About the Hotel

The Grand Hotel Royal, member of Alberghi Storici d'Italia (Historic Hotels of Italy), is five-star estate in the heart of Sorrento, perched over the sea in a privileged location overlooking the Gulf of Naples and the Mount Vesuvius, surrounded by a large park boasting exotic plants, amazing camellias, orange and lemon trees. A little bit of history - Between the two wars, the hotel welcomed the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Italy, Francesco Saverio Nitti. Built in 1898, this was the hotel for the aristocracy who flocked from all over Europe to enjoy the grand gala evenings on the terrace high above the sea, with the Gulf of Naples stretched out before them.

Reviews for Grand Hotel Royal

Stunning location and beautifully decorated hotel showcasing Sorrento - service very sub par for a 5 star hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

The location is unbeatable - clean rooms - great breakfast and a couple of the staff went out of their way to make you feel welcome and included - Samuel in the restaurant stands out as does the pool Attendant who were both conscious of how you felt as a guest - however that’s where the service limit stops - the Majority of staff look very stressed and do not acknowledge you as to the levels that you would expect for 5 star - it would appreciate many do not like to work for the hotel - and this comes across to you as the guest - we unfortunately had issues with overcharging in certain items and it took some time to resolve these - the hotel is popular for weddings - if you have one when you stay - you will lose most of your facilities to the wedding as that clearly is a priority for the hotel and they do not have separate function space - so the wedding ceremony and reception takes over all of the hotels main hospitality areas and remaining guests are limited and restricted in the hotels restaurant facilities available. The restricted hours for both the closure of the “beach sundeck” at 6pm and the pool for swimming at 6.30pm is simply just wrong - in summer when the sun does not even set until 8.30plus it seems crazy to close that facility to your guests at such an early hour . In summary you’ll pay for the location and that is delightful but it is expensive and unfortunately the hospitality service fails to meet the five star standard. If you complain or raise issue - you are then made to feel uncomfortable for the balance Of your stay an in some instances ignored. The room amenity is not up to full five star standard - instant coffee and basic tea with a kettle in a prestige view room is just not meeting modern standards - turn down is nice in that they refresh the towels - however housekeeping need to learn a proper turn down service for the room - housekeepers are extremely loud early in the morning - we even had two arguing with each other on 18th May - with one running past us muttering - not a great standard again for it to be actually five stars - the premium is just not worth it if you look for service standard and not only the beautiful setting.

Beautiful in every way

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

My husband and I and brother and sister in law along with my 93 year old mother spent a week at this glorious hotel. From the minute we walked in the hotel, we were welcomed. We arrived prior to the check in time due to an early flight but the staff made us very comfortable in the bar area with cappuccinos and sweets. The grounds are beautifully kept with lemon and orange trees and a variety of flowering trees. The rooms are spacious and the bathroom has a walk in shower. The staff was exceptional from Mario, Ermina, and Gianluca at the reception to Salvatore and the wait staff in the restaurant and bar. Salvatore was the King of the Martini according to my Mom and made a fabulous cocktail. The pool staff and the housekeeping staff were very accommodating. The hotel is well appointed and very clean. We will be back again.

A Trek to Pay Before You Consume

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

We called in here to have an early evening drink on the terrace. There is no minimum spend, but you will be required to pay for your drinks before you receive them (if you are non-resident). No problem - except you have to trek across the terrace, up the stairs into the hotel, through the bar, through the hotel to Reception to pay!! Extraordinary experience. Took the shine off what should have been a relaxed & leisurely time admiring the view. Surely a card machine could be provided in the bar at the very least?! Needless to say, we only stayed for one round!

Lovely hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Really lovely hotel, would thoroughly recommend. Visited as a family of 3 with our 14 year old son, they don't have interconnecting rooms but they guaranteed us rooms next door to each other so it was fine. We both had sea view rooms which was definitely worth it, balconies looked out over Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. The staff were very attentive and helpful, the terrace overlooking the sea was beautiful. Swimming pool was open, which was unexpected, very cold but in April it was expected as not heated. Breakfast every morning very good, concierge very helpful planning trips. Will be back....

Beautiful views and terrace, excellent service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Our family of four had a wonderful stay at the Grand Hotel Royal. The property itself is beautiful with a lovely terrace and gardens overlooking the sea, with plenty of seating - perfect for a drink while watching the sunset. We enjoyed nothing but top notch service, from the staff at the front desk to the servers on the terrace, everyone was warm, friendly and eager to help. The rooms are spacious and comfortable but the showers are rather awkward with a large step up and unfortunate shower head position. Despite that it was overall a really lovely stay and a perfect jumping off point for exploring the area!
