'A Nice Enough Place, With Some Niggly Bits'

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

Before I begin to provide our own personal opinion of this establishment, I’d like to make comment on the last six months or so, of TA Reviews regarding Pineapple Beach Club. Essentially, 90% of those submissions are, in my mind pretty accurate. Therefore, one might think, that leaves us with not a lot to comment on if its already been said. But I will give it a go. I’ve awarded PBC 4* mainly because I am of a mind to believe that, although this establishment has its ‘niggly’ aspects, I’m not going to penalise it because of factors outside of its control. More about that later. But it is just about worthy of 4*. So, lets get the formal stuff out of the way. No matter how much you object to paying out for levies/tourist taxes upon checkout…...suck it up buttercup, cause you are going to have to pay it. If you are booking through any reputable Travel Agent, you will have been told this well in advance. You are fully responsible for the safekeeping of door key(s) and safe key. You lose any of them, you will get charged. So just like your own house and car keys back home, look after them. To the guest(s) that dropped their door key on one of the pathways, which I found and handed to reception, no thanks needed, hopefully it saved you a bit of money though. Immigration/Emigration at the airport is still woeful. Most main roads on the island I would now class as ‘not so crater like’ than the last time we visited Antigua. Taxi fares are set, drivers are friendly. Sargassum flows onto the island from the Atlantic quite nicely, but in all fairness, PBC clears it up from the beach quite successfully. Security at PBC appears well staffed and very visible, and they smile! There are some very well appointed guest rooms in a very good state of repair, there are some that have been sort of refurbished, but maybe the trades people were having a bit of an off day and couldn’t be bothered with attention to detail. We opted for a Beach Front Room and were reasonably happy with it. It was possibly the room verandah that sealed it for us. Morning and afternoon hot Columbian beverages were consumed there with a nice view out to sea. Getting room amenities restocked was a battle at times, eventually, somehow we ended up with a glut of shower gel towards the end of our trip. Housekeeping visits for us were well scheduled, and daily. The room not always cleaned to a reasonable standard, various follicles from former inhabitants and a grimy sink were evident So, the niggles. Food wise, in theory you really shouldn’t go hungry. The meals at the Pineapple Grill were, for want of a better description, hard work! The menu appeared good on paper, alas the finished item, especially the beef options, had the consistency of a well used dartboard. Anything involving pasta, you could have used to glue the dartboard to the wall. The mood of some staff at the Grill was a bit of a lottery sometimes, perhaps it was the moon phase on particular evenings. Sometimes there were not enough staff to cope. Shame as this restaurant is quite well appointed, if not a bit humid at times, depending on the direction of the evening breeze. The Orchid eatery we did not bother with, as our thoughts on paying a surcharge for food, probably being cooked in the same kitchen as The Grill, was not worth the gamble for us. In contrast, for us, The Italian was a good experience. The staffing level again, appeared on the low side on a few of our visits. The Topaz buffet, it is what it is basically…...with the added entertainment of a minority of staff who really just couldn’t comprehend the meaning of common courtesy and good manners. But in the main, most were smiley and attentive. Wildlife is very apparent during daylight hours in this eatery. The local birds will be watching you and are very proficient in food theft. They are quite happy to help themselves at the buffet as well. Bit gross, especially as they sometimes leave ‘little messages’. Maybe the Resort Cats could be a little more proactive? If they can stay awake long enough. The Sunday roast dinner was more than acceptable. Other species available for momentary viewing around the resort, are small lizards, the odd Mongoose and some spectacular flying/diving displays courtesy of the pelicans. There are Mozzies, there was no evidence of any fogging during our tenure, but my bites didn’t reach double figures. Some can be avoided by remembering the usual precautions. The Pelican Grill was pretty consistent, the menu is dangerous, but in a good way. We possibly ate there a little too often. But always satisfied