Rising like a Phoenix from the desert floor is The Westin Mission Hills Resort & Spa, a Starwood Resort property, located in stylish Rancho Mirage near Palm Springs. The collection of rooms is inviting, tasteful and a perfect complement to the desert terrain with earthy hues, rich textiles, and terraces overlooking the grounds and golf courses. And, speaking of golf, swingers can take to one of two championship courses while at the Westin Hills Resort that will challenge even the most skilled player. There are also tennis courts, fitness facilities, and a free-form swimming pool shaded by leafy palm trees and flanked by ample-size loungers.

We recently stayed at The Westin Rancho Mirage, and while we have stayed here many times, mostly during Coachella, it has changed quite a bit over the last five years. I also believe it was taken over by a different management company and is no longer run by Marriott. I am also a Bonvoy Gold member. Let's begin with the positives. The grounds are still beautiful, the room is nice and perfectly suitable for a short stay, and the breakfast buffet was delicious. And, for Coachella, the shuttle was awesome and never too crowded. On the other hand, there are some major issues. The hotel, overall, is in dire need of updating. The rooms, while nice, are old and need to be modernized. The adult pool is falling apart--the tables, chairs, and pool were in disarray and dirty. You could see the rusting all around the pool. And, for it being Coachella, there was no effort at all to appeal to festival goers. There was no music--the bartender said the speakers were broken and are supposed to be fixed. They did have a DJ at the main pool, but that's is a whole different story that I will discuss now. The main pool is no longer the beautiful oasis it used to be as it has become overrun with children and seems more like a time share than a luxury resort. The addition of the "arcade/bowling alley" also makes the place more family friendly, which is fine as as that is clearly the target audience now. But, for those traveling without kids, it honestly cheapens the aesthetic, and combined with the pool, makes the entire thing feel like a Six Flags water park. And, when we were given the complimentary Happy Hour drinks, I had a completely different idea of what that was going to be like. Instead of going to a chill bar, it felt like we were at a children's birthday party, and the drinks were warm and cheap-tasting. Again, there were just kids running around everywhere, which felt weird, considering there were tables full of Bud Lights and cocktails. You can't really do both. Finally, considering the price we paid--$2,100 for three days (I understand that it's Coachella pricing), it definitely was not worth that amount. And, they did give us a late checkout till 2, but we wanted to stay till four, and they charged us an extra $20 an hour. Guess, Bonvoy can only do so much. As I said, we used to love this place, and we had some great memories here, but it is far from that idyllic, luxury hotel we remember, and we will most likely not be staying again or recommending it to others.

Very disappointing hospitality. We booked two rooms but they only gave us one and had us waiting for an hour past 4 pm for the second one even though it was ready. The wait to check in at registration counter is another big red flag as it took an hour to get through the process. We wasted 3 hours total to check in and get the keys for both the rooms. The restaurants don’t have much choice - especially for vegetarians. The entrees are way overpriced given the quantity they serve. Very limited food options overall - especially if you arrive here with kids. We don’t expect this from a Marriott property.

This place is a must. Wonderful vacation!!! The staff was amazingly helpful and accommodating. Ilda in house keeping was so kind and thoughtful. James at the front desk made you feel like a friend. Lifeguard Edward at the pool was great with the kids. So were the girls in the shack. Can’t say enough great things.

I wanted to give a huge shoutout to James at the front desk—he made our check-in at the Westin Rancho Mirage so smooth and welcoming! From the moment we arrived, he was friendly, professional, and incredibly helpful. He walked us through everything the resort had to offer, including fun things to do with our kids and tips on how to make the most of our stay. James also makes great conversation and has such a warm, easygoing energy. He’s truly the perfect person to greet guests and set the tone for a great visit. Thank you, James, for starting our trip off on such a positive note!

I would like to give a shoutout to James T. with the front desk guest reception. He was a delight to work with when checking in for our stay after a hectic day of travel cross country. He is kind, knowledgeable, guest-oriented, and an overall amazing human. He was so accommodating as I am 8 months pregnant and it is hard for me to walk up stairs. He did everything within his power to make sure my stay was safe and comfortable for me! I appreciate James and enjoyed our interaction.
