Santa Monica Proper introduces a looser kind of luxury to Santa Monica. Here, along sun-drenched Wilshire Boulevard, within walking distance to the beach, each of the 267 rooms, suites and spaces successfully optimize the city’s abundant ocean breezes and natural light, while the interior design finds inspiration in the organic tones and textures of the local coastline. Santa Monica Proper beckons guests with the only rooftop pool deck on the Westside, a one-of-a-kind setting that includes a Balearic outdoor restaurant, bar, and cabanas, where guests are front-row for sunsets over the Pacific. Our Santa Monica Proper resort offers a true local experience in the heart of the city, walking distance from the beach, boutique shopping, health-conscious cafes, the world-class farmers market, and indulgent fine dining. Anything less just wouldn’t be Proper.

I was looking for a hotel close to Culver City with great amenities and a price tag I thought was fair for LA for a luxury hotel. From the moment I set foot on the property, the service was top-notch. The team here is ON IT. Then my time on the rooftop at Calabra took things up a notch, thanks to the amazing team up there: Juan, Hayden, Omar, Steven (might be spelled with a ph, sorry if I didn't get that right!), and Kim—have all made me feel so at home, and the food lives up to expectations. If you enjoy a Caesar, you'll love theirs! I had little trouble with water pressure in my room and a young woman with a name that starts with an M (it's on the tip of my tongue), with beautiful dark curly hair (adding this so managment can give her her flowers) took care of me right away and swiftly got me into a new room with great water pressure and an upgrade. No back and forth on the issue, just fixed the problem in seconds. There's a reason this hotel is winning awards and holds a MICHELIN Key. SN: Think about a MICHELIN Key like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, if you aren't familiar. I can't wait to book another stay here, and I have so much gratitude for how well they've taken care of me.

We spent three nights at the Proper at the tail end of our California vacation in August. We chose a Premier room in the Landmark building, the heritage building on Wilshire onto which the newer wings of Proper were built. The room was comfortable but snug, and for about $800 a night, all in, no bargain (resort fee. $75 a night parking, etc). The Bel Air this hotel is not. We had one dinner at Calabra, the sprawling, ultra chic rooftop restaurant. Food was fine, but experience marred by being seated next to a bunch of very loud, drunken young people attending a professional meeting. We liked the Wilshire Blvd location away from the bustle and crush of Ocean Avenue. There are great restaurants close by. The experience here was decent but frankly not worth the money. Rates might be lower in less busy times.

German at Palma provided truly exceptional service and went above and beyond to ensure everything went perfectly during a first date. I quickly sensed we were in good hands when we sat down which went a long way towards calming my nerves. I have German to thank for the fact there will be a second date. He should be promoted!

We absolutely loved our stay at the Santa Monica Proper. The hotel itself is stunning — everything feels fresh, modern, and so thoughtfully designed. The rooms were super comfortable, and the overall vibe was relaxing and upscale without feeling stuffy. The food was also fantastic! Everything was fresh and healthy, and breakfast quickly became one of our favorite parts of the day. But what really made our trip so special was German, who took care of us every morning at breakfast. He was so kind, attentive, and genuinely made us feel like family. We actually looked forward to seeing him each day — he set such a positive tone for the whole morning. We’ll definitely be coming back, and we’ll be hoping to see German again when we do!

Well manicured and aesthetically pleasing rooms that supported a luxurious and relaxing stay. Excellent amenities. The staff were friendly, responsive, and highly attentive. Great location, w/in walking distance to the beach and w/in reasonably close proximity to most LA nightlife and activities.
