Ideally situated on the edge of Union Square, Campton Place San Francisco, a Taj Hotel sets the standards by which San Francisco's luxury hotels are measured. This landmark hostelry occupies a pair of historic buildings dating back to the early 1900s. In its divine bedrooms and suites, classic refinement is paired with contemporary elegance to create an atmosphere that is both serene and engaging. Among the many superlative amenities is Campton Place Restaurant, where dining pairs seasonal flavors with exquisite wines.

The hotel really presents itself as a five-star luxury hotel. The staff makes good on this promise, but the property itself is quite worn down. The rooms look quite outdated, closets don't close properly anymore, carpets are stained and the hallways have a very pungent food smell. I was hoping on an upgrade since I booked through American Express which the hotel couldn't offer. When I checked into my room I noticed that the airconditioning was very loud even when turned off. The front desk then changed my room to a more spacious one with a silent airconditioning, albeit completely deprived of daylight at the back of the hotel. Breakfast was OK but I didn't really get the concept. I could order from a menu but when I tried to order the granola with berries the server told me that I could make a granola bowl myself on the buffet. I found it strange that for the very little amount of service offered at breakfast, I was forced to sign of on an 18% gratuity charge every day even though I had breakfast included into the room rate. I would prefer if the decision to tip were mine.

We stayed at TAJ Campton Place for two nights, and it was deeply disappointing. On the first night, we couldn’t get any sleep because of the constant noise from adjacent rooms—it felt like the walls were made of paper. For a supposedly luxury hotel, basic soundproofing shouldn’t be too much to ask. Then there were the baffling “facility charges.” What exactly were we paying for? There was no parking included, and we didn’t use a single amenity—not the gym, not the pool (if one even exists). At this rate, are we going to be charged for taking the elevator or walking down the hallway next? As an Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts guest, we were also entitled to an upgrade based on availability. Despite premium rooms clearly being available, we were told they were “too premium” to qualify. What exactly does “upgrade on availability” mean if the hotel gets to arbitrarily redefine it? All in all, this was a frustrating experience masked in the facade of luxury. I would never recommend TAJ Campton Place to friends or family—and certainly not to anyone booking through Amex FHR expecting the promised benefits.

I can confidently say nobody puts real hospitality into practice in the business as much as the Taj group. They train their people to make the guests feel like “guests” not customers the employees of the hotel have to engage with. Everyone I dealt with right from the guy who helped me in the front door to the reception, room service, everyone made an effort to make me feel welcome and comfortable. Special shout out to the Bombay Brasserie chef and staff for the best Indian food I have had in the city. That Gulab Jamoon should be declared a national treasure. These guys know how to do it right. Thank you!!!

Great stay. Rooms are nice and Bombay Brasserie serves great breakfast. Location is good - very close to Union Square. Nice gym. Bed was comfortable and room temperature good. Overall a great choice: upscale, good rates. Only complaint would be the shower head is a bit low, but you can make do.

Pros- The hotel room was nice and the services were good. Cons - we had 2 days of breakfast at the Bombay Brasserie restaurant. My wife ordered pancakes which were pretty much reheated of the frozen pancakes which we were fine with but the pancakes themselves were cold. They promptly reheated another batch and gave them to her. On the second day, I ordered some cut fruits as part of the Indian breakfast. The fruits had mold on them, so I asked the server who apologetically changed the fruit place for us. We probably won’t be staying with them again. I had high expectations for the restaurant but it didn’t live up to them.
