Santa Monica Proper introduces a looser kind of luxury to Santa Monica. Here, along sun-drenched Wilshire Boulevard, within walking distance to the beach, each of the 267 rooms, suites and spaces successfully optimize the city’s abundant ocean breezes and natural light, while the interior design finds inspiration in the organic tones and textures of the local coastline. Santa Monica Proper beckons guests with the only rooftop pool deck on the Westside, a one-of-a-kind setting that includes a Balearic outdoor restaurant, bar, and cabanas, where guests are front-row for sunsets over the Pacific. Our Santa Monica Proper resort offers a true local experience in the heart of the city, walking distance from the beach, boutique shopping, health-conscious cafes, the world-class farmers market, and indulgent fine dining. Anything less just wouldn’t be Proper.

We stayed at Proper for 5 nights in August so we were able to experience the hotel on the weekend and on weekdays. The double queen overlooks a Boys and Girls Club and an abandoned apartment building. There was no alley noise but it is an interesting view. We booked through Virtuoso and received no upgrade or even an acknowledgement for not being able to upgrade us. The room was so hot and stuffy. We had them send maintenance to check the AC which said it was 64 degrees (the lowest it would go) but it never reached anything close to 64 degrees in the 5 days we were there. We ended up having to use a fan to try to cool the room down. The food at the restaurants and pool is excellent as are the drinks. Note that drinks are close to $30 each. The pool situation is frustrating, particularly on the weekends. We waited 2 hours for 2 pool chairs on a Sunday and an hour on Saturday. The pool area is tiny and crowded with lovely succulents and planters. They have expanded the restaurant into an area that could be used for pool chairs when it is weekend busy. There were very few guests dining in that area during main pool hours. Many people at the pool were not guests. Kids were occupying chairs that could have been used for adults. So many kids splashing in the pool on the weekend. We ended up using a succulent planter to hold our pool bag and shoes so we could still enjoy the pool during our 2 hour wait for a pool chair. The staff is amazing and friendly other than the servers at the pool where service suffers especially when it is busy. You have to seek out the pool servers or they ignore you especially on weekends. Great location and very walkable to the beach and shopping.

I loved this hotel! Probably the best hotel I’ve stayed in. Would definitely return!

Well located hotel perfectly positioned 10 mins walk to Santa Monica beach and pier, shopping area and restaurants. The hotel is beautifully designed and its decor is trendy, with lots of chilled public spaces which shout chillax in every area. Weekends turn the roof top bar into a lovely vibrant, trendy and chilled meeting place. Top interior design shines through. The staff at the main desk were helpful and lovely, as were the restaurant team. Room was beatifully appointed. Airy and spacious with lovely modern bathroom, stocked fridge, plenty of device charging (including USB-C…thank you!), huge TV and welcoming decor. The gym is excellent - even with a reformer Pilates machine and Zwift static bike. Final shout to the parking valet team, always quick and helpful. We won’t visit often as we’re UK based, however we have already booked again for one night before we head to Coachella Festival next April. Thank you Armando and the team!

Very nice hotel. Room was clean and quiet. Shower was fabulous. Food and drinks were great but pricey (cocktails approx $25 each). Breakfast was excellent, also very $$$. Loved the rooftop bar and restaurant. The pool and pool deck are too small for this size of hotel, there were often not enough places to sit and the small pool area means that all lounge chairs are jammed in like sardines next to each other. Too many kids at the pool and at breakfast. Would love if this place could become adults-only. Johnny (server at the pool) was lovely. We had an issue with getting a table in the rooftop restaurant for dinner (hostess seemed overwhelmed and disorganized) but manager helped to get us situated at a table. Called front desk from our room one night around midnight to ask a question, tried twice, no answer either time.

The Santa Monica Proper is a fantastic hotel! Beautiful, great location and wonderful, helpful staff. We booked a three bedroom family unit our three generation stay and it was perfect. One of the best hotel experiences I have had. Can't wait to return.
