Reviews for Wanda Reign on the Bund

Very weak service experience for a hotel carrying the St. Regis name

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

The St. Regis on the Bund, Shanghai has a classic luxury interior, with the traditional design language usually associated with the St. Regis brand. The room also follows this classic style, with elegant details and a more formal luxury-hotel atmosphere. Guests who appreciate traditional interiors may like it. However, this is probably not the best hotel for travelers who prefer modern, minimalist, or contemporary design. The location is generally good. The hotel is on the Bund, which is one of Shanghai’s most prestigious and iconic areas. The surroundings feel refined, and the hotel is well positioned for guests who want to experience the Bund atmosphere. That said, it is still slightly removed from some of the main tourist attractions, so it may not be the most convenient choice for every sightseeing itinerary. Unfortunately, the main issue was the service, which for me is the most important part of any luxury hotel experience. We stayed at the hotel for only about 8 hours. We checked in at around 11:00 PM on May 16 and left for the airport at around 7:00 AM the next morning. This was the final night of our China–Japan trip. Before traveling to Japan, we had stayed for three nights at The Ritz-Carlton Pudong, and for our last night in Shanghai we wanted to try another high-level hotel because of the strong reviews and reputation of The St. Regis. The poor service experience started at check-in. We were given a room on the 16th floor with a blocked view. We had not booked a Bund-view room, but we had booked a room with a view, and our booking did not say that the view would be obstructed. In my opinion, the room we received did not correspond to the room type we had reserved. The staff member offered a paid upgrade as a solution. However, we explained that we were staying for only 8 hours. In this situation, I believe the hotel should have handled the matter more professionally. If there was no suitable room with a proper view available, and if the hotel knew we were leaving early the next morning, a complimentary upgrade or another fair solution would have been a much more appropriate response for a luxury hotel of this level. After check-in, we decided to walk around and see the hotel. We first tried to enter the lounge near the lobby, but it was closed because of a private event. We were not even allowed to look inside properly. Then we tried to go to the rooftop terrace. There was also an event there, and we were stopped again. I explained that I was a hotel guest and only wanted to see the view briefly, especially since the rooftop view is one of the features the hotel promotes. The staff were reluctant to allow access. Eventually, after insisting, I was allowed to briefly enter and see the view. This situation was extremely disappointing. A hotel guest should not feel unwelcome in key areas of the property, especially when staying at a luxury hotel and especially when the hotel promotes these spaces as part of its identity. These service issues completely reduced the value of the hotel for us. The interior and brand name may be impressive, but the actual guest experience did not match the standards I associate with St. Regis. To be fair, at check-out, two staff members noticed our dissatisfaction. They gave us small gifts and promised to improve the experience during a future visit. I appreciate their attitude and their attempt to respond politely. However, this will only matter if we decide to return in the future. For this stay, the experience had already been seriously damaged. A hotel like St. Regis should not allow poor front-desk decisions, lack of guest-oriented solutions, or private-event management to damage the trust that the brand has built over many years around the world. Guests choose this brand because they expect a high standard of service, not only beautiful interiors. Overall, our experience at The St. Regis on the Bund, Shanghai was very weak and far below expectations.

I'm a St Regis convert

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Great location, beautifully decorated, great service, huge super comfortable bedrooms, delicious breakfasts..... I am now a convert to St Regis brand. I had booked 2 deluxe rooms. I asked for a high floor and was kindly given just high enough for a lovely view over the River. The room itself is faultless. It's huge, beautifully decorated with every comfort, I particularly loved lounging on the canapé looking out, especially at night... if I didn't want to visit Shanghai, I could have stayed there all day. I had advised them I was celebrating my birthday during the stay and they had arranged balloons, a small cake, fruit, a bottle of wine and card, very thoughtful and generous. St Regis offers a 'butler service', never used before but found it super helpful as the butler helps you with anything, just connect to their 'weChat' (like WhatsApp) and they will answer anything you need ... no need to go down to Concierge such as restaurant recommendations etc. Although you have Nespresso & tea making facilities in the room, the butler will bring you a cappuccino (included in room rate), with some delicious little biscuits. And, we were given complimentary Afternoon Tea.... not to be missed! Every evening St Regis do a 'champagne sabering' in the lobby then share out the champagne. On our last night which was my actual birthday, I got to do it... a fun experience indeed! On returning to our room that night, they had placed the sliced champagne top in a box with a photo in a frame of my holding the sabre & bottle... perfect ending to a fabulous stay. And just to mention.. the rooftop bar & restaurant is superb with stunning views, especially by night of Pudong opposite, buffet breakfasts offer so much variety, all excellent quality and of course all the staff were wonderful. A very happy, comfortable and memorable stay. With all the little generous touches, it felt very personal which is not something one can often say about a big brand hotel.

