Great Potential, But Needs TLC

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

We just got back from Melia, and honestly, it was a mix of great moments and frustrating ones. Here’s the breakdown: The Room: For a 5-star resort, the room felt more like a 3-star. There was mold around the shower glass, rust on the floor, and the open shower design was a disaster. Every shower turned the bathroom into a mini pool because the floor wasn’t slanted enough. Privacy was also an issue since the glass panel wasn’t fully frosted. One wall had water damage, and the toilet seat kept coming off like it had a personal vendetta against us. Sleep Quality: The AC was a mystery. To avoid freezing, we had to keep it set above 29°C, which makes no sense. On top of that, there were loud banging noises at night that made it hard to sleep. Service and Amenities: The refilling service was appreciated, but it wasn’t consistent. Sometimes things were missing, and we had to ask for them. Our phone didn’t work when we arrived and only got fixed two days before we left. The internet was slow, kept disconnecting, and required constant reconnection. Bring a VPN if you need to stay connected. As is common in Cuba, we also had about an hour without water and a short 15-minute power outage. It wasn’t the end of the world, but it’s worth mentioning. Swim-Up Room: The swim-up was great in theory, but there were no clear rules about which areas were private. We often found trash and old drinks on our patio, which is supposed to be part of our room. We even had to ask people to leave so we could enjoy our space. A bigger parasol that covers the swim-up area would have been nice too. Food and Drinks: The bars were consistent, and the bartenders knew what they were doing. Drinks were strong enough without being over the top. Buffet coffee was just okay, but the lobby café was excellent. Their Irish coffee at night was a highlight. The buffet had variety, but timing matters. If you show up late, you might be left with scraps. The pasta station was always packed, and the ice cream line felt longer than a Disney ride. The à la carte restaurants were hit or miss. One night was amazing, the next was like eating at the buffet. They served what they called risotto, but it was basically vegetable rice, and the ossobuco was so tough it felt like chewing on a leather boot. The teppanyaki restaurant was fun, but the performance was underwhelming. No onion volcano, which was a letdown. Biggest Frustration: There was no guidebook, no rules, and no information provided. Kids got scolded for swimming after 6 PM, but we had no idea there were pool hours. There was no map or schedule, so we had to figure everything out ourselves or search online. For a resort this size, that’s unacceptable. Extras: The checkout area was hot and crowded with no AC, so everyone was sweating before getting on the bus. Tours were expensive. We enjoyed the catamaran ride, but some guests from other hotels were out of control with alcohol. The language barrier was real. After check-in, it was hard to find staff who spoke English or French. On the bright side, the resort has a few adorable feral cats wandering around. They’re friendly, and honestly, I wanted to bring one home. Shoutouts: Ernesto and Sheykla were amazing. Ernesto is hilarious and even speaks some Quebecois, which was a fun surprise. Sheykla always had a smile and made mornings better. The general manager was everywhere, actually managing, which was nice to see. Tips: Bring toiletries, tip generously, and pack patience. It helps, but honestly, for an all-inclusive, it shouldn’t be necessary. Would We Return? Maybe, if they fix the rooms, enforce swim-up rules, and provide a proper guide for guests. The potential is there, but right now, it’s a mixed bag.

This is our second time visiting melia trinidad peninsula, we went back because our first experience was very good. This time we found stained bed sheets and towels they need update them. Also for families traveling with babies is difficult because the hotel don't have changing tables in any of the bathrooms on common areas like bars, lobby or restaurants, we had to go back to our room to be able to change his diaper every time.
