Luxury Prices Are Expected — Misleading Charges Are No

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

We travel often and regularly stay at luxury hotels, so we understand that premium service comes with premium pricing. Unfortunately, our experience here felt misleading and deeply disappointing. We were specifically told that our transfer price included a short lunch stop along the way. Only after the trip did we discover we were charged an additional €300 for that brief stop — on top of an already extremely expensive transfer. The total cost for a 3 hour and 45 minute transfer was €975. To put that into perspective, during this same trip we booked three separate 8-hour private tours with private drivers through other 5-star hotels in France, and every one of those full-day experiences cost less than this transfer. Beyond the billing issues, we also dealt with multiple contradictory explanations from staff, incorrect charges, a bedroom AC that did not work properly, and a television that repeatedly malfunctioned. What was most concerning was the overall tone when these issues were raised. During our stay, we witnessed several other guests in loud disputes with hotel staff in the lobby, which suggested we were not the only ones experiencing problems. Had everything been explained honestly upfront, this review would likely not exist. We are happy to pay for excellent service. What we object to is feeling misled. Beautiful property, but the lack of transparency and professionalism completely overshadowed the experience.

Avoid it

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

The Byblos used to be the best. I am going since it opened- I was a student, then I brought my husband there. In 2022 I had an accident in the Byblos navette to the beach. The attitude of the hotel was and is abominable. I would tell everyone to avoid it at all costs. It is not the hotel that it once was- glory days are over. Very poor management has ruined this once wonderful hotel. I sent many people there over the years- no more.

Great experience, as usual

The Byblos is the nicest hotel in Saint-Tropez. I enjoyed staying there during Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. The rooms are big and people are very nice and efficient. And the breakfast is amazing.

Not true luxury – poor management

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 8 months ago

I stayed at Hotel Byblos in Saint-Tropez for two nights in a suite with a pool view. I arrived around 6 pm on September 12th and checked out on the 14th. Unfortunately, on the 13th it rained heavily all day, so I could not even enjoy the beach, which was one of the main reasons for my visit. The real disappointment was the hotel’s approach to check-in and check-out times. Byblos is the only so-called luxury hotel I have ever visited where check-in is at 4 pm and check-out is at 11 am, even though breakfast runs until 11. In virtually every other luxury property I have stayed at, the standard is 3 pm check-in and 12 noon check-out, and late check-out of 30 minutes or even an hour is granted without any problem — even when the next guest is arriving the same day. That is simply considered normal courtesy. At Byblos, where check-in does not even start until 4 pm, refusing such a basic request is even weaker. It clearly shows the hotel’s bad will and poor management. When I asked about a late check-out, one receptionist told me that noon would be possible, but anything later would require the manager’s approval. The next day, when I asked another receptionist, she had no idea I had already been given noon and told me the maximum was 11:30. Later she came back and said she had spoken to the manager, and they would “allow” noon. This chaos and inconsistency make it clear that decisions were being made arbitrarily, not according to any real policy. Many of my friends had stayed at Byblos in previous years and never encountered such issues, but I have since learned that the hotel recently changed management — which might explain why things that were once simple are now unnecessarily complicated. The atmosphere at Byblos also felt artificial rather than genuinely welcoming. Apart from a few senior concierges who clearly know their job and deliver professional service, the rest of the team seemed average at best. I even witnessed a receptionist roll her eyes while a guest was simply checking his bill at check-out. This kind of behavior does not reflect the professionalism of a true luxury property. Ironically, after leaving Byblos I checked into the Carlton in Cannes, where—without even asking—I was warmly offered a 2 pm check-out. That is the standard of service and flexibility expected from a hotel in this category. Despite its reputation, Byblos did not meet luxury standards, and for me, this experience deserves only one star. The only true positives I can mention are that IQOS smoking is allowed everywhere — at breakfast, at dinner, indoors and outdoors — and the restaurant service staff were genuinely friendly. Pleasant, yes, but certainly not enough to justify a two-star rating.
