Oenophiles, rejoice: at Hotel Viura, every aspect of daily life revolves around the almighty grape. Located in the heart of the La Rioja wine region, there are dozens of vineyards within walking or biking distance. Hotel Viura excels at making the experience memorable: Book one of four cycling routes through the countryside, or take it a step further and greet the day with a hot air balloon or paragliding flight. Guests can also boost their wine knowledge with a personalized lesson in the property’s extensive cellar or opt to unwind with an anti-aging spa treatment using an elixir made from – you guessed it – local grapes.

As a frequent international traveler who has spent years exploring some of the world’s most hospitality-focused destinations, our stay at Hotel Viura was quite simply one of the absolute worst hotel experiences I have encountered anywhere. From the moment we arrived, the tone was set: no greeting, no welcome, and no acknowledgment that guests had even entered the property. Throughout our entire stay, not a single staff member engaged with us in any meaningful way. It didn’t feel like indifference, it felt as though our presence was an inconvenience to them entirely. The advertised spa turned out to be located in what felt like a dark closet tucked into a back room of a back room, more of an afterthought than a highlight of the property. It was mostly closed up and clearly unused, likely due to its obvious lack of appeal. The tub wasn’t even filled with water, items were lying on the floor, and the entire space had a strangely neglected, almost dystopian feel. Even more frustrating, there was zero Wi-Fi during our stay. It was useless. As travelers who needed connectivity to work remotely and plan daily activities in the region, this meant losing two full days of productivity and being unable to organize even basic plans in the area. For a hotel positioning itself as a destination property for international travelers, this failure is inexcusable. The rooms themselves were cold, stark, and underwhelming, with poor lighting and no sense of comfort or atmosphere. Despite being located in one of Spain’s most beautiful wine regions, the hotel has no views It sits in a lowest point of the town, essentially in a bowl, surrounded by nearby buildings, completely disconnected from the landscape that draws visitors to this area in the first place. The experience felt oddly claustrophobic rather than immersive. What ultimately stood out most, however, was the complete absence of hospitality. Staff consistently ignored our presence, creating an environment that felt unwelcoming and at times borderline hostile. At checkout, we were silently handed a receipt, no inquiry about our stay, no thank you, no farewell, not even basic courtesy. It was genuinely astonishing and completely at odds with even the most minimal expectations of hospitality. This was made even more striking because every other hotel we stayed in throughout the Basque region demonstrated warmth, professionalism, and pride in welcoming guests. Hotel Viura stood apart, unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons. With so many beautiful and welcoming options in the area, it’s hard to understand why anyone would waste their time at a place like this.

I visited this hotel some years ago and was bowled over by how great it was; this time I was bowled over by how its standards had slipped. The reception was unmanned on arrival so we had to wander around to find staff. There is no longer a lunch service in the hotel but given how soulless and frosty the dinner was there, it was no great loss. We had a room with a terrace but that was pointless as it was just a few paving stones and then a large wall which mean we had little natural light. On the positive side we discovered Sotera Taverna, a wonderful tavern in the town serving a set menu with wonderful food and wine for 30 euros, not fancy but a much better meal and atmosphere than the hotel (but if you prefer image over content then it's not for you), and also the wine bar at Luis Canas winery.

This hotel offers an incredibly unique experience. From the outset the standards were set high. The friendly welcome, the beautiful interior, a free glass of wine as a welcome drink and then our incredible room with a terrace (we received a free upgrade). We had dinner in the hotel restaurant and the food was out of this world. Portion sizes good and the quality of the ingredients fantastic. The attention by the waiting staff was outstanding. Selection of wines brilliant and all sensibly priced. Had the best nights sleep in our huge comfy bed. Breakfast included and again was of an excellent standard. There is nothing to do in the little village but if you jump in your car there is plenty to see in the local vicinity included ding some breathtaking views. Definitely worth a detour.

The Viura Hotel is a hotel that I suspect guests will either love or hate. The "classic" photo of the exterior with its higgltey pigglety aspect sums the hotel up. The exterior to me is dramatic, but some of the interior does not come off - particularly the dark corridors designed to give a "warehouse" feel. This feel is carried to the bedrooms with raw concrete and distressed furniture - I personally like the bedrooms We had dinner in the restaurant which we enjoyed. Little of the hotel was explained to us on arrival, and we had to find for ourselves by wandering round. But we were offered a glass of local wine at arrival, which was a nice touch There was a mix ok good staff and bad staff, and no management presence. And it is really a firm management input that the hotel really needs

This is the second time we have stayed in this hotel. It is truly excellent. The staff are very helpful and arranged tours of wine producers in Villabuena. The tours were excellent, very, very informative. The room was clean and quiet. One improvement would be a night light so occupants could find their way to the bathroom easily at night. The restaurant was absolutely splendid. Our dinners were outstanding. I had a super hamburger. The chicken dish is very creative and excellent. The breakfast buffet had something for everyone to say the least. The hotel is not far from major wine producers in Rioja as well as in close proximity to those in Villabuena. We hope to stay again.
