Well located oasis with solid staff hospitality

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 15 hours ago

The facility is really an oasis that is close to Palm Desert and Palm Springs. Thankfully you don’t have to leave the premises to enjoy yourself. There is enough to do between the pools, the golf course and various food options. The fitness center is spacious and well equipped. The staff is very friendly, starting with James who was great at check in and later assisting when we needed assistance in the evenings. Cleaning staff was responsive delaying their cleaning when we needed a few moments before heading out. Also, attention to detail in daily cleaning is appreciated. So what’s not to like? The property feels a little dated and is probably due for a refresh. The parking situation with various gates between different sections is annoying. Solid 4.5 stars, not perfect but well executed.

I’m very pleased to recognize James the front desk supervisor. A true asset to the Westin Rancho Mirage team. Marlene went above and beyond to make our stay fantastic. And Christopher was a problem solver with class and dignity. All representing the hotel as is if it were their own. Thank you for a great stay!

I echo “Ryan B’s" review from 3 weeks ago. I stayed here one week ago. I have stayed here several times in the past and always loved it and thought it was a special place. The property is still very beautiful. The rooms are in 2 story buildings spread out over the property surrounded by lots of foliage and multiple pools. The rooms are spacious but any similarity to a real Westin is gone. A small hint as to the change in status is one I didn’t pick up on. I kept searching for the “Westin Mission Hills Resort and Spa”. The person at the hotel told me when the ownership changed and it became a franchise it is now called “Westin Rancho Mirage Resort and Spa" but you can still google the old name but what comes up is the Villas across from the hotel. Very confusing. I understand from speaking to someone at the hotel that it is now a franchise and not owned or run by Westin/Marriott. That may explain a lot of the condition issues. Overall the rooms and buildings are in need of an upgrade. Here are some of the condition items. The bathroom was spacious and the shower area looked like it had newer tile. However, the wallpaper was peeling and the sink area needed an upgrade. Two sinks was a plus! Nice table to put your things on. Good size closet. Towels were thin more like a Holiday Inn than Westin’s nice fluffy towels. Bedroom had 2 queen beds. Dresser old but ok. TV was ancient and got 40 channels. No free HBO, Netflix etc. Mattresses were comfortable but the bedding was definitely not Westin quality. The bottom sheet was flat and didn’t fit the mattress so it came undone and bunched up if you rolled over. The comforter was very very heavy not like the Westin comforter. The bed had a very thin throw type grey cover that was pilled and old. Pillows were ok but not like the Westin pillows. WiFi - slow. Old style outlets; not enough for todays laptops, phones, tablets etc. Room feels damp when air conditioning is running Old style Coffeemaker. Most hotels now have small Keurigs. Coffee bar was nice and had a mini fridge and storage space. Patio area very small with 2 old lawn chairs but the view of the 18th fairway, the palm trees and the mountains was great. Pool is now surrounded by fencing/gates which means LOTS of kids in the pool. Mother’s Day May 11, 2025 packed with kids. Wasn’t even a lounge chair left!! I think the plan here is to cater to families with small children and not adults golfing. Another clue is the large kids play area in the lobby with a bowling alley. No snack shop/ convenience store in the lobby anymore just a vending machine where you can buy a toothbrush or condoms. You could get a snack and drinks at the pool snack shop. The Starbucks is in a gift shop that has a few sundries and some clothes and gifts which is nice. It is open in the morning but closes when they feel they don’t have enough customers! GOLF - Golf is not run by the hotel anymore. It is run by another company. Person in the golf shop was very nice. Driving range closes at 200pm!!!!! Goose poop all over the putting greens and sidewalks. UGH…. Golf course did look in beautiful condition though! Restaurant way over-priced but I guess that is California pricing. I had a cup of tea and a bowl of oatmeal for $30. I didn’t get my $10 food and beverage benefit. Pool Snack/Drink Bar - I had a smoothie for $11.00. Spa keeps erratic hours. I tried to schedule a massage listed in the WESTIN brochure in my room only to learn “oh, we don’t do that’. I’m not sure there was anyone working in the spa except the receptionist. Staff at the hotel were all very friendly. Even the groundskeepers must have been told to greet everyone which was very nice. Didn't seem like the jitney service was still available to take you from your room to the pool area which can be a long walk depending on what building your room is in. I came expecting a Westin experience and this wasn’t it. However, the inconveniences above are a trade-off for a great location with beautiful grounds and a nice pool so I might come again. Now I know why I got such a great deal on the price. This hotel is a gem so I hope the new owners put some money into it and bring it back up to the old standards with a fully functioning golf course and spa. Be aware there is a $40 resort fee plus in my opinion a hidden $23 per day charge for parking. On check out the registration person was nice and removed parking fee after I asked about it not being on the bill under Total Costs which is now a federal law. Definitely worth it if you get a good room rate!

Mother’s Day weekend getaway

My stay at the hotel was exceptional, largely thanks to James, who greeted us with incredible warmth and friendliness at check-in. We arrived early and hoped to use the pool, and James went above and beyond by securing us a room ahead of schedule at no extra charge. His helpfulness and genuine care made us feel special from the moment we walked in. The entire experience was seamless and memorable, and James’ outstanding service truly set the tone for a fantastic stay. Highly recommend!

Not The Same Hotel We Remember!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

We recently stayed at The Westin Rancho Mirage, and while we have stayed here many times, mostly during Coachella, it has changed quite a bit over the last five years. I also believe it was taken over by a different management company and is no longer run by Marriott. I am also a Bonvoy Gold member. Let's begin with the positives. The grounds are still beautiful, the room is nice and perfectly suitable for a short stay, and the breakfast buffet was delicious. And, for Coachella, the shuttle was awesome and never too crowded. On the other hand, there are some major issues. The hotel, overall, is in dire need of updating. The rooms, while nice, are old and need to be modernized. The adult pool is falling apart--the tables, chairs, and pool were in disarray and dirty. You could see the rusting all around the pool. And, for it being Coachella, there was no effort at all to appeal to festival goers. There was no music--the bartender said the speakers were broken and are supposed to be fixed. They did have a DJ at the main pool, but that's is a whole different story that I will discuss now. The main pool is no longer the beautiful oasis it used to be as it has become overrun with children and seems more like a time share than a luxury resort. The addition of the "arcade/bowling alley" also makes the place more family friendly, which is fine as as that is clearly the target audience now. But, for those traveling without kids, it honestly cheapens the aesthetic, and combined with the pool, makes the entire thing feel like a Six Flags water park. And, when we were given the complimentary Happy Hour drinks, I had a completely different idea of what that was going to be like. Instead of going to a chill bar, it felt like we were at a children's birthday party, and the drinks were warm and cheap-tasting. Again, there were just kids running around everywhere, which felt weird, considering there were tables full of Bud Lights and cocktails. You can't really do both. Finally, considering the price we paid--$2,100 for three days (I understand that it's Coachella pricing), it definitely was not worth that amount. And, they did give us a late checkout till 2, but we wanted to stay till four, and they charged us an extra $20 an hour. Guess, Bonvoy can only do so much. As I said, we used to love this place, and we had some great memories here, but it is far from that idyllic, luxury hotel we remember, and we will most likely not be staying again or recommending it to others.
