We were here in Jan/25 and loved it so I knew I would be comfortable travelling Solo here. This time I upgraded to level. PROs Newer resort, rooms are lovely and everything you need, views are wonderful from most rooms, amazing staff, food is very good for Cuba. The hotel and pools were always clean. The level allows you to experience an ala-carte restaurant which is wonderful and has wonderful views of the ocean. Food was wonderful here. You also have your own pool, beach area, upgraded drinks and room service. Your concierges are there to help you with reservations, answer any questions and to give you an elevated experience. I did have a swim up and loved it. It was a bit slower so no problem ever finding lounges at pool or beach. Entertainment is mixed with local band, singers and the entertainment team. Your concierges ate will not find entertainment during the day as far as games etc. This is more of a laid back atmosphere. CONs I know everyone goes to Cuba for the beach and yes this beach is rocky so bring water shoes. I was in the ocean every day and it was wonderful. You can go to the left and there is a beach with no rocks if you choose. I do wish that Sunwing vacations would fly into Cienfuegos year round which is 1 1/2 hours. This time of year the flights went into Santa Clara which was 3 hours which I found a little long. Over all this is such a wonderful resort and would return again. I have travelled Cuba for over 40 years and this is on the top of my list. Thank you to all staff for making the week so enjoyable. Ivan a special thank you for such professionalism and going above and beyond. I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

I had a very pleasant stay at this hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful, the room was clean and comfortable, and the overall atmosphere was relaxing. The location was convenient and the facilities were well maintained. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would happily stay here again.

After a week-long stay at the resort at the Level Section I have mixed feelings to share. While there were positive aspects, significant issues impacted our experience; Overall, a significant decline since March 2024 1. Arrival & Check-in: The check-in process was disorganized. As "Level" guests, we expected the advertised private check-in. After being dropped by the bus at the main reception area, no one greeted or directed us. We waited approximately 15 minutes without assistance before finding our way. A clear system to notify the Level reception of arriving guests is needed. 2. Reception & Staff Engagement: The main reception area is spacious but often felt impersonal. On several occasions, staff appeared more focused on their personal phones than on guests. For example, one receptionist, when asked for pool towels, said he needed to call the concierge but then returned to his phone without resolving the request. Other staff members were helpful, but consistency is lacking. Special thanks to Lizandra. 3. The Room – Clean but Poorly Maintained: The room itself was nice and clean, thanks to the diligent housekeeping staff. However, preventive maintenance was absent. We experienced several issues: a continuously leaking toilet, improper calibrated coffee machine, a shower door that did not close properly (causing water to leak into the room), and an air conditioner that ran constantly on "Auto" mode without regulation. A bathroom scale showed a low battery for our entire stay, and basic amenities like sugar were not available. These issues, which should be caught by routine checks. I did not report these incidents until our last day, with the expectation that they would be addressed for the next guests. We’ve learned not to complain about minor issues, as we understand that Cuba is Cuba even for Melia. 4. "The Level" Area – Misleading Advertisement: The "adults-only" promise for The Level pool and beach area was not upheld. The area's layout allows all hotel guests (including families with children) to pass through it to access the beach and restaurants. As a result, the space was often occupied by non-Level guests, making it difficult to find seating. Furthermore, the pool and surrounding grounds were not cleaned during our stay. 80% of all palapa covering were removed on our third day and never replaced. 5. The Beach: The beach is rocky both along the shoreline and in the water. While the snorkeling is very good, it isn’t ideal for the average swimmer. One morning, I saw maintenance staff throwing rocks from the sand back into the water rather than removing them, which was puzzling—especially compared to last year, when workers worked very hard to clear the rocks and remove them from the water. 6. Air Quality – An External Nuisance: A significant and unavoidable issue is the proximity of the resort (less than 3 miles) to the open municipal landfill for Trinidad. Depending on wind direction, the smell of burning and decaying waste often drifts over the peninsula. This affected the overall ambiance and air quality at the beach, pool, and even occasionally in open common areas. It is an unpleasant and persistent environmental problem that the hotel cannot control but significantly impacts the guest experience. 7. Food Quality & Variety: The main buffet was below average, with no variation over seven days. The specialty restaurants were a mixed experience: the Mediterranean and Alma restaurants were acceptable, but the Japanese restaurant was disappointing. Aside from gyoza (served without sauce), the menu lacked authenticity. The sushi was overwhelmingly rice with minimal filling, and the miso soup was a vegetable soup. 8. Bars: Bars offered a decent selection of drinks. However, many premium drinks were for purchase only, which was not clearly communicated unless specifically asked. A highlight was The Level pool bar and the main bar between Mosaic and Alma restaurant particularly thanks to Eduardo and Yosbel, who crafted excellent Maracancha, Canchanchara and the best Hugo. 9. Spa: We did not use the spa, but the prices on the menu were comparable to those in Canada. A significant price reduction (30-50%) would likely make the services much more attractive to guests and a very good business unit for the resort. 10. Management & Customer Service: This was the most concerning aspect. Multiple managers, both from Meliá and locally, appeared perpetually rushed and unapproachable. A deeper issue was the widespread use of personal phones by staff across all departments—including reception, security, groundskeeping, and office personnel—often on speakerphone. This not only presented an unprofessional image but also seemed to consume the resort's limited internet bandwidth, making the Wi-Fi virtually unusable for tourists during staff working hours. As a frequent traveler to Cuba (this was my 38th visit) and a Melia- MAS member, this was the least productive resort environment I have encountered. With better oversight, clear procedures, and restricted personal phone use during work hours, this beautiful property could offer the excellent experience it promises.
