ll feel significantly more special. Spend the money on other options. To the hotel…please don’t make promises that you cannot keep. Be honest with your customers. Don’t forget, they are paying for your existence.

Casa Gangotena, Quito - A must stop in the Historic District

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Historic, elegant hotel right in the heart of Quito’s Historic District. Our view was of the plaza. Great walking area with shops, old churches, parks and plazas. Really fun to walk around! Service was wonderful, very attentive and the restaurant was impeccable. I really loved the little bar with its dark wood interior and beautiful finishes. So comfy. Room was very spacious and we were given the same room the 3 times we visited! Beautiful bathroom! Thanks to Maria Emilia de Los Reyes from MetroJourneys for her expert assistance with our “Golden Triangle” trip! If you have not done this, DO IT. NOW. 😎

Excellent Place to Stay!! You can't go wrong with staying here!!

I (female) visited with two of my grown children. This was our first time in Ecuador, and it was amazing!! I want to start by saying the entire hotel staff was fantastic, from the room attendants to the concierge, we were always taken care of. Daniella, was the best, most amazing help throughout our stay. The rooms are very nice, beds are perfect, the noise was minimal, and breakfast was amazing!! We arrived late, so Daniella made sure we had dinner taken to our room when we checked in. She arranged a pickup at the airport. The next day, she arranged everything for us from tours to amazing food, a chocolate tasting, and at the hotel, we attended a cooking class. The hotel chef is so fantastic, and the food was super! We learned a lot about authentic Ecuadorian foods. We visited churches, museums, and had the opportunity to meet some of the nicest people ever! As far as safety goes (that was a concern to me before I arrived), we felt safe the entire time. They have great security at the hotel! Ubers are safe and fairly cheap. There are areas you need to be careful in around Quito, but it's the same for the United States. Just stick with Daniella, and she will take care of everything!! I was also concerned about altitude sickness before I arrived. For us, that wasn't an issue. We made sure to stay hydrated and took things at our own pace. I'm not sure if that's normal, but we had a great time!! You can get some medicine for altitude sickness, but I'm allergic to it (sulfa allergies), also, they have a tea you can drink if it becomes an issue. Thankfully, it never became an issue for us. I will say, my son, who is a geologist, was doing some research at one of the volcanoes, and he had to hike to a much higher altitude and experienced some problems. Mostly, he had to take a lot of breaks to catch his breath, but it wasn't too bad for him at that time either. I strongly encourage everyone to visit Quito and Casa Gangotena! From the people, to the staff, the views, the city, and the food, you'll have an amazing time!! I plan on visiting again soon, because there are still so many things I want to see. When I do this, it is the only place I will stay at!! On a side note, from my understanding, all of the certified tour guides take three years of college and study a wide variety of subjects such as ecology, astronomy, and history to become tour guides, so you will learn a lot!! Have fun!!
