I had always avoided Park Hyatt because they don’t have an executive lounge. I decided to give it shot after discovering the appearance of a “Park Salon”, which was supposed to be an executive lounge equivalent. Located in the iconic SWFC, the location of the hotel was not the most convenient. From Lujiazui station, it required a 20-minute walk through IFC mall and onto the overhead pedestrian bridge which was largely unsheltered. Entering the SWFC from the overhead bridge it required a series of twist and turns through the mall and office space before reaching a very secluded ground floor lift lobby. From there it was a direct ride to the check in reception on the 87th floor. No doubt a hassle, but together with effective security, the hotel felt serene and protected. Aside from hotel guests, it was almost impossible for outsiders to loiter at the lobby. The room was decorated in very understated style, but everything expected from a top range 5-star hotel was provided. I appreciate the movement-sensitive light switches which lighted up when it detected movement. The room was very quiet and the almost lack of sound from the air conditioning was very impressive. The room was supposed to have stunning view of the Pearl Tower and bund. It did, but due to the height of the hotel and low hanging clouds, the room was surrounded by clouds most of the time. Some would be disappointed with nothing visible outside the window at most times. Housekeeping and turndown services were delivered quickly, effectively and unobtrusively. This reflected the general high level of pro-active service standard in the hotel from the security, check in, gym, breakfast and Salon staff. They were often eager to help even without needing to ask. I lost my way a few times on the way to the Salon and random staff approached to take me there. The gym was rather small and became well-occupied after 6am in the morning. But amenities were well stocked and equipment was new. The salon was the highlight of my stay. It operated from 11am to 8pm and delivered quality in every possible way. An elaborate selection of spirits and quality wines were available at all times (not just happy hour). Amonst which there were two choices of champagnes, of which one is a Blanc de Blanc, which is astounding for an executive lounge to offer. There were some fruit and pastries available all day with hot dishes provided from 5:30pm to 730pm. The dishes delivered during happy hour were good quality and varied every night. It also was nice to come back for a champagne break before going out again. Staff led by Miranda Wang at the salon was top notch. They quietly replaced my napkin three times with a span of two hours and made sure my drinks were never empty. They remember what I liked and were very gracious to invite guests to try their snacks, pastries as well as dishes when happy hour starts. Unlike the Ritz that advises guests to self-serve everything, they made sure that all guests were well-served and comfortable. This wa by far one of the best lounges I have been to, and definitely value for money, even at the price of the rooms that the hotel is charging. On the downside, the hotel seems to be trying to figure out what it wants to do, considering that Park Hyatt does not usually provide an executive lounge worldwide. I booked the room from Hyatt website directly but discovered later that the promised Salon and breakfast service published on the web was not reflected in my booking. I emailed the hotel and in my following communication with them, discovered that the terms of booking were unilaterally changed, with the provision of breakfast offered and then retracted twice. An ‘Irene from Revenue’ was especially frustrating to deal with. Luckily, I made a screen shot of the hotel web when I booked which clearly included the provision of the breakfast, and it was eventually restored but only after discussions when I arrived. The provision of an executive lounge service that comes with a breakfast service should have been an industry no-brainer, so I am not sure why the hotel chose to split hair over it. As a customer, it is unsettling for a hotel to change the terms after booking and not being transparent about it. And they were not so pro-active in restoring promised terms after that. This is unbecoming of any business, let alone a supposedly top of the range hotel chain. I could be lucky just this time, so I am not sure if I want to come back again. And should they decide not to keep the Salon in future, I will skip the hotel without a second thought. Overall: 4-star for what should have been a 5 star plus stay.

As a high end property, it’s not merely about the beddings and food. The customer service and anticipation of the needs are equally important.PH staff from restaurants to front desk, all are empowered to make decisions to improve your experience. The swimming pool was closed during our stay, they helped arrange swimming pool use at nearby Regent hotel especially as they learnt that my kid is preparing for swim meet. They recommended that regent hotel may have a longer pool for lap swim. The breakfast staff members are as attentive. From espresso to a la cart order, they did best to anticipate the needs.
