The Grand Hotel Royal, member of Alberghi Storici d'Italia (Historic Hotels of Italy), is five-star estate in the heart of Sorrento, perched over the sea in a privileged location overlooking the Gulf of Naples and the Mount Vesuvius, surrounded by a large park boasting exotic plants, amazing camellias, orange and lemon trees. A little bit of history - Between the two wars, the hotel welcomed the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Italy, Francesco Saverio Nitti. Built in 1898, this was the hotel for the aristocracy who flocked from all over Europe to enjoy the grand gala evenings on the terrace high above the sea, with the Gulf of Naples stretched out before them.

We stayed two nights at this hotel. Service is top notch. Breakfast buffet is in a very atmospheric dining room and was plentiful. Our garden room was comfortable. The shower is in a tub that was a little on the smaller size and one had to be careful stepping out of. The hallways are tiled so you do hear people walking or pulling suitcases. The hotel has a feel of sophistication and comfort. The grounds are gorgeous- there is a wonderful area to sit and order drinks with unmatched views of Mt Vesuvius. It is not in the city center so more quiet but is still walkable to most locations. Would recommend without reservation and would stay here again!

A beautiful hotel - I would thoroughly recommend staying here. We managed to get three nights here cheaper than the Hilton Sorrento Palace and this was much better. Beautiful terrace on the cliff, stunning grounds and rooms. A wonderful traditional Sorrento experience. Breakfast buffet served in an elegant dining room with attentive staff. Excellent Only negatives We were given a first floor room with a bad balcony when I had asked for a high floor room Please put a proper hairdryer in the room

I read the reviews on breakfast and my view is if you want sausages and bacon stay at home! Breakfast was great typical continental style and a lady cooks you an omelette what more do you want champagne ? Well they have that too!! Enjoyed our 3 night break immensely. Staff excellent, room maids amazing - they leave chocolate! Terrace and views beautiful with attentive staff who bring you drinks and snacks we honestly couldn’t have wished for more for our stay other than we should have booked for longer. So many places to see in the world but if we ever come back to Sorrento we are definitely staying here again

As a couple who consistently seeks out luxury properties, we choose our hotels with care and high expectations. While the Grand Royal Hotel has several strengths, our overall experience fell short of what a true 5‑star stay should deliver. ### 🌆 **What Impressed Us** - **Prime location:** Central, accessible, and ideal for exploring the area. - **Beautiful property:** Well maintained, visually impressive, and thoughtfully designed. - **Room aesthetics:** Although compact, our room was tastefully decorated with a calming colour palette and a stunning view of Mt Vesuvius. - **Spa experience:** The massages were genuinely wonderful — a highlight of our stay. ### 🍽️ **Where the Hotel Missed the Mark** - **Breakfast quality:** Surprisingly basic for a 5‑star property. - No additional hot options. - Sausages cut in half and resembling supermarket quality. - Very limited selection overall. This is an area that truly needs management’s attention. ### 🛎️ **Service Inconsistency** Service was inconsistent throughout our stay. - Things improved noticeably after speaking with the GM, Guisippe. - Mauro at Reception stood out for his attentiveness. Still, the overall service level did not meet the standard expected of a luxury hotel. Also please do not recommend restaurant Tasso to your hotel guests. The food served is poor and almost put me off linguine for life! ### ⭐ **Final Verdict** For the first time in a long while, we are unable to award a property five stars. The Grand Royal Hotel has strong potential — the setting, the design, and the spa are all commendable — but the service and breakfast offering need significant refinement to align with true 5‑star expectations.

This hotel is absolutely stunning. Rooms were spacious and bathroom was well appointed. I requested a room change and appreciated their immediate response. Definitely need a room overlooking the sea. It’s breathtaking. Just a short walk to tons of shops and restaurants and the train station.
