Hidden Luxury in the French Riviera

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

Just came back from a lovely two nights at Grand Hotel des Sablettes Plage, and enjoyed it immensely. After having been in Cap Ferrat for a several days prior, it was so remarkable to have some La Seyne-sur-Mer. The hotel is beautifully located right on the water, and is ideally suited for travelers who are looking for a more 'local' approach to their French Riviera trip. Upon arrival at the hotel we were warmly greeted, and checked in. As an Honors Diamond member, benefits included complimentary parking (normally 9 EUR), an upgrade to a deluxe ocean view room that included a balcony, daily breakfast in the restaurant, a voucher for two welcome alcoholic drinks, and some full-size Nuxe products (featured at the spa) that were waiting for us in the room. I also especially loved the touch of the hand written letter waiting for us in the room from the General Manager, explaining the history of the hotel, which was such a lovely touch. The room was a perfect size, including our two big suitcases, and was perfectly suited for two people. Beds were super comfortable and housekeeping was always early in the morning (between 9am and 10am) and I cannot stress how amazing it is to come back from breakfast and your room is made up. The pool is on the smaller size, but a nice set up nonetheless for sunbathing and dips in between relaxing, reading a book, etc. Unfortunately the pool area does not have easy access to the beach, but does have an attendant every afternoon to order drinks, light bites from, etc. The beach is accessible from the hotel by going through the restaurant and its patio to exit the hotel - just past the walking path are stairs leading down to the beach. It was so cool to see a beach filled with locals relaxing, reading books, taking their daily walk, and the water itself is only ankle deep for several meters walking out into the water. The area itself is quaint, and there are numerous restaurants, bars, ice cream shops, etc. all within a 2-7 min walk from the hotel. We ate at Restaurant Le Cannier the first night and Annanata the second night - both 5 min walks from the hotel and absolutely delicious food. Breakfast is decent in the restaurant, but a bit chaotic. Servers are constantly running around doing many tasks, so it was normal both mornings for us to be seated at tables without place settings, to wait a while for coffee orders, and for things like plates and cups at the buffet to not be stocked quickly. Overall though, it was a great spread, and better than most hotel breakfasts (especially the fresh orange juice machine!) My only feedback is that the hotel pool towel situation is not ideal - there are two orange beach/pool towels in your room, along with a note that if they aren't returned daily you'll be charged. We were able to get more towels throughout the day from the front desk after flipping between the pool and the beach, but it just created a friction point. I imagine this is done given people take towels to the beach and perhaps don't return them, but towels should be unlimited at least by the pool and while the attendant is there. Also the wifi was exceptionally slow - it was hard to get anything really done on my phone or laptop, so take that into consideration. Overall, for this American tourist, it was a breath of fresh air to stay in such a local town, with many other hotel guests being local or from the region, and really feeling like I got to explore a hidden gem of France. Would absolutely come back and will highly recommend to anyone visiting the area!

This hotel should not be part of the Hilton Curio collection.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

This is without doubt the worst Hilton Curio franchise (this was a problem which I will explain later) that I have ever stayed at. The service is terrible throughout the hotel (except the front desk) It is generally badly maintained, old and frankly, dirty. This hotel should be neither a 4 Star or indeed be associated with the Hilton brand. The swimming pool area was old and badly looked after with stained sun beds and umbrellas. The breakfast was messy and unorganised and shamefully, serving up reconstituted scrambled egg at a Hilton Breakfast (famous for it) is disgusting. Every cup, plate, saucer and cutlery was dirty or grubby. I met with the GM who although heard my concerns informed me directly they are only a franchise of Hilton and are not operated by them . This means, it's an independent hotel with a Hilton franchise (booking engine, points) He proudly declared he is employed by the family who owns the hotel and not a Hilton employee, god forbid. He tried to "comp" me which I refused point blankly and said I am giving me feedback for other guests. He lost interest and moved on. It was so bad that I have contacted Hilton Europe senior management to express my concerns that this property has on their brand reputation. My advice is stay away until they fix their issues.

Holiday ruined by mosquitoes

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

This is a really lovely hotel but there are so many mosquitoes! Between myself and my son, we must have gotten about 70 bites in 3 days. I travel extensively and I can’t actually remember ever getting bitten this badly as most hotels control their mosquitoes by spraying. When I was at the reception, I noticed all the hotel guest were covered in bites. It ruined the rest of our holiday. No matter how lovely the hotel is, I can’t recommend on this basis.

Less than expected

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Was it a bad experience? No, for sure not. Was it an amazing experience? Not either. We had a room on the ground floor so no view at all. But we knew that in advance, so not a problem. The room was clean, but rather small. Mini-bar with water and coke were complementary, same for the coffee. Nice Espresso machine, but non-labeled cheap bad coffee 🤨 Outdoor swimming pool was small and sunbeds without any privacy. No access from the pool to the beach 🤨 Breakfast was too expensive for the offered choices. No dedicated gluten free section, no lactose free milk or yogurt 🤨 Bed was at Hilton standard, comfortable 😉 Next time I when I am in the Toulon area I will look for another hotel despite being HH member with 750K points

Need to invest in pool area

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Beautiful building in a great location, rooms are nice and comfortable. The breakfast is ok at best, not a great selection and whole thing is a bit chaotic. However the biggest issue is the pool area. Firstly as one other reviewer highlighted there is no access to the beach from the pool. You have to get dressed and walk back through the hotel and restaurant. The bigger issue is the sunbeds. They are old, cheap and very uncomfortable with many of them starting to fray and rip. Not good by far for a hotel of this standard charging the rates they charge. It would not be a big investment to replace them with new sundbeds with comfortable cushions. We are in the main restaurant once, service was poor and the food was not great.
