About the Hotel

A member of the distinguished von Essen Hotels Collection, Thornbury Castle is a magnificent castle palace just 90 minutes west of London in North Bristol, England. King Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, slept in what is now the Duke's Bedchamber, and today this accommodation is one of your many sumptuous choices. Among the fascinating historic appointments are stone walls, coats of arms, tapestries, arrow-slit windows, and the oldest Tudor gardens in England.

Mobility issues

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 8 hours ago

As a person with mobility issues, they went out of their way to make sure I had easy access, a suite to move my mobility deviceseasily and safely and added a shower chair for safety. They simply went above and beyond and this level of excellence is remarkable. Garden to table food deserves Michelin level. It was fantastic!

Your cup will runneth over at Thornbury Castle!

Once again I must wax lyrical about Thornbury Castle. This is now our 4th visit and 3rd stay. Previous two times we stayed in the Jane Seymour Suite. This time we stayed in the Catherine of Aragon Suite. I wanted to stay in this suite because it has a lovely roll top bath, and I do like to luxuriate in a bath!.. Regarding the other features and ambience.. all absolutely superb in every respect. Evening dinner at table 45 in the library is simply a 'must do' experience. The food is Michelin standard and the location and atmosphere of table 45 make it a fairy tale setting.. Thanks to Pedro for looking after us at dinner. Breakfast next morning in the main restaurant also superb.. thanks to another Pedro for faultless and friendly waitering. Thornbury Castle is only about 50 miles from where we live so it's very easy and convenient to get to. It has become one of our all time favourite hotels and we intend to keep going there. Thanks to all concerned and see you again!

Lovely and Unique

Lovely and unique-we enjoyed every minute of our stay at Thornbury Castle-so much so that we cancelled other plans to stay longer. There is so much to explore on the grounds and the service was welcoming, friendly and attentive. A special shoutout to Makayla who checked us in, gave us a history of the castle and carried my oversized luggage up the winding stair to our GORGEOUS room with four poster bed and fabulous views of the lawn and front garden. The room itself was expansive and beautifully furnished with antiques and the bathroom was luxurious and light filled. We had dinner and breakfast and both were a dream with delicious dishes and amazing service. The experience of this hotel was one of the highlights of our time in the UK and we look forward to someday returning!

Perfection.

I’ve recently returned from a two night stay at the castle for my mother’s 60th birthday celebration. I cannot commend this place enough. The building, its features, its staff, its food and drink, its ambiance - all absolutely fantastic. We were in awe of the building and how beautifully and carefully it had been maintained. The staff were top class - from Taylor, Jenny and Evie on reception, to Pedro and Beth in the restaurant and the kind and professional members of the housekeeping team. They all (including those that I can’t recall the names of!) could not have done anymore for us. We also enjoyed a spa treatment each which was done by Helena. She was so friendly and professional and we both very much enjoyed our treatments. I chose Thornbury Castle because I wanted to treat my mum to a truly special and luxurious stay in a place steeped in history. Thank you to all that brought my hopes to life. We made some fantastic memories that we will treasure for ever.