with what was provided. The Outhouse we visited, but never ate there. We were just curious about the view etc. It didn’t fail on that aspect. The Beach Party/White Party looked well organised with a lot of effort put in by the staff. As was the Street Party. In fact the food was very good. Drinks wise, there are some nice branded drinks available throughout the resort, you just have to ask for them. They are on display. The Cafe 1761 is a life saver. Wonderfully located, very well stocked and the staff happy to accommodate any reasonable coffee recipe. Its the main hangout for the resident cats, who don’t really do an awful lot, other than briefly acknowledge your presence, then continue their slumber. I have mentioned in previous reviews regarding criticisms of resorts which really are not the resorts fault. PBC is no different and my following observations are in no way making PBC responsible. I am of course referring to the behaviour of some guests who’s misguided entitlement, interferes with the comfort of others. Here we go then. So, to be sat in a restaurant of an evening, enjoying food, having a casual conversation with my significant other, and a reasonable tasting red vino, then having to put up with the guests a few tables away playing loud Gangsta/Hardcore Rap on a mobile phone? This was tolerated for around 10 minutes by many couples, including us. I say tolerated, that’s how long it took for us and other diners to get up and leave. The staff didn’t appear to intervene, maybe its the norm? Without doubt, one of the nicest locations on the resort is the Infinity Pool, with a dynamic vista of the beach and sea. However, maybe this location should take on the mantle ‘Strait of Hormuz’. Never in my life have I experienced such ignorance from a minority of fellow guests (and I’ve visited the Dominican Republic and Cancún). A ‘Fleet’ of other guests will suddenly arrive and take over the pool, in a short time others arrive shouting at each other across the pool. Within minutes the pool is no longer useable by other guests due to the main access steps being blockaded. More arrive, as does the alcohol and food. Shortly after an ‘Armada’ arrives, publicly declaring they cannot stay on the beach because its ‘too loud down there man’. A blue-tooth speaker appears at the poolside, a playlist is selected on the owners phone, and well…...I think you get the picture. The introduction of loud music means they shout a lot louder, and I’m not the biggest fan of Country Music. This would turn out to be a regular occurrence. Yes, we could have found somewhere else to sunbathe, but it was a similar scenario at the other pools. There is a sign at the pools asking guests to be ‘considerate’ in the use of mobile phones. Bizarrely, on one occasion, one of the group approached us as they left the pool and apologised for the noise and stated that we shouldn’t have to put up with it. Indeed! I get it, everyone is on holiday and likes to have fun, but a little consideration goes a long way. Night time entertainment is OK. It’s been discussed in a lot of recent reviews. My only observation is the DJ. When mixing one track with another, by all means alter the tempo initially, but wind it back to normal after, as it gets a bit ‘Alvin and The Chipmunks’. This all happens at the Mongoose Bar. It’s the only place open in the evening, so is very busy and sometime very noisy. However, its a bar, there’s entertainment and most, if not all, were having a good time. So, The Pineapple Beach Club, is it worth spending time there? The price obviously has a lot of influence on any decision. For some guests arriving from USA/Canada, this is probably good value for money. For those travelling from further afield, it can be quite pricey depending on room choice and flights etc. 2026 prices will give you a decent choice, and not too extortionate. We stayed for 14 nights, and after some pre holiday homework on this forum (and others), we felt that the price paid, should reflect its worth, it did, but only just. Remember to make sure you take the local taxes into consideration. The longer you stay, the more you pay. We have spent more to stay in other establishments in Antigua, and the difference is blatantly obvious. You get what you pay for. We have no plans to return to PBC, but would recommend it, especially as an ‘introduction’ to the island if its your first visit. It’s a reasonable benchmark to start with. The weather was very kind to us and providing you don’t expect 5* service you’ll survive quite contently. We thank PBC and most of its staff for their hospitality. Any issues that arose under your control were few, so yes, you did OK!

