A member of the distinguished von Essen Hotels Collection, Thornbury Castle is a magnificent castle palace just 90 minutes west of London in North Bristol, England. King Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, slept in what is now the Duke's Bedchamber, and today this accommodation is one of your many sumptuous choices. Among the fascinating historic appointments are stone walls, coats of arms, tapestries, arrow-slit windows, and the oldest Tudor gardens in England.

We booked a last minute night away and managed to get the Catherine of Aragon Suite up at the top of the tower. The 4 poster bed was as big as two doubles joined together, wonderfully soft. The bathroom was enormous with top quality fittings and an abundance of Molton Brown goodies. Had the tasting menu - outstanding food,

The bar staff were very good, but the next day we waited a long time for someone to take our breakfast order, we had to speak to someone to find out if they knew we were there as they were hoovering/cleaning in the room whilst we were waiting. Eventually the breakfast was good but we felt that we had been ignored not the level of service you expect for the price we paid

Amazing experience in a beautiful Tudor Castle. Breathtaking and well done. Dinner was amazing and a true culinary experience. Breakfast was so good and the pancakes were so good. Every staff member was pleasant and polite.

I had one of the worst hospitality experiences I’ve ever encountered during my recent stay at Thornbury Castle in July 2025. Despite this being a highly anticipated and expensive vacation, I was treated with complete disrespect by the front desk staff — specifically a receptionist named Kayla. There was a misunderstanding with my Expedia booking regarding a deposit that had already been paid, but instead of helping to resolve the issue, Kayla was rude, dismissive, and shockingly hostile. She outright refused to listen to my explanation and eventually threatened to call security and have me removed from the hotel, simply because I questioned being charged again. I remained calm and respectful throughout — no shouting, no bad language — but the way I was treated was humiliating and entirely unprofessional. Another staff member later told me she “struggles working with her,” which says a lot. This situation completely ruined our visit, and the lack of hospitality is appalling for a property that markets itself as a luxury destination. I’ve contacted management and escalated this to the parent company (Luxury Lodges). I truly hope they take action so no other guest is treated this way.

Such a beautiful hotel set in stunning grounds. We wished that we had booked for an extra night! All the members of staff that we interacted with were so friendly and nice. Our suite, the King Edward VI, was huge, amazing and spotlessly clean. Food for dinner and breakfast was excellent with perfect portion sizes and the service was seamless. Definitely hope to visit again in the future.
