Watch ALSO stolen from a room - in the SAME TIME PERIOD. What is going on at this hotel???!!!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

I came here to share what happened to us at Maybourne Riviera during our most recent stay in late August, after my Cartier watch went missing from our hotel room, and hotel management’s response has been deeply disappointing. Then my JAW DROPPED when I saw this other recent review (a few reviews down from mine) - there was another traveler reporting her watch also stolen from the room - in the SAME TIME PERIOD, EVEN THE SAME EXACT WATCH TYPE (mine was also a $30,000 gold and diamond Cartier watch) ….. The other traveler’s experience is so eerily similar to mine even down to the hotel’s response, I almost thought I wrote that review myself and forgot. THIS IS TRULY INSANE AND UNSETTLING!!!!! Now, onto my own experience: This is our third stay at Maybourne Riviera, and needless to say it will be our last. During our stay, my Cartier watch went missing from the room. As we were leaving the room, a male housekeeping employee entered to service it. When we returned to our room two hours later, the same employee was still in the room and had apparently not yet finished. At the time, I thought this was unusual, and I subsequently confirmed with the manager in the lobby that routine housekeeping service should generally take around 30 minutes. Shorty afterward, when I was getting dressed and looking for the watch to wear, it was gone. I want to be clear that - I have not accused any specific hotel employee of the theft of my watch. I provided the hotel with all these facts and timeline that I believed to be highly relevant to the investigation. We also immediately reported the theft to the hotel and went to the police station in Menton right away on what was supposed to be our last day of vacation, instead we were sitting there trying to provide all these details to the French policewoman who was very nice but spoke no English. It was an extremely stressful experience to say the least. (I was in tears and the policewoman was trying to correct my French pronunciation of the word “investigation”….) YEP. For the next several weeks, our email communications with Maybourne were met with variations of “the investigation is ongoing”. Julien Berthillon from the hotel management largely just stalled us saying “investigation is underway”, and even emphasized the fact that the watch had not been placed in the safe box, which is was not. But IS THAT REALLY THE STANDARD OF SECURITY guests should expect from Maybourne Riviera??? Should guests reasonably expect that a $30,000 watch left in the room outside of the safe may simply disappear, with the hotel ultimately taking no responsibility and providing no meaningful explanation? Now almost 4 weeks later, we have finally been told by Maybourne that "investigation is closed, there’s not much we can do from here”. They claimed they reviewed security cameras - there are no cameras in the room, imagine how easy it is for someone to grab a small watch and take it out of the room without IT showing on the hallway cameras. This isn’t a TV we’re talking about. And now, seeing another guest report an eerily similar Cartier theft from her room during the same period makes this whole thing so so shocking. And I guarantee you, the hotel GM Francisco Garcia will leave a response to my review that is similar to his response to the other traveller’s stolen watch review. FRANCISCO - there is something seriously wrong at this hotel!!! If you are looking for a luxury property to stay in the French Riviera, AVOID THIS ONE at all costs unless you want your valuables to be stolen and not a single ounce of accountability taken from the hotel. For east of Nice, go to Grand Hotel du Cap Ferrat, or if you want to be in Monaco, go to Hotel de Paris. This is absolutely crazy… @Salishad85 — if you happen to see this review, please contact me at lsun0726@gmail.com. There isn’t a direct messaging option on Tripadvisor, and I would very much like to speak with you about what happened to you. I am so freaking shocked!!!!

Unrivaled Luxury & Flawless Execution During Monaco Grand Prix Week!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

Staying at The Maybourne Riviera during the F1 Grand Prix was nothing short of a transcendent experience. Given the intense volume and heavy traffic of race week, you might expect staff to show fatigue, yet their attention to detail remained absolute perfection. The hotel's coordination was top-tier-taking a private boat tender from near the property straight into Port Hercule at the heart of the Grand Prix circuit made accessing the race completely seamless and stress-free. Returning to the hotel each day was a true sanctuary. The service was 100% committed, and the accommodations were magnificent, offering an unmatched cliffside atmosphere and an elevated standard of luxury that you simply have to experience firsthand. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and cannot recommend this extraordinary property enough!

Staff stole my watch and the hotel covered it up

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I have a laundry list of reasons why this hotel is wildly overpriced and, in my opinion, falls far short of what should qualify as a five-star luxury property. I can echo some of the complaints from other guests regarding the malfunctioning Toto toilet seat, rude and dismissive staff at the pool and restaurant, and other service issues. However, those things pale in comparison to what happened during my stay. My $30,000 gold and diamond Cartier watch disappeared after hotel staff accessed my jewelry without my permission. I requested that hotel staff unpack my clothing. I did not give anyone permission to go through my jewelry or personal valuables. Nevertheless, while unpacking, staff went into my bag, removed my jewelry bag, and handled its contents without my authorization. My Cartier watch was inside that jewelry bag, and afterward, it was gone. To be very clear: no one other than the hotel staff who unpacked my belongings had access to my jewelry during this time. There was also no security personnel present to supervise the employees while they were in my room handling my belongings and valuables. Adding to my concern, the hotel’s employee/staff room was located directly across from my room, making it extremely easy for someone to remove something from my room and take it out of sight within seconds. What I found equally disturbing was the hotel’s response. I was told that an “investigation” had been conducted, yet I was given no meaningful information about what that investigation actually entailed, what was reviewed, who was interviewed, whether surveillance footage was examined, or what steps were taken to determine what happened to my watch. The manager, Julian, essentially told me that he trusted his staff, and that was the end of the matter. His statements also changed during our conversations. Initially, I was told that something like this had never happened at the hotel. Later, I was told that when similar situations had occurred, guests eventually found their missing property in a pocket or somewhere among their belongings. Those two explanations are obviously inconsistent and only increased my concern about how this situation was being handled. A hotel advertising itself as a five-star luxury property should have strict procedures surrounding staff access to guests’ valuables, particularly when employees are entering rooms and handling personal belongings. Staff should certainly not be opening and removing a guest’s jewelry bag when they were only asked to unpack clothing. I left this hotel without my $30,000 Cartier watch and without any satisfactory explanation of how it disappeared after staff accessed the bag in which it was kept. Based on the circumstances and the hotel’s handling of the situation, I do not feel that valuables are safe here. Be extremely careful if you choose to stay at this property. I would not bring anything valuable here, and I personally would never stay here again.

Exceptional Hotel and Experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

An Exceptional Stay at The Maybourne Riviera Our stay at The Maybourne Riviera was truly exceptional. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the breathtaking views and the remarkable setting. The property is absolutely stunning, and our room was beautiful, exceptionally comfortable, and perfectly appointed. Waking up each morning to those views was an experience in itself. What really set the hotel apart, however, was the service. The staff were attentive, gracious, and genuinely interested in making our stay special. There was a wonderful personal approach throughout our visit that made us feel less like guests at a hotel and more like welcomed friends. That level of warmth and attention is becoming increasingly rare. The dinners were outstanding. The quality of the food, presentation, atmosphere, and service made each evening something we genuinely looked forward to. Dining while taking in the spectacular surroundings made the experience even more memorable. If I had to mention one area that could be improved, it would be the pool service. On several occasions, the service was slower than we would have expected from a hotel of this caliber. It was a relatively minor issue, but improving the attentiveness and speed of poolside service would make an already exceptional experience even better. Overall, The Maybourne Riviera delivered a truly memorable stay. The extraordinary location, spectacular views, beautiful accommodations, outstanding dining, and—most importantly—the personal and thoughtful service made this a place we will remember fondly and would happily return to.
