Called a “sexy, eco-conscious hideaway in the jungle” by Travel + Leisure, Viceroy Riviera Maya utilizes nature’s beauty in its design and details. Thatched stucco villas are finished with louvered mahogany doors, sisal rugs and canopy beds with Egyptian linens, and the surrounding rainforest infuses the grounds with serenity. Viceroy blends just the right amount of indulgence into your stay: Beckon a “tropical butler” for a poolside iced towel and learn about the area’s best tequilas during a tasting led by the resident Maestro Tequilero.

The Viceroy Riviera Maya is truly exceptional — one of the best vacations we have ever taken. From the moment we arrived, we knew this stay was something special. The service was outstanding across the board — every single team member went above and beyond with genuine warmth and attention to detail. After a long day of travel, being greeted with cool, frozen towels that not only refreshed us but smelled absolutely amazing was such a thoughtful touch. Even while relaxing on the beach, those same little details continued to elevate the experience. Our private villa exceeded every expectation. The outdoor moon shower and heated plunge pool were exactly what we were looking for and truly made the stay unforgettable. The privacy, peacefulness, and jungle setting created such a serene and romantic atmosphere. Hats off to the chef — every meal and snack was absolutely scrumptious. The quality, presentation, and flavors were consistently outstanding. My husband was especially happy that Michelob Ultra was available (a small but appreciated win 😊). The spa was tranquil, relaxing, and beautifully done — the perfect place to unwind and fully disconnect. We were already prepared to book our return visit when we learned the resort will be closed next December for renovations, which was very disappointing. We sincerely hope that any future expansion preserves the peaceful, intimate essence that makes this resort so special. Adding large buildings or significantly increasing the number of rooms would truly change what makes this place magical. We would absolutely love to return and hope to do so in the future. If the resort is not open next December, we will sadly be trying another destination — but The Viceroy Riviera Maya has set the bar incredibly high. Highly, highly recommend.

My wife and I just celebrated our 20th Wedding Anniversary at The Viceroy Riviera Maya and it could not have been better. The setting is perfect for a laid back relaxing getaway, the staff went above and beyond from the moment we arrive and food was amazing.

My husband and I just returned from a week at the Viceroy Riviera Maya, and honestly, it was one of the best vacations we’ve ever had. This boutique resort nails the perfect balance: intimate, peaceful, and beautifully run. We stayed in a private, secluded bungalow with its own plunge pool, and it felt like our own little jungle hideaway. The spa was unbelievable — the whole experience was so thoughtfully done, and we both had excellent massages. Breakfast was included with our room, and it was unreal every single morning. It became one of our favorite parts of the day — incredible food, gorgeous setting, and none of the nickel-and-diming that so many resorts lean into. If we wanted an extra dish or my vanilla latte with lactose-free milk (yes, they had it!), they just brought it. No upcharges, no hesitation. It sets a tone of generosity you feel everywhere on the property. What really blew us away, though, was the staff. Every single person we met was warm, professional, and genuinely kind. The level of service is the best we’ve experienced anywhere. Half the time, things we needed appeared before we even asked, and if we did ask, it arrived instantly. When you learn that many team members have been there 14+ years, it tells you everything about how well they’re treated — and how much pride they take in creating an amazing guest experience. The location is perfect: quiet, lush, and steps from a lovely beach. We had dinner at the hotel three nights and easily could’ve eaten there every night — the food was that good. Since we had a car, we went into Playa del Carmen once (fun, but definitely optional), and two nights we walked to Coco Cabañas for casual ceviche and pizza. Super easy and a nice change of pace. One of our highlights was scuba diving with pregnant bull sharks — such a cool, unforgettable experience. And coming back to the calm of the Viceroy afterward made it even better. We will absolutely be returning. If you’re considering this resort, just go. You will not be disappointed. Every part of our stay was exceptional, and while I started to write down individual staff names to thank… the list got so long that I worried about leaving someone out. Truly, everyone was amazing. Already looking forward to our next visit.

I’d stayed at the Viceroy before so knew it’d be a wonderful hotel…and second time round, it was even better. Ok, the rooms have rustic charm (some may say shabby chic, but who cares). The outdoors of your villa is a jungle complete with wild animals (and a few cats for good measures!) and a heated pool. What more do you want? The beach is great, although it’s very public so you’ll find the odd vendor trading their wares. Huge high points for me: Staff - joyful. Eager to please, always delivered. Oscar and Pepe were standout! Food - yummmmm! Since we were last there the chef has been replaced by Mexico’s Alejandro Salgado and now it’s culinary heaven (think fusion cookery). I have to say we were all inclusive and nothing was off limits. The wines/cocktails were a treat. Fellow guests were also fun, a mixed bunch of various nationalities, def not predominantly American. I LOVE this hotel, truly. It’s one of my favourites in the world - certainly top 5. It’s also value for money, what I mean it’s worth every penny! It’s sadly closing for refurb in May, 2026. But once it reopens as Arnie said: I’LL BE BACK… Joyous!

I cannot explain all the great reviews of the place, it is tiny in size, a long strip of narrow tunnel paths leading to a very small patch of land that contains the small pool and all restaurants. Super narrow beach which is in itself nice but it is not private so there is a constant stream of people walking inches in front of you, and coming to swim in a small bit of sea somewhat cleared from seaweed, including children of course. VERY dated rooms, impossibly noisy aircons and bugs in the room. The only positive thing I noticed was friendly service.
