A member of the distinguished von Essen Hotels Collection, Thornbury Castle is a magnificent castle palace just 90 minutes west of London in North Bristol, England. King Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, slept in what is now the Duke's Bedchamber, and today this accommodation is one of your many sumptuous choices. Among the fascinating historic appointments are stone walls, coats of arms, tapestries, arrow-slit windows, and the oldest Tudor gardens in England.

Well what can you say - you are staying in a castle. That alone is already an amazing experience. The property is gorgeous. All the common areas (library, restaurant, gardens) invite you to slow down and look around. Staff from hotel and restaurant is really excellent, always polite and ready to help. I mentioned on reception that I believed my heater wasn't working and they promptly resolved the issue and added an extra duvet. The room was very comfortable, perfect bed, robe, great amenities and small touches that made us feel pampered. Breakfast was perfect every day and their restaurant is a MUST. One feedback would be having one person to carry luggage. The woman that received us asked if we needed help, but she was the one helping. We had big heavy luggage so my husband carried himself. I think since they know they have lots of stairs this would be a nice extra. The only thing I would mention as a negative is that it was a busy weekend (Easter) and the hotel had a lot of kids. Noisy running in corridors and screaming kids. And since our bedroom door was right in front of the access stairs, the noise was something that really bothered us on the first couple of days. The hotel like I said above, invites you to slow down and relax so in my opinion, it felt weird to me that they accept small children. But it's not something that would prevent me from coming back. The place it's worth it. And at the end of the weekend when it was less busy we did enjoy the peace we were expecting.

We had a wonderful one night stay in the King James V room. We wandered around exploring the Beautiful grounds and common rooms. Great six course dinner, and we had the best night’s sleep! It was just what we needed to decompress and refresh from a long week of travel. Wish we could’ve stayed longer!

An amazing stay, such high standards throughout, excellent experience! Dining - food was perfect, so many flavours and tastes, presented artistically, an absolute delight. Room - Henry VII suite was amazing, beautifully decorated, clean, immaculate. Castle - the grounds, dining areas, bar area are beautiful, relaxing areas with a tranquil atmosphere.

Thornbury Castle is uniquely splendid and wonderful in every way. The history comes alive from the moment you drive through the gateway and what follows is a stunning hotel and restaurant experience in breathtaking surroundings. The service is world class, friendly and thoughtful.

We love to try staying at historic hotels, and Thornbury was fantastic. The venue is superb and well maintained. What really made our visit though were the staff. All of whom we met were extremely friendly and professional. The meal in the restaurant was fabulous and worthy of their 3 rosette classification. It was interesting dining in such a historic setting. Our suite was split on 2 levels and was quirky and interesting but luxurious. I can’t really fault our visit!
