Where the ancient squarely meets the modern, and western reality blends with eastern fantasy, China is an enchanting land offering among the most vibrant enclaves on earth. While it's easy to lose yourself in its and fascinating history, the country's contemporary face is equally enthralling. Located along the famed Huangpu River, Pudong Shangri-La lives up to its luxury reputation in personalized service, modern amenities, the city's most spacious guestrooms, and breathtaking views of Shanghai's legendary waterfront. Brilliant examples of French and British architecture remain in the old French Concession. For glimpses of what the country was like thousands of years ago, visit the Old Chinese City. At The Shanghai Museum, the bronze collection is reputedly the best in the world.

I stayed one night at the Pudong Shangri-La, Shanghai (28–29 August 2026), using a points redemption made against a room rate of approximately RMB 1,300 per night. Given the positioning of the brand, I had expected a fairly consistent experience; in practice, the stay fell short in several respects, which I would like to share for the benefit of other travellers. Service No turndown service was provided that evening. In the guest floors and public areas, staff generally did not offer the sort of proactive greeting one would typically associate with a hotel of this category, and in one interaction I observed conduct that appeared to include an eye-roll. On the whole, the level of service I encountered did not feel aligned with what the Shangri-La brand is usually understood to represent. Safety – the point I found most concerning When I inserted a plug into the bedside power socket, a clearly visible blue electrical arc was emitted at the moment of contact. This goes beyond the ordinary wear-and-tear one might reasonably accept in an older room: an event of this kind carries a genuine risk of electric shock, damage to guest equipment and, in the worst case, fire. For a room actively being sold to guests, this raised legitimate questions in my mind about the frequency and thoroughness of the hotel's in-room safety checks. Cleanliness There was visible dust accumulation in the room, and basic surfaces such as mirrors had not been properly cleaned. The most striking issue was the in-room coffee machine, which dispensed an unidentified brown liquid of unclear origin that I did not feel comfortable using. Ageing fixtures are understandable; hygiene shortcomings of this nature are more difficult to overlook. Value Even taking into account that the stay was settled through points, the effective value of the redemption sat at around RMB 1,300 per night. Measured against the standard of service, safety and cleanliness one would ordinarily expect at that price point, the experience did not, in my view, match the value exchanged. In this segment in Pudong, and even with a modest adjustment in budget, there are a number of alternative properties that, based on general reputation, tend to deliver a more consistent experience; travellers may wish to consider those options before defaulting to this hotel. A note on the scope of this review Everything above reflects my personal, first-hand experience during this specific stay. The conduct of individual staff members should not be taken as representative of the broader team, and impressions of service are inevitably subjective; my comments should therefore not be read as an objective assessment of the hotel's overall service standard. Similarly, the observations regarding room condition and hygiene relate only to the specific room I occupied that night and should not be assumed to apply to other rooms in the property. That said, based on this particular experience, I would not personally choose to stay at the Pudong Shangri-La again. Suggested rating: 2/5 – Poor. The score reflects the location and the underlying quality of the building itself; considered purely on the merits of this one stay, a lower rating would also have been reasonable.

This was our second time staying at a Shangri-La, and it certainly did not disappoint! We previously stayed at the Shangri-La in Singapore three years ago, and this time we stayed at the Shanghai property. The hotel is beautiful, clean, spacious, and incredibly well located. It is close to the Oriental Pearl Tower and on the quieter side of the Bund, making it a lovely location for exploring the area and enjoying the boat trips along the Bund. After a busy day out, it was always a pleasure to return to the hotel. Our room was lovely and spacious, and the overall atmosphere was very comfortable. The staff were generally friendly, although we felt the service in the Singapore branch was slightly better. That said, the breakfast staff were exceptional. We had specific dietary requirements, and the breakfast team went above and beyond to help us. They personally walked us around to explain the different options, brought in the chef to speak with us, and gave us advice on what would be suitable. They were genuinely so kind and accommodating, which we really appreciated. The hotel was also very kind in allowing us to keep our dietary food in their fridge, as the fridge in our room was more of a cool box than a proper fridge. Overall, we had a wonderful stay. The incredible location, beautiful spacious rooms, and the kindness of the breakfast team made it a pleasure to stay here. We would definitely consider returning to Shangri-La again!
