Disappointing Stay at a Once-Loved Property

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 11 hours ago

My husband and I stayed over the 4th of July weekend—an annual tradition for us. (We usually choose between the Hyatt and the Hilton SD Bayfront.) We've stayed at this property several times over the years, beginning with our wedding night nearly 31 years ago. Unfortunately, after this most recent visit, we're reconsidering future stays. We were in the Harbor Tower during an exceptionally busy time, with both the holiday and an on-site convention contributing to the crowds. While we understand high occupancy can strain operations, several aspects of our experience left us disappointed. The property is clearly showing signs of age and is in need of significant updates. The bathrooms feel outdated, carpets in the hallways and elevator areas are noticeably worn, and the windows were so dirty they detracted from the view. Elevator service was a major issue. On the evening of the 4th, one of the three elevators broke down while full of guests. Throughout the weekend, it appeared that only two of the three in the tower were operational, resulting in long waits—even during off-peak hours. Being on the 39th floor, taking the stairs simply wasn't an option. We were also disappointed with the "Top of the Hyatt." What was once a refined spot for upscale cocktails and incredible views now feels more like a casual lounge. The former dress code has been abandoned, replaced by video games, neon signage, and a magnetic dart board. The once complimentary popcorn and mixed nuts are now a $12.95 appetizer— adding pickled vegetables. While we understand that properties evolve, paying premium rates for a dated experience is hard to justify. We’re more than willing to walk a bit farther from the bay if it means staying somewhere that offers better value and upkeep.

Views were exceptional, hotel was clean, friendly staff, the food at Sally's was amazing and the beds had the best pillows I have ever slept on!

10/10 Stay – Exceptional Service and Thoughtful Touches

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

We had a fantastic stay at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego to celebrate our anniversary. From the moment we arrived, Alfredo at check-in went above and beyond—he recognized my World of Hyatt Explorist status and warmly congratulated us on our anniversary. He even arranged a complimentary breakfast, which was such a thoughtful and appreciated gesture. The room had a stunning view, and every interaction with the staff was courteous and professional. The location is perfect for exploring San Diego, and the overall atmosphere of the hotel is both elegant and welcoming. This was our first stay here, and thanks to the outstanding service—especially Alfredo’s—we will definitely be back. Highly recommend for anyone celebrating a special occasion or just looking for a first-class stay in the city.

Unacceptable Cleanliness and Service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 days ago

I stayed at this hotel for five nights. Not long after settling in, I lifted the tray holding the complimentary water and glass cups and found a pubic hair underneath. Then I noticed another one on the curtain. I contacted the front desk to report it. They apologized and said housekeeping would be sent to address it. Housekeeping did come, but they barely did anything. They straightened the bed but left the pubic hair on the curtain completely untouched. It remained there for the next three days (even though housekeeping came back the next two days). I was also told the housekeeping manager would call me directly, but that never happened. To make things worse, there was constant loud door-slamming from the nearby utility or housekeeping area. It continued throughout my stay, with no regard for the guests on that floor. Cleanliness and basic follow-through are not optional and this hotel failed on both.

Excellent Stay at the Grand Hyatt San Diego

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 days ago

I had a great experience at the Grand Hyatt San Diego. The service was outstanding, especially from Alfredo, who went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect during my stay. My room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. The location is central and made it easy to explore downtown, the waterfront, and nearby attractions. I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting San Diego.
