Luxury With Some Quirks

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

Grand hotel in name and stature. Location can’t be beat. Lovely walk to Vasa Museum, shopping district, Gamla Stan Island, and Skeppsholmen Island (and much much more!) This was only a two night stay to tour the highlights of Stockholm before boarding a luxury cruise (stay tuned for that review!) Breakfast buffet goes late, good for the late risers and it was OK, not stunning. If you are wearing casual vacation clothes prepare to feel a little underdressed, but honestly I felt that way almost everywhere in Stockholm. Well appointed room, comfortable bed, excellent water pressure, responsive hot water. Climate control was confusing in the room and there were significant threshold tripping hazards at the entry door and the bathroom door. There was not a ‘do not disturb’ sign or light, so falling asleep in the early evening after staying awake to try and get over jet lag lead to insistent knocking on the door for an almost aggressive attempt to provide a turn down service. The light switches were weird for a North American, I swear I’m not an idiot, but they worked inconsistently. Oddly, both my wife and I had a difficult time turning the TV off.

Well run hotel, perfectly located with great food and friendly staff.

We very much enjoyed our stay! We were in room 646. Great view. We had breakfast included through American Express. It was excellent. We ate in each of the three different venues where breakfast was served. Don't miss the Swedish pancakes. The concierge was very helpful. They helped us select restaurants and buy tickets for certain sight seeing events. We had so much fun that we extended our trip by a day. I want to express particular admiration for our dinner at Mathias Dahlgren. We sat at the bar; Adam was our server. His recommendations were spot on. My wife particularly enjoyed the corn dish, which she never would have ordered on her own. But every dish was excellent--creative, flavorful, beautifully presented, without out being weird. The hotel's location cannot be beat. The pillows and sheets were excellent. The shower was on the small side but the water pressure was good.

What Does A Disaster Look Like?

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

What does a disaster look like? Let me recount: 1. We were checking into 4 rooms and were able to get 2 rooms upon arrival around 12:30pm. After lunch, we were told, our other rooms would be available, and so to lunch we went. Taking our time, we arrived back at 4:30pm. Our 2 rooms weren't ready, and we were told we would have to wait another hour at least. Off to a flying start! 2. The rooms are cheaply appointed and appear more Ikea than luxury. They are spare, and while there is such a thing as attractive or chic Swedish style (which is lovely), this is not it. The bed is oddly lumpy, and the bedspread was particularly ugly and made of some cheap synthetic material. The drapes look like shower curtains, and the showers (even in our larger-sized rooms) are tiny and cramped. This is strange since the bathrooms are of a nice size. There are also no toiletry items provided (ear buds, cotton pads, etc.), and our chandelier (a poor attempt to dress up the room) was missing all but one of its lights. Let's continue! 3. The buffet breakfast (the choice of our children) here is just unacceptably mediocre. The breads look old and of poor quality, the fruits were spoiled, and the selection was poor overall. My favorite was the fresh squeezed orange juice that "might have been squeezed yesterday or the day before" according to our kind and forthcoming server! Service was not bad, so the hotel should get credit for that, but overall, this was one of the worst breakfast experiences we've had at a 5-star hotel. Maybe the a la carte breakfast would be better? But we move on... 4. Our children wanted to swim in a pool. Assuming a 5-star hotel would have a pool for them, we were stunned to find that they were not allowed in. This was particularly strange since there are SO MANY children throughout the hotel. Also, the pool is in the spa area, but there are hardly any adults there. Of course, I was offered a spa suite for a fee with a hot tub equivalent. Not only was it not suitable, but it felt like a shakedown. It's been just about 24 hours since we've been here, and I hardly ever write reviews. Frankly, who has the time? In this case, however, our children are playing video games after a day out rather than enjoying their vacation as they and we envisioned. The hotels to be cutting corners wherever possible, hoping guests won't notice. I remain wary of the rest of our stay here, and I would be wary of booking here if I were you. P.S. Since I hate posts that only offer one side of an experience, I should note that the location of this hotel is excellent. We have also experienced friendly service from some of the staff. Everything has not been terrible, but too much is for it to go unmentioned for a hotel that purports to be special.
