On the island of Saint Lucia, surrounded by nearly 200 acres of pristine rain forest trailing down to the azure waters of the Caribbean, Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort quietly awaits to provide guests a sweet escape into a pocket of serenity. The suites and villas, draped in a deep privacy that stems from the thick foliage of the lush forest, embody luxury with their spectacular views and amenity-rich appointments. Behind the doors of the one and two bedroom villas you might find al fresco showers, private decks and plunge pools. Butler service is also an option, allowing for mundane tasks such as unpacking bags and doing laundry to be taken care of.

We just got back from Sugar Beach for 2nd year in a row and loved every minute. My 9 year olds cried leaving Canis at the Kids club. Our butlers M&M were fabulous.

The Sugar Beach resort is absolutely fabulous. One of our best ever holidays. Fantastic location, gorgeous vista, beautiful accommodation, first class restaurants with amazing food and service to match. The staff are universally friendly, helpful and with attention to detail. We are already looking at dates for a return trip.

We stayed here for 7 nights during peak time (April). The resort was sold out. It’s a beautiful resort, with friendly staff. While some things are A+ and live up to the luxury, many do not. For the extremely premium prices, it needs to be near perfect, and it fell short in a few areas. I’ll start with the best and go down to the worst… Location: A+ Right between the Pitons, with two very swimmable beaches, calm waters and amazing views. The resort is very hilly with a lot of stairs. Even if staying in beach bungalows (like we did) you will have to navigate stairs to get anywhere. Resort is a 45 min drive from the airport across very twisty roads but worth it for the location. Sunsets here are amazing. Butlers: A+ The shining service stars, we loved our two butlers (M & M as we called them). Helped us with so much, including when my husband got a reaction from a bad sunscreen. They are properly trained and very on top of things. They helped us book two excursions, helped with some dinner reservation changes, and overall just checked in with us constantly. Housekeeping: A+ Resort is extremely clean. Housekeeping was stellar and everyday outside maintenance came to clean our patio, beach chairs, etc. Room: A- We had beach bungalows 19. We don’t regret choosing the beach bungalow. Yes, it’s less privacy than the hillside villa’s but the convenience of getting to restaurant, spa, and lobby with a short walk was worth it. And sitting on the beach in front of room was great. Splurge for the luxury bungalows as they are on the quieter section of the beach with less noise. The bungalows are a decent size and very well designed. A/C was great. Beds comfy. Only negative is it’s an open layout and the tub is in the middle of the room. No doors to the bathroom. Why do hotel designers not like walls and doors anymore?? Spa: A I did 3 treatments which were all great. The spa is mostly wooden huts on stilts in the trees set back in the forest. Loved it. So unique. My only complaint is that my Thai massage as in an actual building, not the huts, and there was no music playing. So it as dead silent during the treatment which made it awkward. Activities: A The private hike and private boat tour we set up through the resort were perfect. Also, the private transfers to and from the airport. Definitely book everything through the hotel. A bit more expensive, but worth it for quality. Gym: A Has all top-notch equipment. I went in the afternoon so less busy, I’m sure in the mornings it would be crowded. But it’s a nice gym for a resort. Beach: A- / Beach Staff: C The beach is wide and has great wooden huts for perfect shade. All beaches in St Lucia are public so around mid day boats brought in others who took over a far end, and also walked along doing their Instagram shots…some a bit R-rated and classless. Not the hotels fault. However, where the beach falls short is in the staff and their chair policy. They have a 90 min beach chair hold. However, the staff will hold it for you starting at 8 am. We saw them putting books down for guest that tipped them. But most of the chair holders didn’t show up until 11 am or some days even noon. We are early risers, ready to sit on the beach at 9 am, yet all the front row loungers were “taken” and sat empty for hours. Why is this allowed? Why not first come, first serve? Not great for a luxury resort. The beach staff was slow and rarely came around. It was not 5-star service in the least here. Dinners/lunches: B- The food here was hit or miss. Some meals we loved (Jalousie). Others were a mixed bag. The Latin night buffet was a rip off. We paid nearly $375 for 2 people for the buffet + drinks. Extremely loud music, kids running around. Was not worth it. The good news is they have 4 restaurants for dinner so you can rotate. Staff in restaurants were attentive and friendly outside breakfast (see below). Breakfast: D- The buffet breakfast is included in the rate, but ordering off the menu is not. However, if you do room service you only pay the service charge. So that’s...odd. But the buffet is bad. Everything was cold. And there were no eggs out. You had to wait on 1 of 2 egg making stations which only had 2 burners. The lines were long, over 20 mins or more on busy days. Other luxury resorts will write down your order, then a server will bring it to you. Not here. You must wait in line yourself. The whole scene was something i imagine is out of a Carnival cruise…chaotic, stressful, and nothing luxury. One morning we decided to order off the menu to avoid the cold food and long wait. The waitress seemed surprised and goes “but the buffet is included, the menu is not”. We said we knew. We ordered similar items to what the buffet had, she literally laughed at us, shook her head and goes “ok!”. Do I need to be mocked at breakfast when paying these rates? No. We did room service most of the rest of the week to avoid this and frankly was happier. Check in: B- / Checkout: D We did the pre-check in via the app including uploading phots of our passports, yet at check in we had to do it all over again. What was the point of pre-check in? Nothing. Checkout was worse. They warned us Saturday was a busy checkin/out day so get there early. We did and only 1 guy was working who was with a guests going through their bill in painstaking detail. We waited, and waited. He never called for a coworker. Never apologized for the wait. Finally after 25 mins I walked and found someone to see if there was anyone else who could help us. that person found the second agent in the back room, at 8:30 am. She comes out— no apology for the wait—and a man jumps in front of us. We go “we’ve been waiting and we’re before him”. She puts us her hands as if it say “it’s ok”, then proceeds to help him before us. Her coworker saw the whole thing and said nothing. She again did not apologize for the wait. Why can’t we do check out like a holiday inn and get a folio under the door? Why can’t the butler do it? Why can’t it be easy? Why not have more agents to do check in/out if it’s such a process? The Viceory App: F Hardly worked. Wonky at best. I found I called for room service or when I needed something as the app just worked a bit like crap. Keep in mind St Lucia puts 10% service charge on everything. Including the room rate. So you tip on top of that, plus there is 17% in taxes on everything. So it all adds up very very fast. It’s an expensive place. But beautiful, and serene at the resort.