Great Visit!

Just got back from our first stay on Antigua and at Pineapple Beach Club. The resort was excellent. Food choices were good and reservations were fairly easy. Location of the resort was great and room was really nice. Spent everyday at teh beach and never had to worry about getting chairs. "G-man" at the beach wll set you up with tours or water activities. He is super nice and not pushy. Bartenders were all excellent with a special shout out to Joel, Bashi, Suzette and Lorissa. We went on the Shirley Heights BBQ dinner party on Sunday nght and booked a private 3-hour island tour with Shem Johnson. He took us to Deveils Bridge, Betty's Hope Plantation Museam, Nelsons Dockyard in English Harbor, then to eat at a restaurant only locals go to. It was a great day. HIghly recommend this resort!

Another fab holiday

Well let’s start by saying this was our 13th trip to Antigua and 11th time to pineapple. So there must be something that we like. Pineapple has been under a renovation since our last visit and the changes are noticeable and practical to make the experience more accommodating and modern. Arrival easy checkin and requires scanning a qr code to complete details and access the WiFi. Run punch for a welcome and a welcome cold face towel. Walked ourselves to the room as we knew where to go. Tropical waterfront room had been ungraded and looked amazing and modern with a bit of Caribbean charm. Food. Buffets good and provide choice for all. Booking restaurants need to be booked at guest services, but you can book up to a week in advance which is a major improvement. Pineapple Grill and Chef Pietro’s both upgraded and serve good food and service. Mary’s outhouse always good for an informal tasty lunch with the grill for informal and snack food great. Tuna wrap and onion rings amazing. Coffee shop and staff are also a bonus. There is always entertainment in the evenings, some great and some background atmosphere. As we have been on many tours previously we hired a car and took time to go to the places on the island that we liked and to some new places that we hadn’t been to before. Easy to book and driving hassle free. Was also lovely to be welcomed back and remembered by Joanne and Arlene, both who are stars and perfect ambassadors for Antigua and Pineapple. Other staff who made us feel welcome and took time to talk, laugh and joke and to take time to ask us about us and our days were: Martise, Kurtrice, Elisha, Delta, Anetta, Kellogg, Jasper, Joel and Natasha. We had a great time and will be back

Great time had by all

We recently returned from Pineapple Beach Club and had a fantastic week. We truly can’t say enough about the resort; there was always plenty of staff ready to help with anything we needed. A special thank‑you to Renee at Café 1761 for the perfect morning caffeine boost, and to Stepon at both Topaz and Outhouse for always making sure we had everything we needed, whether food or drinks. And an extra heartfelt thank‑you to Jasper, who consistently went out of his way to help, support, and make us feel like family. Thank you to everyone for an unforgettable stay.

"Outstanding Stay and Exceptional Customer Service from Troy Watkins"

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

My recent stay at Pineapple Beach Club in Antigua was outstanding. Our group consisted of more than 70 people, and despite the size of our group, the resort did an excellent job of providing a memorable experience. The food throughout our stay was very good, with the highlight being Saturday night's poolside dining event. Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of the event, but the atmosphere, food selection, and overall experience made it one of the highlights of our trip. I would especially like to recognize Troy Watkins from Pelican Bay. A large portion of our group attended the Shirley Heights Sunset Party and returned to the resort around 10:10 p.m. At that time, Pelican Bay was the only location still serving food. To help streamline the process, our group collected everyone's orders on the bus and sent one person to place them. When we arrived, we quickly realized we were not the only bus that had the same idea. Troy was suddenly faced with an overwhelming volume of orders from multiple groups arriving at the same time. Despite the pressure and obvious workload, he remained professional, courteous, and focused on serving guests. We observed him asking for assistance several times. When another employee eventually arrived, the support appeared limited. At one point, we overheard the employee tell Troy to simply tell everyone that they had run out of food. What impressed me was Troy's response to the situation. Rather than taking the easy way out, he continued working through the orders and doing everything he could to accommodate guests. While anyone in that position could have become frustrated, Troy remained professional and continued providing excellent customer service under extremely challenging circumstances. I am not mentioning this incident as a criticism of the resort. In fact, quite the opposite. No resort is perfect, and busy periods happen. What stood out to me was the dedication of an employee who was determined to take care of guests despite the circumstances. Overall, my experience at Pineapple Beach Club was excellent. The staff members I interacted with were friendly and welcoming, the food was enjoyable, and the resort provided a wonderful atmosphere for relaxation and fun. Employees like Troy Watkins are a tremendous asset to the resort and played a significant role in making our stay memorable. I would gladly recommend Pineapple Beach Club to anyone visiting Antigua and would not hesitate to return.
