Located in the heart of Savannah's charming Historic District is the remarkable antebellum retreat of Hamilton-Turner Inn. Built in the early 1870s, this Georgia gem shares a plum parcel of land along Lafayette Square with such notable neighbors as the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, as well as a bevy of historic homes. The mansion was originally built for a wealthy jeweler and more recently served as a backdrop for Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The home was also one of the first in Savannah to have electricity.

We were very impressed with the property at first glance, both outside and inside. The interior design was superb and made a wonderful first impression. After spending a few hours at the Inn, however, I began to notice some cleanliness issues. While the main surfaces appeared to be kept up reasonably well, a closer look revealed dust and debris under furniture, on the hardwood floors, on the dining room rugs, and behind open doors. While sitting in a side chair in our room, the light from the window revealed a dusty and dirty wooden bed rail, as well as a dusty floor under the bedside chest. I also had to retrieve something that had fallen under the bed, and I was surprised to find what looked like about an inch of dust on the area rug underneath. It was very obvious where the vacuum had stopped and could not reach, which was quite unpleasant. The bathrooms were decent overall, but there was hair and debris around the vanity sink legs. The toilet also had a ring in it that did not come off when I tested to see whether it could simply be wiped clean. We did enjoy the daily evening wine and hors d’oeuvres, although on two of the four days we were there, they were put out late. The fresh cookies each day were delicious, and we appreciated being able to ask for a soda. The staff were very friendly, and we especially enjoyed our breakfast server, though it would have been nice if his hair had been kept out of his eyes during service. After our first night, our room was not tended to, so we made sure to put out the “make up room” sign on the following days. We also noticed that some of the furniture in the parlor is beginning to show wear, particularly on the arms. Overall, the Inn has beautiful design and a welcoming atmosphere, but it would benefit greatly from a much deeper level of cleaning and a bit more attention to maintenance and housekeeping details. And, please polish the silver!!

How many times in your life will you visit Savannah? If you’re lucky enough to stay even one night at The Hamilton Turner Inn you’ll experience the loveliest grand Savannah house on a beautiful Savannah square, and all the comfort and style of southern hospitality. The house is a jewel box, the windows and decor are gently historic but beautifully bright and comfortable. Beds are perfectly cozy, the breakfast is so delicious. This Inn is really a dream. It’s not a small thing to say that the friendly employees, every single one of them, made us feel very welcome. Wish we could have stayed much longer. It’s a really perfect place.

Wonderful time at the Hamilton Turner. Loved the Oglethorpe Room: Large, sitting room, fireplace, lovely light in the afternoon. Staff was attentive/nice. Breakfast was good. Central location.

From the moment we arrived we were greeted by friendly, helpful people. We didn’t know where to park, so Tre walked outside, down to the corner and found a place that did not have a meter so that we wouldn’t need to put money in at 8:00 AM. Next, we were met by Nathan. He told us about the wonderful amenities: 5-6 PM wine with very good quality and tasty hors d'oeuvres in the dining room, then 8-10 PM delicious port and cookies in the living room, and a full breakfast from 7:30-10:30 AM in the morning in the dining room. Everywhere there were sweet chocolate treats for the taking too. Everyone was very attentive to my gluten intolerance dietary issue and made me feel very comfortable. Every image on the site is exactly what you get. It’s a beautiful place with beautiful, sincerely nice people, in a beautiful historic neighborhood and walking distance to many great restaurants. Plus, we had an incredibly fun time talking and getting to know 3 of the other nice guests while enjoying our port and cookies in the gorgeous sitting room. It was Old fashion socialization at its finest. Such a treat not found in hotel environments. Our room was lovely. All the linens were luxurious, the shower was modern, attractive and spacious. The room was clean, bright and nicely appointed. I hate to bring this up since everything g else was so wonderful…the only negative issue was the mattress was not good - way too soft. My husband and I ended up rolling into the center and waking each other up all night long. We’re not very big people either and sleep in a queen-sized bed at home. So, that was not fun. It was in the Julie Scarborough room 503 in the carriage house.

I expected much more of our stay, considering the price paid, and reputation of the property. Some of the staff was aloof and consistently yessed us without any action. But, some positives first- The property is generally clean (in the common areas anyway) and well maintained. Afternoon snacks and evening wine and cheese were nice touches. The location is great and about equidistant from Forsyth Park and the Riverfront. You can walk to just about anywhere in the historic district. The housekeeping in our room was absolutely atrocious and inexcusable for what we paid for our room. Upon checking into our "clean" room, there was a half drank bottle and used glasses on our parlor table. We reported it, and left our bags and explored Savannah for the rest of the day. Upon returning, we noticed significant lapses beyond just the dirty glasses. The previous guests soap and shampoo was still in our "cleaned" shower. And, get this....The previous guests' DIRTY SOCKS were left in the wardrobe. And, though I can't be sure, our bed that night seemed to smell of another person's cologne, as if the bed was simply made but the sheets not washed. The next morning, I reported all of these housekeeping deficiencies to the manager on duty. They personally assured me that they would see to a thorough cleaning of the room. Content that this would be true, we left for the day and returned about 8pm that evening... Not only had those issues not been tended to, but our room was not serviced at all!!! Unmade bed, dirty sheets and all of the issues that persisted from the day we checked in were still there two days later. Now, wouldn't an Inn with this reputation and a customer complaint about the housekeeping make absolutely certain that this guests' room was serviced and cleaned from top to bottom? Other, more minor cleanliness issues: dust and cobwebs on the chandeliers and window treatments, mildew in the shower, stained throw and couch pillows. This was truly a disappointing stay, and we will not return. Maybe they were just having an off week, but that shouldn't be to the neglect of the guest. There are so many wonderful b&b's and Inns in Savannah. Stay somewhere else.

My husband and I spent our wedding anniversary in Savannah at The Hamilton-Turner Inn, where the staff made us feel completely at home. Since both my husband and I are cooks, we thoroughly enjoyed the excellent cuisine! I would highly recommend this wonderful inn.
