Pacific Beach, a coastal San Diego neighborhood, is an unlikely place for a hideaway crafted from translucent glass with lines that are contemporary and clean. But that is what you will find at Tower23 Hotel, a chic retreat surrounded by serious surfers and sun-worshippers. Sporting a cool and unconventional façade, its name is derived from lifeguard tower 23, which is positioned near the hotel and serves as a beacon for beach goers. Select from an assortment of room and suite types - Spirit Pad, Sky Pad, Surf Pad, Sanctuary Suite and Sweet Suite - that bask in modernistic features with sleek furnishings and minimalist appointments, coupled with private balconies or patios. The amenities are also a bit out-of-the-box, with chromatherapy baths, step-in rain showers, mini-bars personalized to your liking, and Xbox entertainment centers.

I stayed 4 nights at Tower23 in early July 2025 -- the weather was cool (60s) early morning and late evening and stayed in the mid-70s/80s range during the day. Tower 23 is located STEPS from Pacific Beach, so if that's your primary objective for visiting San Diego you will definitely not go wrong choosing this hotel. For the location and quality of lodging, the price was also very reasonable -- make sure you look at their offers on the website. I initially stayed in a large suite with a great beach view that also overlooked the outdoor plaza area but it was located close to an HVAC unit (or something that seemed like it) and noise from that generator was very disruptive. The desk reception (Steven -- what a wonderful person!) moved me to another (smaller) room, that had a partial view of the ocean (was not a dealbreaker given location of the hotel). The staff were great and friendly. Steven and Natalia were professional, friendly, and very engaging. LOCATION/TRANSPORTATION: Beachfront. Within a residential neighborhood so it was a chill vibe and provided a sense of familiarity. For getting around outside the beach area for other tourist sites & neighborhoods I uber'd -- but rides generally costed $25-35 because that's how far out everything turned out to be. There are also two main bus lines that run by the hotel with bus stops a block away, and that was also an option I took advantage of. La Jolla is a short bus ride away and dropped me off close to The Cave Store. From there I was able to check out the beach with all the seals and their families. I Uber'd to Balboa Park my first day but took the bus to Old Town, Gaslamp, and North Park. FOOD/COFFEE: I did not eat at their restaurant (JRDN) but it was always busy. There are A LOT of options and choices. My main mission was tacos but I enjoyed many other things as well. The hotel is located less than a minute away from Kona Cafe -- a super popular breakfast/lunch spot where people will stand in line for (line starts forming around 0900). Oscar's is also another place (tacos, seafood plates) v. popular with the neighborhood crowd. There are also several (excellent) cafes within walking distance (Kona has its own coffee shack adjacent to the eatery) and if you like grabbing groceries (like I do) there's a Ralph's two blocks away. FITNESS: THERE IS NO GYM AT THIS HOTEL. That is usually a decision point for me but the location on the beach outweighed that (and I 99.9% always choose a hotel with a gym). Instead of my usual strength training workout, I ran the beach -- you can easily knock out 5-6 miles from one end of Pacific Beach to the other. And because I seemed to be eating all the time -- it worked out.

Great hotel with a beautiful view. Friendly staff, clean rooms, comfortable beds, good location (within walking distance to shops and restaurants). You can borrow bikes, boogie boards, chairs etc from front desk. Very quick walk to the beach Highly recommend!

I’ve stayed at this location twice and each time they have gone above and beyond for me and my partner especially Stephanie at the front desk , was very kind , helpful and attentive. P.S the best is the comfiest hotel bed I’ve ever experienced

Bed was comfortable and great location. Stayed here about 9 years ago and the place is due for an upgrade. The rooms and decor are getting shabby.

Excellent Customer Service! Accomodated everything and what's cool is they offer all the beach goodies you'd need to enjoy the stay. We took the bikes for a stroll down the boardwalk.

Outstanding location facing the ocean in an old beach suburb of San Diego. Beautiful setting and clean contemporary design to establish a new standard for the city. Impeccable rooms atop a fine restaurant and service is hip, attentive and aware. I lose myself every time I stay. A highlight of my travels.
