STAY AWAY: Thieves, Cobwebs, and Total Decay. This is NOT a Luxury Resort.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

I’m honestly shocked this place is still allowed to be part of the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts program. If you value your money or your safety, do not make the mistake of staying at The Ocean Club, Costa Norte. Your Valuables are NOT Safe Here While I was at a spa appointment—a time the hotel knew my room was empty—someone went through my backpack and took my credit and debit cards. They were physically used for fraudulent charges while I was getting a massage. The thieves actually put the cards back in my wallet afterward, but they were in the wrong order, so it was obvious someone had been rummaging through my personal stuff. The management’s response? A total joke. They "investigated" themselves and found no wrongdoing , and now they are harassing me for a $600 balance they forgot to charge because of their own "human error". They have zero financial integrity and clearly don't care about guest security. The Property is a Dump Calling this a "Luxury Collection" resort is a lie. The place is falling apart: Building Decay: The exterior of the resort is literally crumbling, with slats falling off the buildings. Safety Hazard: There was a terrifying smell of natural gas in my room when using the in-room dryer. Broken Gym: Don't bother with the fitness center; the equipment is broken, unusable, and covered in cobwebs. Bottom Line The staff cannot be trusted, the rooms are questionable, and the management is dismissive. I've already reported this nightmare to Marriott Corporate and Amex Travel. Save yourself the headache and the fraud alerts—stay somewhere else.

Terrible experience

During my stay 02/05/26 - 02/09/26it was extremely disappointing to say the least. At first glance this appears to be a very nice resort. Until I got into my room. While walking through the room it clearly was a little worn. Water damage was evident in the bathroom. A smell of mildew and sour smell. It appeared no attempt to fix the issues had been made. Ihad a garden view room so I decided to go out onto the patio to take a look around. The electric blind did not work. The blind would not raise from the lowered position. I went around the blind to access the patio and the approximately 8 foot metal bart hat rolls the blind up completely fell from the ceiling and hit me in the top of the head. After gathering myself I notified the front desk. I was told they would fix it the following day because it was later in the evening and it would take a while to repair it. No mention of putting me into a different room. That evening I turned on the shower and noticed water spraying and splashing all over the floor in the bathroom on both sides of the walk through shower. After looking up at the shower several of the small spray nozzles were missing. Water was splashing out of those holes. Water was also coming from somewhere on top of the shower head. So much water splashing that I had to put towels on the floor to attempt to keep the floor outside the shower dry. The blanket on the bed had a sour smell and stains that appeared to have never come out during the wash or it was never washed. The next morning I told management I would be leaving the room for a few hours so they could fix the issues. I later returned and the large blind was back up on the ceiling. I went to the remote to see if it would open. It did not open. Still not working. The following morning I attempted to go around the blind to the patio again the entire metal blind came crashing down on top of my head for the second time. After a few minutes of gathering myself I took a shower so I could go see management. Again the same damaged shower head completely wet the floor. I went to management again and explained it was the second time the blind fell from the ceiling and hit me in the head. Still no mention of moving me to another room by management. I left the resort to meet friends for lunch. I later returned the room had been serviced. New towels but not enough to keep the floor dry and to dry myself after the shower as I requested extra towels. The blind was back up kn the ceiling. Small pieces of wood, dust of sheet rock and a large rock was left on the TV stand and night stand. My guess is these were things used for the repair of the large blind. I tried the remote it still didn't work. This was a disaster of a stay at a hotel that has a luxury brand attached to it. I can't begin to explain how disappointed I was with the hotel and management who added to my frustration and headache for several days after being struck in the top of the head twice by the blind.

An excellent short break for winter sun in a beautiful setting

The ocean club on coste Norte was a superb little resort with an exquisite safe beach and beautiful pools. Two landscaped jacuzzis were perfect for everyone, not too hot but warm and relaxing. Our three bedroom suite was perfect for two couples and a toddler. We had two complaints: unsafe balcony with loose metal bars which required constant attention with a young child. A glass wall or stronger bars would be much better. We also felt the breakfast could have been improved. An additional special each day would improve the boring sameness of the meal on offer. The service was good and staff were lovely. Just a few minor touches would elevate this place from four star to five.

Not quite 5 star, but ok

Check in was not smooth at all. We are told to pay $50 per child per night extra charge. Not clearly outlined when we made the booking, and slapped on top like a money grab. On the concierge tour - the property is indeed very small and limited. There is a beachfront but the frontage only spans the property. As we have young kids this sufficed for us. The communication around various service requests and needs were pretty inconsistent. Sometimes prompt, other times we would have to ask up to 4 times spanning 8 hours for certain requests to be fulfilled. We spoke with the GM Emna about this - she was apologetic and promised to work better with the team on improving service. All that we can ask for is a commitment to do better. Many members of the service staff only spoke Spanish, no/limited English, which may create miscommunication. As a platinum member, breakfast was included. We enjoyed the breakfast spread daily - expect toasts/pastries, cereal, scrambled eggs, sausage/bacon, mashed plantain, smoked salmon/meats, fresh fruit and yogurts. On our last day they moved to à la carte menu and only offered fruit and pastries. No explanations why, so we went off property to enjoy a heartier meal. Resort was not busy on most of the days. Unlike other Caribbean islands where it rains briefly with sunny weather the remaining time, when weather calls for rain, expect to stay indoors. It downpours so much that it caused flooding across the property on one of the days for us. The rooms are large, with a kitchen/fridge, and good for families. Not every room offers a washer/dryer so make your request specifically. It is wonderful to have if you are travelling with kids. Overall - ok and hope that some areas can be better over time.

Our 2nd time at the Ocean Club

This is our second stay at the Ocean Club and we absolutely love it. We always come during the Thanksgiving break, and it’s usually less crowded. At check-in we were upgraded thanks to my Gold status. From start to finish the staff takes great care of you. The property has multiple pools, a spa, a restaurant, a gym, etc. The rooms are large and well-equipped, with a full kitchen, washer/dryer, iron, and a living room. They also set up a WhatsApp group for us, so every request, from a boat tour to room service and spa was handled quickly there. The food and breakfast at the restaurant were excellent. I really can’t think of any downside, maybe the restaurant and drinks are priced a bit high, but overall everything was perfect, especially the staff. We’ll definitely be back next year.
