Santa Monica Proper Hotel

Definitely the worst Proper I’ve stayed at. DTLA and Austin are much better. The Santa Monica proper said they don’t recognize Marriott Bonvoy status outside of getting points, even though their own website explicitly says that they do. We also had a couple broken things in our room, but the hotel didn’t reply to the WhatsApp nor the number they give you to text. What’s the point of those? Fake hospitality, and in general pretty pretentious staff. Now it’s not all bad. The pool, gym, and hotel bar are great. The furnishings in the room are good. The guys out at the valet also great. But I wouldn’t stay here again.

We had a wonderful weekend spent at the Santa Monica Proper Hotel, here in LA for a family wedding. We had three outstanding Premier King rooms in the Landmark building that were spacious, well-appointed, luxurious, comfortable, and immaculate. We enjoyed a sumptuous dinner feast for nine of us at the rooftop Calabra restaurant, which was one of the most delicious meals all of us ever enjoyed. We spent a lazy afternoon at the rooftop pool and had reserved an Alcove area for us to sit in the shade when needed and to enjoy a spectacular lunch. It was quite hot in LA this weekend and we thoroughly enjoyed swimming in the large, perfectly-temperatured pool. Several of our adult children enjoyed the outstanding fitness center, and several took advantage of some of the spa classes available. We had breakfast every morning at the Palma restaurant which was positively delicious! As important as anything, the staff here was outstanding, professional, courteous, helpful, friendly, and simply awesome! We really look forward to returning to LA and staying again at this magnificent hotel. By the way, the hotel is convenient to all of the outstanding features of Santa Monica, including a short walk to the beach and famous Santa Monica Pier, and to all the other great areas for shopping and dining, including Montana Avenue. Oh, I almost forgot the following!: we were about to leave for the wedding on Saturday night and my son’s girlfriend accidentally dropped a diamond earring (which is a family heirloom from her grandmother!) down the drain in the bathroom! My son immediately called the hotel staff and within 30 minutes or so, while we were enroute to the wedding, we were notified that the hotel’s engineering staff had come to the rescue and retrieved the earring intact from the drain! Disaster averted by the awesome staff of Santa Monica Proper! And we became, to say the least, even more grateful guests! Thank you!!!

This hotel has a friendly ambiance with gorgeous but comfortable design. There are vast spaces including a living room on the first floor as well as an amazing rooftop including an open air bar & restaurant, couch seating and heated swimming pool. Bikes, spa & gym added to our activities. We can’t wait to return.

Everything about the SM Proper is truly great, which is why we keep coming back. This is the only hotel we frequent, as it feels like home!

This hotel is all California sunshine. We loved the rooftop pool and also the adjacent spa. My only comment was that the elevator and hallways could use a deep clean.
