Set amidst Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, this 249-room luxury San Diego resort captures the elegance and comfort of an old-world Mediterranean estate with an enviable Southern California locale. Its design honors the indelible style of visionary architect Addison Mizner (1872 – 1933) who drew his inspiration from Spain’s palaces and France’s sun-washed coastal retreats.

Such a beautiful resort, and the Grand Golf Club was in excellent condition — but I wish our overall experience felt as grand as the price we paid. I booked directly through the resort website because of the “Trifecta Golf Package.” It included one round at the Grand Golf Club, and I mistakenly assumed the package also helped arrange tee times at the other two courses (with separate green fees, of course). Unfortunately, we learned later that we had to call San Diego Golf Reservations ourselves to book those courses. It felt a bit misleading, given the “Trifecta Golf” description. In hindsight, I wish I had booked through Expedia or another site that includes all taxes and fees upfront — we were surprised with extra resort fees and taxes averaging $230–$250 per night, plus $70 per night for parking on our checkout statement. We arrived late on our first night. The valet and bellman were incredibly courteous and helpful — they assisted with our luggage and stored our golf bags for the morning tee time. The front desk agent was also polite and friendly at first, but things took an awkward turn when he followed us all the way to our room — seemingly expecting a tip. The bellman even told him, “I’ve got it from here,” yet he ignored it and came along anyway. It was uncomfortable and left a strange impression. Aside from that encounter, the staff overall were very professional, especially the valet and bellmen. The team at Amaya was also accommodating since we had to rush for our tee time — though I found the food mediocre and not worth the price. Our room was comfortable, with a decent size and nice view. It was quite a walk from the main lobby and elevators, but I actually appreciated the peace and quiet. Before checking out, I noticed the tissue box and coffee creamers hadn’t been restocked. When I asked, housekeeping said they had “run out” — which, honestly, felt unacceptable for a high-end property like this. Overall, it’s a beautiful resort with professional staff and a fantastic golf course — but between the misleading golf package details, surprise fees, and minor service lapses, the stay didn’t quite live up to the luxury experience we expected.

I had a wonderful experience during my stay at this hotel. The property was clean, comfortable, and beautifully maintained, but what truly stood out was the amazing customer service. Myles went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect from check-in to check out. He was professional, friendly, and genuinely cared about making our stay enjoyable. It’s rare to encounter that level of attentiveness and warmth. Thank you, Myles, for your outstanding service, you made our visit memorable! I’ll definitely be returning and recommending this hotel.