Amazing trip, can’t stop talking about how much fun we had and the accommodations at sugar beach. We swam, saw tons of dolphins, ate amazing food. Don’t just stay at the resort, even though it’s tempting because of how immaculate it is.

Sugar Beach is truly a gem. We visited during Easter week at full occupancy, yet it never once felt crowded—a testament to how thoughtfully the resort is laid out. The dining exceeded expectations across the board; Saltwood and Jalousie were standouts, and the Latin Night was a highlight with incredible variety and an over-the-top dessert display. Service was consistently excellent, from prompt and attentive beach and poolside staff to the incredibly helpful team at the water sports center, who made it easy for us to enjoy kayaking and paddleboarding. What really sets this resort apart, though, is the people—everyone goes above and beyond with genuine warmth and a “nothing is too much trouble” attitude. We packed in some unforgettable experiences: hiking Gros Piton (challenging but absolutely worth it), visiting the sulphur springs and mud baths, cooling off at Toraille Waterfall, and taking a sunset cruise where we even spotted whales. One of our favorite excursions was a private snorkeling catamaran trip with Mystic Man—highly recommend. Our two-bedroom villa was stunning, perched up on the hillside with beautiful views and convenient stair access down to the beach. A special shoutout to Karan and Michael, our butlers, who made the week seamless and truly exceptional. We traveled with our two kids (11 and 13), and they loved every minute—especially the family chocolate-making experience. All around, it was an incredible trip and one we’d absolutely repeat.
