The dignified, turreted Rufflet's Country House Hotel is one of the oldest established country manor hotels in Scotland. This member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World is set in 10 acres of award-winning gardens just a mile west of St. Andrews and has been awarded 5 Stars by the Scottish Tourist Board. The main house and two separate lodges offer exquisite guestrooms and suites, all furnished with a tasteful blend of contemporary and antique styles. Fresh local produce and prime Scottish beef highlight fine dining at the Garden Restaurant, recipient of a much-coveted two AA Rosettes.

A beautiful building with comfortable, spacious rooms and excellent food served in the restaurant. However, our stay was ruined by curt, unhelpful, and passive-aggressive staff who try to spend their lives evading work in the 'office' which they have turned into a common room. One member of staff in particular - she wears a micro-kilt and has piercings (which turned out to be a warning sign) - did everything she could to ruin our stay and that of other residents by bullying other staff into either not helping guests at all or helping them as slowly as possible (I heard her do so when making my way down the staircase on the first day). When I did venture to the office to ask for service at reception, the bar or restaurant (sometimes on behalf of other guests who had been waiting for ten minutes or more for signs of life) I was greeted with a lot of eye-rolling and huffing from staff sat on desks (with Ms Micro Kilt leading the way). We will never go back, and other guests staying at the same time said the same. But I must mention that fantastic service we got in the restaurant from a young catering student called Samantha. If Rufflets only hired people like Sam it would be tens times better for it.

Overall, the hotel largely met my expectations. It is a beautiful place, with comfortable rooms, excellent food, and a great deal of Scottish charm. My stay began on a disappointing note. with a problem in the bathtub that was not fixed, but aside from that the stay was very enjoyable.

Great trip and superb service from the team at Rufflets. Friendly service with a smile and clean rooms. 100% we’ll be back!

Mixed experience in lovely old country house hotel. Staff friendly and courteous when encountered but could feel a little like a ghost town at times with no staff around

Hotel was brilliant, and the room was so good that we decided to extend our stay another night whilst there to enjoy it further.
