Reviews for The Westgate Hotel

Disappointing overall for having such a high rating

Well first off the positive. The adjacent gym next door is incredible which is really why I chose this property. The roof top lap pool and open air gym was really great. The staff there are very attentive. Joseph at the gym was very professional and passionate about his work. Gym amenities are really great even having a cool plunge pool in the men’s locker room. Sauna, steam, great equipment and free weight selections. Now the negative: I got in very late, close to midnight and was very tired. I had completed a lot through the online check in process. The front desk guy seemed to have no idea of what he was doing and I basically did everything with him that I have spent 5 minutes on the web completing. It took way too long to check in. None of the other front desk staff were very pleasant. I found this very odd. Hotel is very dated and the lobby has a very odd, old smell about it. Hotel room was fine but there were no drawers, only a closet in the bathroom so I had to live out of a suitcase for 5 days. Room thermostat did absolutely nothing so there was not control over the room temperature. The noise! Barking dogs belonging to homeless people in the small encampment on the street below my room. People yelling. My room was on the side above the street where the public transportation trolley runs. It starts at like 5 am and had the strange horn that beeps like every 15 minutes. If you stay here, you may want to ask to be on the streets that are not above the public transportation tracks. They have custom earplugs in the drawers nest to the bed. That is never a good sign! Haha. I just dealt with the noise because I doubted anything could be done about it but it was definitely frustrating. I think it is mainly because the windows are probably very old. After tipping housekeeping very well, they did not replace the coffee. I had to call for this, and again it took way too long to get my request across to the person in guest services. Just bring me some coffee pods. That’s all I needed! So, for $350 a night it was very disappointing. Gym was awesome, but otherwise it was a huge miss. I think anyone can use the gym so I would stay elsewhere and just come to the gym.

Great stay at The Westgate Hotel in San Diego downtown. Thank you Gabriel for being so attentive and accommodating at breakfast. Pool bar is nice and gym first class. Bed was very comfortable and our suite had a nice view. We will be back again.

Sleepless stay

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

My nearly week long stay was a very unpleasant experience. The noise is unbearable all night long. The trolley stops and blast it horn every 5 to 15 minutes all night long. If you end up on that side of the hotel do not plan on getting any rest. A big plus is that they do provide ear plugs.

Trolley horns all night! Stay away!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Do not stay here.!! You have a 1 in 4 chance of not getting a good night sleep. One side of the hotel is directly above a trolley line. There are loud horns during operation and only stop between midnight and 5am. Dont get me wrong the rooms are nice but not worth the disturbance at night. The management know this is an issue but continue to put guests above the trolley line. Never again will I stay here!
