A member of the distinguished von Essen Hotels Collection, Thornbury Castle is a magnificent castle palace just 90 minutes west of London in North Bristol, England. King Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, slept in what is now the Duke's Bedchamber, and today this accommodation is one of your many sumptuous choices. Among the fascinating historic appointments are stone walls, coats of arms, tapestries, arrow-slit windows, and the oldest Tudor gardens in England.

Perfect place to spend our wedding anniversary. Staff very attentive and solved the tiny problem with our room very quickly, apologized for the issue and gave us complimentary pre dinner drinks by way of compensation. Service, accommodation and food throughout was exceptional... Thank you.

We stayed at the castle for dinner bed and breakfast, for a 60th Birthday celebration. We had booked the hotel almost a year ago and the booking team, mainly Sophie was incredible. We had bombarded her with questions over the last 11 months or so, nothing was a problem. There was a group of 8 of us. We arrived mid afternoon, had a wander around the gardens and the adjacent church and played Croquet, which was free to use for guests of the hotel. The grounds and gardens are stunning. We then had drinks in the lovely lounge full of pictures and artworks with it all tastefully decorated in with beautiful fabrics, works of art, all adding to the Tudor experience. The Reception staff were really friendly and helpful. We had booked the standard bedchambers, within the main castle. These were far from standard ! The reception staff personally took us to our rooms & wow, wow, wow, they were stunning ! We stayed in the Audley Room, The four poster bed was so comfortable, the shower was amazing, again decorated with lovely fabrics, artworks and views over the gardens and church. We then had dinner and we had booked a private room, The Barons Sitting Room , as there was a group of us we didn’t want to disturb the other guests who were having dinner. We had pre dinner drinks in the Chancellors Room next to the Barons Sitting Room, where the staff took our dinner order & kept us refreshed with wine, cocktails & other drinks. A really special mention has to go to Jess, who served us all night, she was superb, nothing was a problem, the dinner service being absolutely en point, she was super friendly, engaging , nothing being a problem, she also arranged a wireless speaker so we could play our own music, within the dining room. The Barons Dining Room was just stunning, candlelit, full of atmosphere in a lovely environment. It was extremely special. After dinner we then had some post dinner drinks in the lounge, then another wander around the castle at night, this was also so so lovely. The next morning we had booked breakfast for 9.45am, this time in the main dining room, which again was lovely. A beautiful breakfast with lots of choice, from pastries, to cooked breakfasts, freshly squeezed orange juices, the food was extremely generous in portion sizes and the quality was exceptional and beautifully presented. We were again served by Jess and many other staff, all of which was perfect. Would there be anything I would change, No Was it expensive, yes, but I think to stay in a castle hotel, packed full of history & treading in the footsteps of king and queens, it really was good value for money. We have traveled quite extensively within the UK and Europe and have been fortunate to stay in some lovely places, this without doubt is one of the best hotels and experiences we have had. Finally big shout out for everyone at Thornbury Castle, Sophie, Jess, The Reception Staff, All the Waitresses, Chefs & everyone working behind the scenes who we didn’t meet, you all created a truly memorable experience for us all which we will never forget.
