Reviews for The Peninsula Shanghai

Disappointed

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

The air conditioning is not good - can’t imagine how awful it must be in summer as it was too warm in springtime. While breakfast is nice, the service is abysmal. If guests are unable to serve coffee and juice for themselves, then you need to serve them promptly. To be perfectly honest, this hotel was poor quality when compared to peninsula hotels elsewhere and is overpriced for what you get.

Don't do it

Spent 3 days here and I've got to say I was disappointed to say the least, I had high expectations and they didn't meet many of them. Location- met, great location. Service- missed the mark, 3 days had 4 meals and drinks at the bars and the service was lacking in each instance. Had to remind the staff several times at Breakfast to bring coffee and then again for water. To get an additional drink in the bar lounge you'd have to walk to bar to order. Food- at the breakfast buffet and the standard menu nothing exciting. Front desk- not accommodating at all, I asked for a paid upgrade to a bund view only to be told nothing was available but when checked online next morning rooms were available. Room- Room was very nice definately hit the mark. Housekeeping- exceptional, Went out of their way to wash my cloths. This was the only service experience that blew away my expectations. My biggest problem with the hotel was the lack of staff that spoke english, 3 in 10 spoke english. If you're American I can't stress enough to book an American Brand hotel, Ritz, St regis, Park Hyatt, Four seasons, Rosewood etc, you name it. Since covid the english speaking people fled the country and it was very apparent. If you speak Chinese this hotel would be a much easier fit. I would never go back because it was so difficult to communicate. This hotel is a status statement doesn't even compare to a four seasons but they do have great door openers in the lobby. concierge was excellent, spoke perfect english.

As good as it gets…

As perfect as a hotel can get! It’s hard finding the perfect hotel. Often just a single interaction with staff can make or break a hotel experience. The peninsula provided us with many many pleasant memories (a special flower request fulfilled, great breakfast with combined buffet and a la carte, lovely toiletries, amazing pool/sauna/jacuzzi/dressing room, a live classical ensemble, Mozart for breakfast, a quiet elevator without a tinny background drum beat and an unbelievable bedroom view of the Bund) and only the slightest of grumbles (coffee cups for drinking tea, no scissors in the room, and no! can’t get to three grumbles as hard as I try!) We are a family with a teenager and a drifting 30 something and we wanted to see a bit of Shanghai. Being in the older age group my husband and I need a bit of rest. Thank you Shanghai Penninsula! (I can’t mention one staff name- they were all superb).

Best hotel in Shanghai

Best hotel in Shanghai. I stayed with my family over the holidays. They have the best blackout curtains of any hotel, no light peeping at all. We ended up oversleeping everyday. And very functional room, we actually used the other furniture like the office desk and sofa. Rooms were clean and modern despite not being renovated. Pretty great condition. And terrific concierge, the only ones in my entire trip that smiled. Hats off to ricci and danny. Really top notch service that beat all the other hotels we stayed at in china.

Great service, clean room and delicious restaurants!

I booked a room with river view and they upgraded it to a suite! Of course view is significant, also they have great service either from front desk and restaurant, it’s a pleasant stay and I’ll definitely stay with it again if I come to Shanghai!
