The website oversells this hotel, and is inaccurate regarding eating options and arrangements. Both sinks in our room were blocked and unusable - staff couldn’t clear them and couldn’t move us since no spare rooms. Sheets on the bed were very creased (hope they had been changed) - towels for toilet basin definitely hadn’t since they were all screwed up and in a pile. Breakfast was very sub standard. Buffet with luke warm food and cold plates. To be fair the Spa was pretty good. Final disappointment was the complete lack of concern when we checked out - we repeatedly asked the staff member to ensure that the plumbing was sorted out for the next guests, but got no response other than ‘I don’t know what to say’. Avoid.

We stayed at Charlton House Hotel for a spa weekend. Had a couples massage & were shocked at the unprofessionalism of the two female masseuse. Instead of a calming experience the two girls couldn’t stop giggling, even when they were outside the door while we redressed! We’re well-travelled & never experienced anything like this. The spa facilities themselves were actually nice, lovely steam room & pool temp, but the massage was the first thing we did after check-in, so it tainted the rest of the experience. Our bedroom was cosy & quirky, a comfy bed. But an office-style Venetian blind didn’t block the light at all (photo below) so we struggled to sleep after sunrise. Basic curtains would do the job & be more in keeping with the period style they were aiming for. The breakfast was low quality, other guests commented on “the greyest eggs they’d ever seen” & the sausages looked cheap. Breakfast tea was make-your-own from a thermos of hot water & packeted tea bags. Not the end of the world but a reflection of the overall quality they have opted for. I emailed a complaint about what happened at the spa the same day & a week later no reply. I phoned to get the details for the manager but was told the spa manager was “away for a while in Bali” so I requested the hotel manager’s email. I got that address but another week later and still no reply from them either! I have given them an opportunity to apologise before posting a public review.

We recently stayed at Montigo Resorts Somerset (Charlton House) from 10–11 March 2026 for my fiancé’s birthday, and unfortunately our experience was very mixed. I want to start with the positives, as there were some. The gentleman on reception and the spa staff were absolutely wonderful—friendly, welcoming, and genuinely helpful. The building itself is also beautiful and full of character, which we really appreciated. However, overall the stay did not meet expectations for a four-star hotel, especially given this was booked as a special occasion. Before arriving, communication was poor. I emailed in advance to confirm what was included in our Wowcher booking and was told dinner was included, only to later find out (the day before arrival, after calling) that it was actually a £20 per person allowance. This should have been clearly explained from the outset. The spa facilities were enjoyable, but there were practical issues—limited seating and bugs in the indoor/outdoor pool that didn’t appear to be cleared regularly. Dinner service was disappointing. The restaurant appeared to be run by very young staff who, while polite, were not attentive. We weren’t offered a drinks menu at all, and water was poured into wine glasses due to a lack of proper glassware on the table. Food portions were also quite small for what was described as a main meal. Room service was particularly poor value for money. A £10 cocktail arrived lukewarm in a plastic pint cup with no ice or garnish, and a £15 burger came on its own in a cardboard box with no fries or sides. This felt far below the standard expected. Breakfast the next morning was also underwhelming, with buffet items that were barely warm and not fresh. Overall, while there are some lovely staff and the setting has great potential, the experience did not feel in line with a four-star hotel. Given this was a special birthday stay, it was quite disappointing. I did contact the hotel directly a number of times before leaving this review but unfortunately did not receive a response.

Fantastic hotel and spa. We absolutely loved it. I took my sister and my mum as a treat for the weekend. The staff were lovely, the facilities were clean and well managed and the setting was beautiful. We couldn’t ask for more.
