Not a luxury hotel - management seems to condone misleading advertising

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

To do this hotel justice is quite difficult. There are very good aspects, but unfortunately the bad aspects prevail by far. This hotel holds itself out as a luxury hotel and is charging rates comparable to the absolute top hotels in Vienna. However, this is not justified at all and I don’t think one can consider this hotel to be luxurious. Or to be more precise - the hotel is very nice at first glance, but once you look closer what you see is not pretty. But let’s start with the positive aspects: - Historic building, but quite modern on the inside - the room we had was well appointed (but was probably recently renovated which I understand may not be the case for all rooms) - very good breakfast buffet - nice spa - nice and professional front staff Despite these positive points, however, I have to say that this hotel is not a first rate luxury hotel. The gym has rather dated equipment. Housekeeping is not good at all. The room had coffee stains with trash sticking to it on the table. This was also not cleaned on the second day of our stay. So I cleaned it up. Turndown service took some of the towels, but didn’t replace them - which wasn’t nice to say the least. Not to mention that housekeeping never bothered to look at or even clean the two French balconies that my room had. Service in the lobby lounge is very slow. The modern shower, the telephones, and the in-Room safe were not working properly. Nothing beats standing under the shower in the morning, and the shower then having an error and not working anymore. The room description is misleading (which apparently is a recurring and acceptable theme at this hotel - on this more later). While the GHA homepage (which uses the information provided by the hotels) listed the rooms as having balconies with views, in reality these were only very narrow French balconies from where you had a view of an ugly apartment building…. But it was fascinating watching the neighbours play video games. More generally, the hotel seems to find misleading information acceptable. With this I am coming to the worst part, at least for me - the cigar lounge. The hotel is mentioning that they have a cigar lounge - you can find this on their website, AmEx mentions this as well as GHA (adding screen shot from their homepage below). I booked the hotel only because of their cigar lounge. While they indeed have a smokers lounge, you cannot order drinks there. And you are also not allowed to bring in your own drinks. I asked to talk to the manager on duty to see whether we could fine a solution to this, but there was no manager available (at 9:30 pm). The front staff was very nice and professional in handling my complaint, but couldn’t decide anything. So I ended up having to smoke the expensive cigar I had brought and drink the champagne I had bought on the French balcony in my room in the pouring rain, trying to juggle an umbrella over me. The next day, a very smug assistant to the manager explained to me that my complaint was misplaced as they had not advertised anything wrongly. He stated that a cigar lounge didn’t imply that one would be able to consume beverages there. This guy managed to annoy me even further given his way to address things - he should learn from the front staff who are much better and more diplomatic than he is. It was quite telling that the smug guy told me openly that he was having a lot of these conversations about the cigar lounge. This was confirmed the next day at check out when another manager approached me to apologise. Interestingly, she used the exact same story as the smug guy. It sounded to me like this was a scripted response that the hotel had their employees tell anyone complaining about the cigar lounge. My view on this is: - if they use the words „cigar lounge“ it implies being able to have drinks. I doubt that there is a cigar lounge anywhere else in the world where you can’t have drinks. - saying that they never advertised that you could have drinks in the cigar lounge is like saying that the above-mentioned poor views were fine because at least you had some kind of view (and they never said the „views“ would be nice). - as the hotel acknowledged that a lot of people were complaining, they do know what people expect from a cigar lounge. So they either should stop advertising that they have a cigar lounge or clarifying on the websites that drinks cannot be consumed there. Or they could just shut down the cigar lounge. The way the hotel dealt with this shows me that they are fine with misleading (potential) guests. This is unacceptable, but very telling of the hotel management. Anantara should look into this and make necessary changes if they are indeed serious about bringing Asian hospitality to Vienna. So if you’re thinking about booking this hotel because of the cigar bar (as I did) or expect great service - stay away and book a room with a large balcony either at the Ritz Carlton or the Hotel Imperial.

The lobby is a dream for the lover of architecture! The rooms are divine too! The suites welcome you with high ceilings and lots of space for you and your guests. Order the Apfelstrudel if you have an opportunity and fall in love with the beauty and dream of Wien! Wien really is the city of dreams and staying here is a big dream!

Nice hotel, poor housekeeping staff

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

Wonderful luxury hotel, upgraded to a new suite with Amex BUT, incompetent and poorly trained housekeeping staff. Did not finish cleaning the room one day, and "forgot" another day, and then they cleaned while we sat in the lobby, but removed the bathrobes. So-so gym, broken showers, and again nice but poorly trained staff. Great breakfast buffet.

Awesome choice for a conference.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

I stayed for 2 nights in this hotel for a conference that took place in the hotel itself. Great luxurious property with very nice rooms and facilities. They gave me a twin room, which was ok as this was a conference rate, and I didn't expect much flexibility. The room was spacious, with a marble bathroom and a very comfy bed. Breakfast was very good, with many quality choices, awesome surroundings, and great staff. Would stay again and recommend this property.
