About the Hotel

Brimming with authentic Austrian charm, Hotel Goldener Hirsch, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Salzburg, is a cherished symbol of exceptional hospitality and celebrated tradition. Dating back to 1407, the property embodies an enduring symbiosis between original country house and luxury boutique hotel, woven into the very fabric of Salzburg life. Steeped in history, the hotel's petite proportions understate its significance as a cultural landmark, where the crossroads of music, art and cuisine intersect. Located in the Baroque heart of the historic center, Hotel Goldener Hirsch inhabits the fairy tale setting with natural grace. In the bijoux lobby, white-washed walls and leather furniture are offset with ancient arches and historic artefacts, like the hand-carved reception desk and heirloom wooden key case. Traditionally dressed associates, wearing uniforms reminiscent of national Tracht, welcome guests with a rare warmth that resonates across generations. Six centuries of history, the much beloved Goldener Hirsch style melds harmoniously with the most modern amenities. In 70 rooms and suites carefully curated antiques such as shoemaker's benches transformed into tables combine effortlessly with the latest televisions and coffee machines by Illy. Traditional "Fleckerlteppich" rugs complement the solid wood floors as well as hand-printed fabrics in pink, cornflower blue and red from the Salzburg firm Jordis. Refreshing sleep is assured in king-size and twin beds. Generously proportioned bathrooms in marble with porcelain by Villeroy & Boch offer shower or tub, or shower and tub. The view out onto Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz or Getreidegasse enchant, while soundproof windows ensure that rooms are always quiet.

Family of 7 with 3 rooms. Staff were amazing. Concierge didn’t miss a beat. Sorted out all restaurants needed to our 4 kids. Directions all sorted. Super smooth stay.

One of the world's great hotels

This is one of the worlds great hotels - a distinction that comes only with a long lineage of service. The rooms are impeccible. The location cannot be beat. The staff are gracious and kind.

I love this place

Always exceptional in every detail, and wonderfully historic. The furnishings are fabulous antiques, but with all the best modern touches. Impeccable service. A favorite hotel!

Charm that outweighs the misfires

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Rating: 7/10 My family and I stayed here in rooms 84 and 85 for two nights in July 2025. Goldener Hirsch has a ton of personality and historical weight, and for the right traveler—especially one who’s spry and unfazed by a few quirks—it offers a memorable, romantic stay in the heart of Salzburg. While our visit was marked by some mechanical hiccups and moments of uneven service, these may well have been one-offs rather than the norm. The charm of the place, paired with surprisingly reasonable prices for a five-star hotel in such a prime location, makes it easy to forgive the imperfections. It’s a property that remembers its past beautifully—and with just a little more consistency, could fully embrace its present. I’d return. Positives: • The location couldn’t be better. Step outside and you’re in the heart of Salzburg’s historic district, minutes from shops, bratwurst vendors, cafés, and more Mozart kitsch than you’ll know what to do with. The river, with its scenic running and biking trail, is just a short stroll away. You’re right in the thick of it, and that’s worth a lot. • The staff were friendly, helpful, and handled the not-insignificant challenge of valet parking in a tightly packed old town with ease. They also loaded up our car with our bags at departure, making the check-out process refreshingly seamless. • The rooms lean hard into their baroque heritage, but not in an oppressive or overdone way. The hotel building dates back to the 1400s, and a recent renovation has smartly layered in comfort and subtle modern upgrades. Think: charming antiques and wooden beams, but also in-bathroom music channels. It’s a vibe—and a surprisingly pleasant one. Negatives: • We were assigned connecting rooms with a shared private foyer—nice in theory. But when we instinctively closed the interior partition door on our way out for the evening, we returned to find that the keypad controlling it had failed. Suddenly, our rooms—and all our belongings—were locked behind a high-tech, non-functional door from which there seemed to be no escape. The front desk staff, increasingly concerned, confessed they might not even have a physical key. After multiple treks up and down to the fourth floor, one staffer made a final, dramatic attempt with an old-fashioned key, warning us that failure might mean spending the night separated from our luggage. Thankfully, he succeeded. Still, the whole thing felt a little too immersive in the “centuries-old” experience. • On our second day, the elevator broke—and never came back. Four flights of stairs became a recurring obstacle course, especially for my elderly mother, who started avoiding trips to the room entirely. One afternoon, while waiting in the lobby, a staff member did offer her a water… but frankly, more care or accommodation would’ve gone a long way. • We gave the hotel restaurant a shot one evening, hoping for a refined Austrian dinner. What we got was underwhelming and overpriced. My cream of mushroom soup was missing, well, the cream—turning a comforting classic into something more reminiscent of mushroom tea. Not exactly a highlight.

Truly 5 star experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

This is a true 5 star hotel. Hands down, no question. Located perfectly in the heart of Salzburg, the attention to detail and to the staff is consistently above and beyond. Anja, at the front desk was always helpful and anticipating my needs and Patrick at the bar makes the most delicious, unique cocktails that are simply craveable! The rooms we had were spacious with stunning views that offered old, hand carved furniture combined with the most modern, luxurious and thoughtful details in the restroom, showers and bedding. This is the only hotel in Salzburg I would stay at when I go back!
