Beautiful Hotel Marred by Consistently Poor Service and Language Barriers

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

I recently stayed at the hotel and found the location and room quality to be excellent. However, my experience was significantly undermined by a series of service failures that I feel are unacceptable for a hotel of this caliber and price point. The issues were consistent across multiple departments: · Regent Club: Upon arrival for happy hour, I was not attended to. When I finally placed an order, the staff member did not understand English and my drink never arrived. I was also never offered a menu. · Business Center: Staff were unable to assist me due to a language barrier. · Camelia Restaurant: Despite the restaurant being empty and fully staffed, it took 20 minutes to receive a drink. · In-Room Dining: An order for ice cream required multiple calls due to a misunderstanding and arrived completely melted. I brought these concerns to the Duty Manager, Robin, who explained that staff only speak "very basic English." While I do not expect universal fluency, I believe an international luxury hotel should have at least one proficient English speaker available in each key department (room service, club lounge, restaurants) to ensure a minimum standard of service for international guests. Unfortunately, due to these persistent issues, I cannot recommend this hotel for travelers who expect service commensurate with the price.

Beautiful Hotel with Stunning Views — But Skip Dinner

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

I recently stayed at the Regent Shanghai Pudong and was very impressed overall. The highlight for me was definitely the incredible views — floor-to-ceiling windows showcase the skyline and make the city feel right at your doorstep. The location in Lujiazui is also perfect, close to the metro and major attractions. The rooms are spacious, elegant, and very comfortable, with great bathrooms and thoughtful touches. The hotel’s amenities are excellent too — the rooftop infinity pool and fitness facilities are a real standout. Though do remember to bring a swimming cap with you. It’s compulsory here. Breakfast was consistently good, with a wide variety of Asian and Western options and attentive service. It’s a great way to start the day. The only downside was dinner. I found the restaurants overpriced and underwhelming compared to the hotel’s otherwise high standards. If you want a memorable meal, I’d recommend exploring the many excellent dining options nearby instead.

Regent Shanghai Pudong: Fails to Deliver on Service Promises

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

My stay at the Regent Shanghai Pudong was very disappointing. I had made a floor preference request well in advance, and even called the hotel again on the morning of my arrival to reconfirm. However, when I checked in that afternoon, the staff repeatedly gave me inconsistent excuses: first claiming no rooms were available, then saying that rooms on the 35th or 39th floor would become available the next day and could be prioritized for me. Yet on the following day, the hotel only reached out around 4:00 p.m., at which point they changed their story again-saying no guests had checked out from the 35th floor, and that the 39th floor consisted of special room types that could not be provided. Throughout the process, the hotel's shifting explanations and contradictory responses made it clear that my reasonable request was not taken seriously, and I was left with the impression that the staff were simply being perfunctory rather than genuinely attentive to guests' needs.

Seems not family friendly

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

I booked one night through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR). The rate was comparable to the nearby Waldorf, but notably higher than Shangri-La and Conrad. The hotel's hardware is solid, but the service noticeably lags behind those three. Parking costs ¥120 per night and does not count toward the FHR $100 experience credit. Breakfast for two was included via FHR, but no complimentary breakfast was offered for my children—despite my IHG Diamond status. There was no Diamond recognition at all: no room upgrade, no Club Lounge access, and no family-friendly consideration, though IHG points was accumulated. Judging from the empty Shangxi(尚席) restaurant during our lunch the next day, it didn’t seem like the hotel was full. Perhaps this property is more suitable for business travelers than for families like mine. For similar or even better pricing, the three FHRs: Waldorf, Shangri-La, and Conrad clearly deliver a much higher level of service and warmth.
