Thornbury Castle and Tudor Gardens

This was a bucket list experience and I have been so wanting to visit for over a year so expectations were high. We visited for two nights Friday-Sunday and Saturday was my birthday. Our room was a dog friendly superior room. Stunning bathroom and a gorgeous spacious room. It did open onto the car park so a view of the car park and all the noise of people arriving and leaving (restaurant is open to non residence) wasn’t ideal. Mini bar very sparse - a few juices or a gin and tonic in a tin available to buy. Evening turndown service very basic. A mini hand cream left for both of us. No radio or lighting set. No chocs on the pillows etc. The room had wooden shutters which didn’t close fully so we were awake at 5am with light coming through the cracks. Our package included breakfast and dinner. We also added an afternoon tea for my birthday. No one acknowledged me for my birthday. No complimentary prosecco or chocolate smear or even a card. Actually I did get a card but it was addressed to the wrong person and never corrected. Food was really well presented. The mains were cold but tasty. I know it’s in the countryside but dead flies and wasps on the shelf in the library area wasn’t nice. Staff all very friendly but warning - you will be charged 12% additional service on check out on all food and drinks. Wine list was good. Not the cheapest at £40ish at the lower end. We had a nice stay but… it could’ve been better.

The castle and rooms are amazing. You get the real castle experience. The grounds are like going back in time. It would be nice to have climate control in all the rooms.

The whole experience of staying at Thornbury Castle was excellent. The staff were very welcoming; nothing was too much trouble. Our Suite was immaculate, very well maintained and spotlessly clean. The food served was delicious. We would certainly recommend this hotel.

What a wonderful quality experience Thornbury Castle is, full of history and gorgeous decor in all the rooms. Felt special from the booking through our stay to the moment we left. Food and drinks were excellent, the bedchamber a tad warm. Will certainly be visiting again.

This was the most English you can get. The castle is fantastic and the gardens were a dream come true. We went with out three daughters and the loved everything from the bed size and shape to the fountain in the garden. The food was delicious and the staff absolutely caring.