#1 in service in all St. Regis Properties across the globe

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

WOW. St. Regis on the Bund blew us away and now rivals our other favorite properties of St Regis Florence Italy and St Regis Bali as being #1. The property is modern and clean and presents nothing but a heightened sense of luxury. The rooms are immaculately adorned and the views of the skyline cannot be beat. The breakfast- both service and food, was the best in 100 nights of Marriott properties so far this year. Gym was good. Dinner at Spago was delicious. Perhaps where this property stands out most though is the service. A whole team checked us in upon arrival. Every single person always greeted us and offered to help. There are too many hard working people to name but Alice at breakfast, Cindy at dinner. Derrick Hu is the coolest St. Regis employee we have met and elevated our experience. The most impressive was Kimmy Li, the director of rooms who really made our whole vacation beyond our stay in Shanghai. She met with us from the beginning, checked in with my wife on WeChat during our stay, and even coordinated with other properties we were moving to next, where the room was specially prepared for us. Kimmy is the reason we will always try to pick the St. Regis brand above others and she would make an awesome GM or leadership position in corporate.

Christina Wang Made All The Difference In Our Stay At St. Regis On The Bund :)

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We arrived at The St. Regis on the Bund for our first experience in China, and it could not have been more memorable. We were wonderfully surprised to learn that Christina Wang had been advised in advance of our trip and was prepared to look after our needs upon arrival. To our unexpected delight, she booked us into a premier suite overlooking the light show on the Bund. While our suite was being prepared, the staff treated us to tea and pastries, which was such a thoughtful welcome. The luxury suite turned out to be an unexpected blessing, especially since we had a sick day and were also adjusting to the cold weather. We are so thankful to Christina for making our stay so special through her attention to detail, warm hospitality, and outstanding customer service.

The St. Regis Shanghai on the Bund

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

I stayed at The St. Regis Shanghai on the Bund and it immediately stood out as one of the most luxurious hotels in the city. Everything about the property — from the grand entrance to the refined interiors — signals a top‑tier, ultra‑premium experience. The hotel leans heavily into a classic, almost old‑world aesthetic, with antique‑inspired décor, curated artworks, and a sense of heritage that sets it apart from the more modern luxury hotels in Shanghai. It feels elegant in a way that’s deliberate and deeply atmospheric. The river views are a highlight. Many rooms and public spaces look directly onto the Huangpu River, offering sweeping panoramas of the water and the skyline beyond. Watching the boats drift by and the city lights shimmer at night adds a sense of calm and grandeur to the stay — the kind of view that reminds you why the Bund remains one of Shanghai’s most iconic locations. Service at the St. Regis is exceptional, exactly what you’d expect from the brand. Staff are polished, attentive, and genuinely warm, with a level of professionalism that feels both personal and effortless. The butler service, in particular, reinforces the hotel’s luxury positioning and makes the stay feel tailored and elevated. It’s also clear that the hotel is very comfortable hosting international travelers — English is widely spoken, and the service style is globally oriented, making the experience smooth and intuitive for foreign guests. The hotel’s classic design and extensive collection of traditional art pieces give it a distinctive personality. Instead of the sleek minimalism common in newer properties, the St. Regis embraces a more historic, museum‑like charm. The result is a stay that feels cultured, refined, and rooted in a sense of timeless luxury. Overall, The St. Regis Shanghai on the Bund delivers a super‑luxury experience with exceptional service, stunning river views, and a rich, art‑filled atmosphere. For travelers who appreciate heritage‑style elegance and world‑class hospitality — especially international guests — it’s one of the most memorable and distinguished places to stay in Shanghai.
